MISSION STATEMENT: St. Michael Catholic Community strives to be a welcoming parish where people come together to worship, learn and grow in faith. Through our actions, we demonstrate our beliefs in fellowship, service and generous tithing of time, talent and treasure while empowering people to take a more active role in the mission of the church. We care for one another and receive comfort and support in our own times of need. All are encouraged to participate in the journey to live by Christ’s example and build the kingdom of God by sharing His word with those we meet.

Recently, one of our parish nurses handed me an ar!cle to read about ways to assess an older adult who may need caregiving assistance. For my purposes, I found the delinea!on of categories of concern a helpful guide for people. The goal is independence for as long as the person is able to manage well. The ques!on is, however, what does it mean to manage well? What are the things one looks for to see if someone is living well independently?

Mobility is an issue. One in four older adults will fall. It is important that our living spaces are freed from obstacles that create hazards: stairs without rails, throw rugs (a big issue), stepladders, and stools. We need to rethink things we once did in light of our safety. If our overall goal is independence, maintaining it, then it is important that we do our part to maintain that independence by being prudent.

A lack of mobility is also an important concern because it affects us physically and psychologically. We are built to move. Short walks are good for the mind and the body. My mom had life-long hip problems and walking wasn’t easy for her especially as she aged. While si#ng, she was always moving and stretching her feet and arms just to keep herself limber. I respected that. She couldn’t do much, but she always did something each day to help herself out. I bought her a sign that read: “Today I went from the bed to the couch. There is no stopping me now.” We laughed about it o$en.

Mental health is important. One of the things I no!ce most about older adults is they have a lot of !me on their hands. That gives them freedom to do what they

want and when they want to do it, but too much !me on your hands can also lead to problems like over-thinking things, rumina!ng over the past, present, or future problems, and over-focusing on sins that were commi9ed decades ago but now trouble our consciences. When we spend too much !me alone, we can lose perspec!ve. Short calls and short visits—20 minutes—can be helpful to maintain our sense of balance. Having li9le cri9ers like an older cat or dog can also be wonderful companions. Animal shelters have lots of dogs and cats looking for someone to love them.

Depression is a big concern and surprisingly common among the elderly. As we age, we cope with a lot of loss. A spouse dies. We lose our ability to drive. We can’t do the things we once did. We’re treated like children instead of mature adults. Depression feels like sadness or emp!ness, a restlessness, a loss of interest in once pleasurable ac!vi!es, sleep problems (too much or too li9le), ea!ng problems (too much or too li9le), and thoughts of suicide. These feelings can range from mild to severe and can last for a few moments to months or years. If depression becomes unmanageable, then outside help should be sought out. Depression is highly treatable and there is no shame in it. In our more ac!ve former lives we may have been too ac!ve to sit with our feelings or maybe our depressed feelings are related to the aging process itself, grieving over the loss of the person we once were. I have a lot of respect for folks who see a problem and seek resolu!on through counseling. It is a gi$ you give yourself.

Memory loss is also a significant problem among older adults. This is a big issue and memory loss is a common problem for our aging popula!on. It is important that we get evaluated by medical professionals if we suspect a problem. That being said, I want to restate that memory issues need to be evaluated by medical professionals, not by our family or not by self-diagnosis. Not every memory slip is Alzheimer’s Disease. Our brains are always changing throughout our life!me, crea!ng new neural pathways, and abandoning others. This isn’t always a sign of diminishment. When I first arrived at St. Michael, I remember not being able to find St. Joseph Hospital (now Henry Ford). I used to go there o$en when I was first ordained and assigned at St. Lawrence in U!ca. Since that !me a lot of the landmarks have changed. I lost the mnemonic devices that told me where to turn. Foolishly, I was driving past it without knowing it. My recollec!on didn’t change, the landscape did. O$en, we can lose our sense of confidence in what we remember or don’t remember. Memory loss can also happen when we are overwhelmed, distracted, or depressed. Try to think things through before you judge yourself harshly. Even with age related diminishment of our memory, we can s!ll func!on independently with some assistance with complex func!ons, e.g., medica!on schedules (the !ming of when medica!on is taken impacts its effec!veness), financial management (AARP recently showcased the scammers in their recent bulle!n), driving (the other day I got lost because of a detour that had a detour that had major construc!on), telephones (I admit, I have trouble figuring out how to answer a dang phone, but it has nothing to do with my memory, but the complexity of the device). Difficulty with my managing some instrumental ac!vi!es is a far cry from not remembering my spouse or not remembering that I le$ the water in the bathtub running which indicates greater diminishment. As I did with my mom, we talked about trade-offs. In order for her to remain independent, she had to let go of some instrumental ac!vi!es to maintain her independence.

I suppose there are more things that can be said about these issues. I hope I did jus!ce to the ar!cle I was given which allows us to think some more about how to care for ourselves or those we love. My final comment is something I understood for a long !me. It takes a lot of courage, tenacity, for!tude, hope, crea!vity, faith, and perseverance to live in a world that is changing everyday and where things no longer look familiar. Pope Francis recently proclaimed a world elderly day. We have birthdays, but do we really celebrate old age? With our Holy Father’s lead, I think it is high !me we should!

I watched the opening ceremony for the Olympics with great interest. I saw a lot of countries I didn’t even know existed (and I pride myself on my knowledge of geography). What really struck me was the diversity and breadth of all the athletes and, I have to admit, some of the flags were downright interesting to look at. It’s a shame that only about 950 people were admitted to actually see the ceremony in person. I was a little bothered by all the cell phones I saw. It was kind of distracting to me but then again, I’ve never been in the Olympics (and never will be) so in retrospect, I’d probably be doing the same thing. I’m sure that Samsung or Apple will somehow turn that into a commercial for their products at some point. Speaking of commercials, I’m sure this is a real money maker for NBC as I have never seen so many commercials. Seems like every 10 minutes there was some kind of commercial being aired. I look forward to watching the competitions over the next two weeks and wonder if the politicians of the world can take note of the camaraderie and genuine sharing and getting along of all the athletes. Naw, that won’t happen. They’ll be too busy boasting about how many medals their country has won, something they really had nothing to do with nor did they have anything to do with the athletes’ successes. I hope you all enjoy the competitions. We’ll soon be enjoying outdoor Masses now that the cement pad has been poured on the lawn. We only have to wait just a while longer for the grass seed to take hold. I’m hoping we can celebrate the Solemnity of the Assumption of Mary on August 15th at the 11:30 Mass outdoors (the Solemnity falls on a Sunday this year). We’ll keep you posted on that. Looks like all the cement work came out great, credit to Tom O’Grady who does more than anyone to keep our church and grounds looking so nice. We are lucky to have him. We had an announcement last week and also this week that we are looking the Funeral Wake Ministers. It’s an important ministry that has been affected by the pandemic. Pre-pandemic we had 6 ministers and that was just about the right size….now post-pandemic we only have 2 that are returning. We need at least 4 or 5 more. When a funeral is scheduled at St. Michael, we offer to send a Wake Minister to the funeral home the night

before the Mass to lead the family and friends of the deceased in either a prayer service or a Rosary. The commitment is about 30-45 minutes at the most and we train you to do either one, a prayer service (we have leaflets to take with you) or a Rosary. This is such an important ministry to offer people so if you are so moved to volunteer, please contact me via phone at 586-247-0020 x 4494 or email at [email protected]. Speaking of ministries, I have been remiss in reactivating the Greeter Ministry. It’s just been so crazy opening up the church post-pandemic (I hope and pray it’s really post-pandemic) that some things have fallen between the cracks. If you saw my desk, you’d understand what I mean. So with my tail between my legs, I am asking that anyone that wanted to be part of this ministry and has sent me an email or called to please, please do so again. Let me also know what Mass you are interested in. You can call or email me at the previously indicated phone or email. The commitment would be to get to church about 20 minutes before the Mass and greet folks as they come in, offer them a song sheet and answer questions they may have. Again, my sincere apologies for dropping the ball on this…it’s so hard to be human! We have received two quotes for our livestreaming plans and a third may be coming. Our plan includes direct link into the sound system, a central control center, and at least 3 cameras overhead and one remote camera. No more tripods, cords, laptops, or microphones in the church on the main floor. We have about 8 people currently volunteering with the livestreaming but can always use more. Contact me if you are interested. Our plan is to have the new system up and running by Advent of this year. Ok….NUFF said! May God Bless You all!

God Bless, Deacon Franz

FROM THE ST. MICHAEL EDUCATION COMMISSION

We all have a desire to pray. Even the apostles asked for Jesus’ help to pray. Everyone has their own style of prayer and there are many forms of traditional Catholic prayer. In prayer we encounter God; He is always there waiting. Are you looking to grow in your relationship with God? Are you looking for a different way to pray? Are you looking for a new way to understand scripture? Have you thought about praying with scripture? Discover how to hear God’s voice in scripture, in your heart and in ordinary moments. Pray and study scripture all in one process! This adult formation program sponsored by the St. Michael Education Commission will begin in the fall.

THURSDAY EVENINGS 7PM-8:30PM SEPTEMBER 23 AND 30, OCTOBER 7, 14, 21 AND 28, AND NOVEMBER 4 AND 11

An eight week DVD presentation will lead one to become aware of traditional prayer forms found in the Catholic Church that leads one to encounter scripture in a different way, becoming aware of how God is speaking through scripture which allows for new ways of relating to God. Using specific passages of scripture provided in a journal/workbook, scripture becomes the vehicle to express yourself in prayer. The journaling activity gives the opportunity to practice the process taught in the DVD. Following the DVD session, there will be a small group discussion. Registration for the program begins August 29. A registration sign-up sheet can be found in the Parish Office. You may also phone the Parish Office to get your name on the list. Registration is important so that the right number of journal/workbooks can be ordered. You are invited to grow in a relationship with God through the gift of prayer.

Stewardship Thought Today, in St. John’s Gospel, Jesus !es His instruc!ons on the Eucharist to the Book of Exodus. Christ proclaims to the crowd that their ancestors received manna in the desert from God the Father, not Moses. Jesus professes in the Gospel that He is the “Bread of Life.” Those who accept His invita!on and come to Him will never hunger or thirst, as they will be spiritually filled. In his Le9er to the Ephesians, St. Paul instructs us that, through Christ, we will gain a fresh, spiritual way of thinking. As faithful stewards, we acknowledge Jesus’ true presence in the Eucharist as translated from the Greek meaning “thanksgiving.” We believe the Eucharist to be the true Body and Blood, Soul and Divinity, of Christ. We stand in awe and gra!tude for this tremendous gi$, which opens our hearts to holiness. Plan to a9end a Eucharis!c Adora!on and Benedic!on service at your parish to experience Christ’s peace and joy.
