Fr. Rich JakubikBe Shepherds With The Smell Of Sheep
Several years ago, Pope Francis called on all priests to bring the healing power of God’s grace to everyone in need, to stay close to the marginal-ized and to be “shepherds living with the smell of the sheep.”
Pope Francis said that the power of grace “comes alive and flourishes to the extent that we, in faith, go out and give ourselves and the Gospel to oth-ers, giving what little ointment we have to those who have nothing, nothing at all.” In Evangelii Gaudium, Pope Francis issued the same call to all Christians, called as we are to be missionary disciples. Evangelizers thus take on the ‘smell of the sheep’ and the sheep are willing to hear their voice.
On the Fourth Sunday of Easter, the Church’s liturgy presents to us the figure of Jesus as the “Good Shepherd.” The Gospel reading is taken from the tenth chapter of John’s Gospel. This Sunday the passage is John 10: 11-18. I wish to reflect in this column on this Gospel passage in which Jesus identifies Himself as the “Good Shep-herd who lays down His life for the sheep.” Every Catholic is called to be “a Good Shepherd” in the environment where he or she lives: in the family, at work, school, and in the community.
Several years ago, a man shared with me how he was personally and spiritually moved by an eighty-five-year old homeless woman living on the streets of Chicago. Week after week, he would see her on his way to work hanging around the Daley Plaza. Security would no longer let her come inside the building because of her incontinence. After speaking with security, the man learned that she was receiving a social security check and some general services through the Chicago agency Thresholds. Thresholds is a nonprofit agency that serves people who are homeless and seriously mentally ill. They strive to help people who are often hard to help. She consistently refused hous-ing services and would rather sleep on the streets. The man said he would buy her hand-warmers, jackets, boots, gloves, scarfs, hats, and blankets in the hope of helping her survive the cold winters.
She often gave them away to others who were homeless. To me, this generous man, the work-ers at Thresholds, and this homeless woman are all examples of what being a “Good Shepherd” is all about in our world today. We are called to get involved in the lives of one another and show love, concern, and generosity.
The image of the Good Shepherd presented in today’s gospel is an encounter with a God who offers us fierce love, a deep intimacy, and an abid-ing presence throughout our life. The Good Shep-herd is a centering image for all of us to use in our prayer life. It is the image we can pray with when we need stillness, comfort, and a gentle reassur-ance. It is also the image we can pray with when we feel lost or confused, or when we are in need of healing of some kind. And it is most certainly the image we can pray with when we feel anxious, scared, or experience self-loathing.
As with all images of prayer, the image of the Good Shepherd needs to expand and challenge us to not become static, stagnant, and self-serving in our relationship with God and one another. The Good Shepherd does not just stay in the pasture where he is safe and protected. A life with this Good Shepherd image of Jesus compels us to do more than resting in green pastures. It calls us to move out into the world and to become Good Shepherds ourselves.
The biblical narratives provided this weekend give us an account of what shepherds and disciples do: tend, look after, rescue, lead, pastor, seek the lost, provide nourishing food, water, and rest, bind up the injured, and heal the sick. Who are the Good Shepherds in our own life? Where do we experience in one another wisdom, dreams, heal-ing, fierce warriors and protectors, and prophets? Let us strive to live as Good Shepherds by living simply, humbly, and fearlessly in our commitment to the needs of one another. This is the heart of what it means to be true disciples of the Good Shepherd.
(Fr. Rich Jakubik, Holy Family’s Associate Pastor, is writing this column while Fr. Terry is away.)

Sixth Sunday of Easter1. Saul’s conversion was a dramatic transformation. Converts are frequently the most fervent in their faith. Has a convert ever helped you strengthen your faith?
2. Paul’s writings are a staple in our liturgical worship. How have his words im-pacted you?
3. The second reading teaches us: “let us love, not in word or speech, but in truth and action.” As Christians, what is our call to ac-tion?
4. We hear in our Gospel that a branch must be pruned to bear more fruit. In keep-ing with this thought, consider the following: • What needs to be pruned in you? • What needs to be pruned in the Church? • What needs to be pruned at Holy Family?

Attention all Landscape Specialists and GardenersThe flowers, trees and shrubs surrounding the building have been maintained by volunteers since the build-ing opened. This does not include the Courtyard. We use a service to mow the grass. However, one of our volunteers recently decided to retire after many years of service, which leaves us with a team of one. We are hoping to find a group of individuals who would be wiling to maintain beds (pulling weeds), planting, dead heading flowers and minimum pruning of shrubs. The work is typically done once a week so as not to be-come overwhelming and takes about 3-4 hours. As previ-ously mentioned we do have a volunteer who has been a part of the ministry and is committed to continue. This is a great opportunity to spend time with friends while outdoors and supporting Holy Family. Please consider this ministry and feel free to contact Maureen DeRosa at 847-907-3489 with any questions.

An experience that changed my life for the better was when I went on the Holy Family Mission Trip during the summer of 2017. I had no idea that what I was about to experience would be life changing. When I was preparing for it, I came in with a mindset of wanting to work and serve others. Not only was this what I had come to expect, but I was given a whole new perspective on my faith and what it means to be a true Catholic.
This trip didn't just help me achieve the goal of helping others, but also left an impact on me. On the first day, I was introduced to my work group and started setting up my sleeping quarters. I was eager and excited to kickoff the day. My work group consisted of three kids from Tennessee, a girl and her mom from Iowa, and a priest from New Jersey. Although our group was kind of quiet the first day, we still worked very well together. They were all very nice people. Some of the things that we did throughout the week were painting homes, helping out at FMSC (Feed My Starving Children), and providing lawn care for a lot of the older folks that were in need. It made me feel great to help them.
During the mission trip I met a guitarist/singer named Mathias Michael. He was a great guy and I started to look up to him since I am a guitarist myself. However, I didn't look up to him as just a musician, but as a role model because of his faith. We started talking about the different types of music we liked. He liked your typical rock but also had been highly influenced by Christian music. I thought the style of Christian music coming from his guitar was excellent and some of the songs he played were very similar to the ones we play during church. I learned that he was on tour and he even wrote a book to help guide others through faith. It soon made me realize that
Mathias had a calling from God which was to play his music to spread Jesus’ teachings through song. He had incorporated his faith into his daily life and I really took note of that. I felt like I wanted to do the same through the service I was doing with my work group. As the days went by, we as a workforce started to grow in our faith through the service we had provided and how it related to the Bible. I got to know everyone a lot better and on one particular night, I got to experience something I had never heard of called Eucharistic Adoration. This was a new kind of prayer for me, and it made me feel much different than any other kind of prayer I had tried. I felt closer to God. It made me realize that the people who were working at the camp, like Mathias, had incorporated their faith into their daily lives.
Even though we all sin because it is part of our human nature, I learned that it is important to do the same as these people are doing which was to serve the community. Another thing we got to experience was something called Four Corners. The way it works is that you're in an area with four corners and each corner serves a different purpose in helping us recognize the gift of God’s love and forgiveness in our lives. One corner had the sacrament of reconciliation. Another corner had a session with one of the ministers of our faith to discuss questions or doubts we have. The third corner is another session where we talk about what God wants from us, and the last one is where we spend time in personal prayer.

The last day of the mission trip we went to Six Flags Great America to celebrate our week of work and that was a lot of fun. However, the hardest part was saying goodbye to everyone. Overall I am very grateful to have gone on this mission trip because not only did it make me feel like a better person in the sense of doing good things for other people, but it also drew me closer to God and changed my perspective on what it means to be Catholic. This reflection was written by Tom Nora a Sophomore at Fremd High School. Tom has already sign-up to go on this year’s Summer Mission Trip to the Twin Cities.
We still need additional adult volunteers for this Summer’s Mission Trip – July 22-27, 2018

Catholic Social Teaching – United States Catholic Conference of BishopsThe Church’s social teaching is a rich treasure of wisdom about building a just society and living lives of holiness amidst the challenges of modern society. Modern Catholic social teaching has been articulated through a tradition of papal, con-ciliar and episcopal documents. The depth and richness of this tradition can be understood best through a direct reading of these documents. In these brief reflections, we highlight several of the key themes that are at the heart of our Catholic social tradition.Care for God’s CreationWe show our respect for the Creator by our stewardship of creation. Care for the earth is not just an Earth Day slogan, it is a requirement of our faith. We are called to protect people and the planet, living our faith in relationship with all of God’s creation. This environmental challenge has fundamental moral and ethical dimen-sions that cannot be ignored.
Man, who discovers his capacity to transform and in a certain sense create the world through his own work, forgets that this is always based on God’s prior and original gift of the things that are. Man thinks that he can make arbitrary use of the earth, subjecting it without restraint to his will, as though it did not have its own requisites and a prior God-given purpose, which man can indeed develop but must not betray. Instead of carrying out his role as a co-operator with God in the work of creation, man sets himself up in place of God and thus ends up provoking a rebellion on the part of nature, which is more tyrannized than governed by him. Catholic Charities MOTHER’S DAY APPEAL
MAY 13, 2018Janice and her husband were both fighting cancer when they came to one of Catholic Charities food pantries. Since they could not work, they needed help feeding their daughter and keeping their bodies strong through proper nutrition. Catholic Charities gave them the fresh food and produce, and con-nected them to the appropriate services that they needed at a very difficult time in their life.
Please give to Catholic Charities on Mother’s Day to help families overcome enormous obstacles. Learn more at www.catholiccharities.net. “True power is service. We must serve all people especially the poor, the weak and the vulnerable.” - Pope Francis

There will be volunteers there to take your dona-tions and put them directly on the truck. Tax receipts will be available. PLEASE DO NOT BRING ANY DONATIONS TO THE CHURCH PRIOR TO SATURDAY, May 5. Chicago March For Our Lives on March 24, 2018Holy Family SCC Attends March
“Holy Family was well represented at the Chicago March For Our Lives on March 24, 2018. The march and rally unified thirty thousand anti-violence and gun control advocates in line with the Cardinal’s Anti-Violence (Initiative) in the Chicago area. The kids that spoke at the rally were most moving as they spoke from the heart living with gun violence every day. The feeling we had as the kids spoke…a March turning into a Movement.” Bill Crowley “A few (thousand) of us went to today's march. It was quite emo-tional. The presentations were all done by the kids - from eloquent speakers to poets to dancers to rappers to a child who broke down in tears sharing her story. I was happy to see a diverse group - toddlers to teens, young parents to grandparents, different colors, Christian Jewish & Muslim. I was especially moved to see that other people had signs with the same message that this is a Pro-Life, Respect-Life is-sue. Our faith calls us to act.” Karla Guilfoil
