Monster of the Month
Kajal helps out at the Super-heroes 5K Packet Pick-Up by distributing t-shirts to runners
June’s Monster of the Month is incoming sophomore, Kajal Maran! With a passion for service, Kajal has attended many events in her one year of Key Club, including Beautify Our Parks and the Stone Lake Elementary Ice Cream Social. Her favorite event so far is the Spring Eggstravaganza where she helped children celebrate Easter. She enjoys being a part of Key Club and says, “I want to give back to the community and it makes me feel like I'm doing some-thing worthwhile." When she’s not volun-teering, Kajal enjoys playing tennis and is part of Franklin High School’s team. Thank you for your dedication and hard work Kajal!
Hey there Monsters! Another month has passed and we’re finally settling into summer mode! If you haven’t noticed already, the newsletter has gone through some pretty drastic changes. I may have gone a little crazy with everything but I hope you do enjoy this newsletter. Speaking of newsletters, the Division Newsletter Editor has finally been announced at the May DCM and our very own Nick Stringfellow has gotten the position! Be sure to congratu-late him and I know we all look forward to seeing what he has in store for us this year. I hope you all are having a fabulous summer and make sure to take advantage of all the service opportunities coming up!

Color Me Rad 5K
Starting off as clean as newborn babies and with t-shirts as white as snow, runners be-gan the race without a clue to what would lie ahead. Volunteers at the Color me Rad 5K Race worked as part of the “Color Bomb Squad,” throwing a multitude of colors at runners passing by. Volunteers brought forth a tsunami of color, coating children, teens, and adults alike in colored cornstarch and liquid dye. Spencer Kwong who vol-unteered at the event said, “It was a super fun experience and I ended up getting all pink from the color-throwing!” Key Clubbers ended the day with not only coating the runners from head to toe with color but also themselves.

In the wee hours of the morning, Key Clubbers started the recycling sorting party early in order to avoid the boiling, afternoon sun. With over seventy bags collected from Franklin High before the school year ended, Key Clubbers had their work cut out for them. For a little over four hours, Franklin Key Clubbers sorted out and crushed bottles. Mem-bers moved around to find ways to es-cape the summer heat by leaving for shadier areas or spraying themselves with the backyard garden hose. Brian Fong attended his very last recycling sorting party and said, “Being in the heat out there was tor-ture, but it was definitely fun! The best part was spraying water at each other with the hose when it got too hot. Never had my clothes dry so quickly, other than in the dryer.” Luckily, with teamwork, the members were able to finish sorting the recycla-bles and sent them to the recycling center to raise money for our club.

No Excuses 5K
On a cold morning, volunteers helped out with snacks and also participated in clean up at the No Excuses 5K. Michael Ma described his experience at this event and said, “Though we had to get up early on a holiday morn-ing into the bipolar coldness of Sacramento, it was totally worth prepping refreshments for all the runners and get-ting to practice my slicing and dicing skills on bananas. Seeing each smile of gratitude reminded me of the posi-tive impact that we make on people's lives in the simplest ways.”

Live United Toilet Paper Drive
Stone Lake Elementary Ice Cream Social
Outside of Cal Expo, members decked out in blue t-shirts waved signs to passing drivers to advertise the Live United Toilet Paper Drive. Live United had a goal of 190,000 toilet paper rolls, but with help of volunteers, do-nors, and supporters, it was able to collect a staggering number of 229,485 rolls. Dana Little described the experi-ence as being “fun while holding signs in the hot sun.”
Excited elementary school students returned to school on a Friday evening to attend the Stone Lake Elementary Ice Cream Social. Franklin Key Club volunteers were stationed by the carnival games and the bake walk to supervise the children and the games. Mem-bers also watched the raffle baskets. At the end of the social, Key Clubbers helped clean up by dismantling tents, putting away tables, and taking down the decorations. Kevin Lee participated in the event and said, “Operating the carnival games at the Stone Lake Ele-mentary School was hard and tiring work. My job was to manage the ring toss, which is much harder than it looks. It was great seeing the smiles light up on the children’s faces when they made a shot!”

Race Day
Packet Pick-Up
On Father’s Day, Key Clubbers from Di-vision 7 South gathered at Capital Mall for one of the biggest races of the month. Runners were decked out in superhero wear, ranging from Batman costumes to homemade costumes. Some members helped out with registration by passing out bibs to people who didn’t pick them up during packet pick-up or assisting those in late registration. Others set up the VIP Area and served pancakes to run-ners after the race. After most of the peo-ple left, volunteers cleaned up by taking down boxes, gates, and tents and also cleaned up the trash on the floor.
Rows of blue and white bibs were lined up alphabetically in boxes, waiting for runners who planned to participate in the Superheroes 5K to pick them up. Volunteers at the packet pick-up handed out bibs and taught runners how to tie the timer tag onto their shoe for the race. Members also distributed t-shirts and helped with late registra-tion. Sharon Hsu attended the event and described it saying, “Volunteering at this was very tiring because I had to work for 11 hours straight standing up. However, it was worth it after meeting so many people and it felt great knowing that I could help out since there weren’t that many volunteers. It was also really fun to see some of the people I met at the packet pick-up at the race the next day with their costumes.”

Franklin Key Club will be hosting our annual Ice Cream Social on June 22nd from 1:00pm to 5:00pm. It will be located at Henry Backer Sr. Park! With $5, you can eat an unlimited amount of ice cream. Bring ex-tra money for officer—pieing, water-balloon fights, and ice cream floats. Proceeds will go to Franklin Key Club and Project Eliminate!

Franklin Key Club will be buddy clubbing with Luther Burbank Key Club at the Summer Concert on June 23 from 3pm to 9pm! We will be setting up, cleaning up after the concert, and running booths. Don’t for-get to bring a signed permission slip (which can be found on the forums) and that you have to be at least 16 years old to attend.
Division 7 South’s June Division Council Meeting will be held right before Franklin’s Ice Cream Social at Henry Backer Sr. Park from 12:00 to 1:00pm. At the DCM, we will be discussing clubs, division, and dis-trict updates, as well as announcing the Monster of the Month and other upcoming events.
