What ever format you are reading, digitally, audio, or traditional text; words, ideas, or thoughts catch your attention. Sometimes you are reading to fulfill an assignment and are required to document information or thoughts. Other times you are simply curious about a topic. No matter the reason capturing that word, idea, or thought has a name – Note Taking.

Notes can be random thoughts jotted on a scrap of paper, text message, or organized in a notebook or electronic tool. There are many apps, strategies, and formats for capturing those words, images, graphics, and links that can comprise notes.

We will look at a few of those known to Timberview Library Learning Commons

What do you read with? Do you use Quest to locate books available via

the web both print and digital?

To copy or not copy?

That is the dilemma. Since First Grade students are trained to “fill in the blank” or copy information or facts directly from one source on to worksheet. These worksheets can be either traditional paper or digital.

But wait, you’re in high school. So you can locate information or facts. Now copying has another name – plagiarization. Plagiarizing can lead to flunking grades, calls home to parents, or being expelled (yes it does happen at college).

Instead of copying learn to make labeled lists or summarize. Labeled lists work well for discrete pieces of information, for example dates, demographics, or locations,

Summarizing is putting the information you located into your own words. You are often asked to do this in class to show comprehension. Summarizing is a skill that transfers from school to the work world.

There’s an App for that…

There are many apps on for your smart phone or tablet. With the deployment of iPads to high schools in MISD this is one note taking app that you can find in the Power UP! App Catalog.

Evernote is an easy-to-use, free app that helps you remember everything across all of the devices you use. Stay organized, save your ideas and improve productivity. Evernote lets you take notes, capture photos, create to-do lists, record voice reminders--and makes these notes completely searchable, whether you are at home, at work, or on the go.

Citelighter is an academic Web 2.0 tool

One of my favorite note taking tools is Citelighter. Sadly it does not work at this time with iPad’s but they are working on it.

Many of THS students are encouraged to use AVID strategies. Citelighter allows a user to “capture” information from the web and add comments into a project. This, to me, reflects AVID note taking strategies.

Once all words, thoughts, and ideas have been captured by the students then the information can be organized into the order it is needed for the final product.

BUT, sometimes more information is needed. Just having notes will not get you through your final product (paper, presentation, etc).

So, here is a great resource for how to do research and write a paper.

GRIT or Persistence is an inner core of strength. It is that, “I can do it feeling”. Today’s youth are called Digital Natives. However, they are not Information Natives. Huh? Locating information can be done in a few clicks. Identifying important information or the authority (how accurate and reliable), of information is much harder. That’s where grit or persistence comes in.

Again huh… Well things you know are easy. You know how to “click” and locate “answers”. But, understanding information tends to be hard. They meant what? You mean Answers.com or Wikipedia might not be good sources of information? Well, they may or may not be correct. However, they are definitely not authoritative.

So what are you to do? ASK for help or at least ask for direction. That is what the Library Learning Commons is for. At THS the LLC has both traditional print and digital books. There are database and custom resources I (Mrs. Rike AKA library lady), have created for classes.

So

GRIT it’s what it takes!

At least those are my thoughts.
