As part of this pressure sensitive labels have come under increased scrutiny. The label industry has initiated many programs in response including matrix and liner recycling, linerless labels, and liner downgaug-ing. Pressure- sensitive adhesives remain a cause of concern as they represent a barrier to efficient container recycling if they are not easily removable. This presentation with review some of the current programs underway within the label industry and present information on what is required from adhesives to ensure they do not interfere in the recycling process.

This presentation will provide an understanding of the physical and chemical attributes, a review of applications and fundamentals for use of fumed silica dispersions.

9:45 – 10:15 a.m.Mimicking Glues from Shellfish to Develop Underwater, Renewable, and Pressure Sensitive AdhesivesJonathan Wilker, Professor, Purdue UniversityLooking into the seas we see organisms such as mussels, bar-nacles, and oysters creating intriguing adhesives that may help us to develop materials with properties not accessed previously. Our research group is working to characterize these biological systems and then taking biomimetic approaches to new ma-terials development. In doing so we have created adhesives with dry strengths exceeding several established products (e.g., ethylcyanoacrylates) and with wet adhesion being, perhaps, the strongest discovered to date. Further advances include adhe-sives made from renewable resources as well as flexible glues that can enhance bond strengths while exhibiting pressure sensi-tive properties.

These materials are commonly exposed to a variety of environmental conditions such as heat, UV light, and moisture that challenge a formulation’s durability. Furthermore, with the right nutrients and moisture conditions, microorganisms challenge the antimicrobial efficacy of long term product applications. By properly selecting the appropriate antimicrobial and utilizing product testing to evaluate perfor-mance and durability, formulations can be created that improve the quality of an application being used and can outperform other long term products on the market.

This has been a classic formulation challenge for ages in several applications and it remains as an area of active interest among researchers. Sig-nificant new developments with several innovative solutions have been accomplished over the years. A critical review of different technologies and patents will be presented.

First, it promises to deliver all the advantages of 1K epoxy adhesives: ef-ficient assembly operations, high strength and toughness. Second, it provides assembly operations lacking the capital and infrastruc-ture to invest in high bake systems with an ability to leverage the key advantages of technology commonly used in automotive and

11:15 – 11:45 a.m. Non-Migratory Surfactants in Emulsion Polymers for High Performance AdhesivesSteven Chan, Applications Manager, CrodaSurfactants are one of the essential components in emulsion polymers. They provide colloidal stability and control the particle size of the latex. During film formation, adsorbed surfactant is released and causes phase separation and accumulation of surfactant into hydrophilic domains. They adversely affect water resistance, adhesive and mechanical properties. Non-migratory sur-factants (NMS) are reactive and become grafted onto the surface of polymer particles during polymerization. The final latex stability is enhanced with positive effects on shelf life, high shear stability and barrier properties. In adhesives, better water whitening/uptake with improved adhesion was observed.

10:45 – 11:15 a.m.PIR-a New Class of Structural Polyurea Based Adhesives Andreas Dobmann, Know-how Management, nolax AGPIR (polyisocyanurate), are thermoset polymers which are often used for thermal insulation foams. PIR polymers are showing outstanding thermal resistance. The combination of two polymer classes and/or chemical reactions (polyurea and PIR) have led to a new class of structural and ultrafast setting adhesives which can be used for adhesive injection and other applications.

EPA must, over the next two years, develop poli-cies, procedures, and guidance that will provide greater clarity to chemical manufacturers and processors as they plan and invest for the future. This presentation will describe how implementation is playing out, what can be expected from EPA in the near-term, and how chemical processors will be affected. In the long run, the revamped law will increase chemical testing and information gen-eration, re-shape product de-selection in the marketplace, and transform corporate product stewardship programs.

1:15 – 1:45 p.m.Effect of Radial Polymer Structure on the Rheology and Pressure Sensitivity of Styrene-Isoprene-Styrene Based AdhesivesPaul Dalley, Senior Scientist, TSRC Dexco PolymerAt the ASC 2015 Fall Convention, TSRC/Dexco presented a paper discussing the structure property relationships of SIS block co-polymers on the rheology and pressure sensitivity of hot melt ad-hesives. This paper is a continuation of said work, and it will com-pare the structure property relationships of radial SIS versus linear SIS polymers on rheological PS properties of SIS based adhesives. Moreover, the paper will discuss the effect of resin aromaticity on the PSA properties of radial and linear polymers. Additionally, the paper will present rheological and PSA data. Example formula-tions of PS label adhesives will be provided and discussed.

1:45 – 2:15 p.m.Truth or Myth? Do Water-Borne Adhesives Have Difficulties with Water-Resistance?David Schulenberg, Technical Account Manager Southeast Region; Printing, Packaging and Adhesives, BASF CorporationA major share of pressure sensitive adhesives for tapes, labels and films are based on acrylic dispersions. However, when it comes to applications where water resistance is key - e.g. out-door applications - some reluctance in the market to use water-borne systems can be found. There is an often-heard statement: “What comes out of water will go into water”. Does this statement hold water?Within this presentation a general understanding about the phenomena, which occur in adhesive films under wet conditions, is outlined. Based on these findings, dispersions were designed and compared to state-of-the-art solvent-borne or UV-hotmelt acrylics.

This new generation of dispersions can be produced without the help of organic solvents; which is now a prerequisite in an increas-ing number of industries (e.g. food, pharma, automotive). First, the theory of dispersion technology is discussed, followed by experi-mental results of pressure sensitive adhesive (PSA) label applica-tions of existing, traditional PSA formulations compared to the new types of products which can be used in label or technical tape applications.

3:00 to 3:30 p.m.Solventless Silicone Pressure Sensitive Adhesive OverviewNader Mazloom, Technical Service & Development Specialist, Dow Corning CorporationAchieving performance with a more sustainable footprint is possible with alternative delivery systems to solvent based pres-sure sensitive adhesive. Dow Corning’s technology provides the advantages of a silicone PSA in a solventless option. The addition cure mechanism and PSA design allows the use of lower cure temperatures compared to peroxide systems while maintaining high temperature performance. The characteristics of silicone PSAs along with solventless technology will be discussed.

The fabricated idea comes from biological fixed joints as an evolu-tionary alteration processes of trunk-branches of trees. The major attention is to investigate the comprehensive failure modes in the joint numerically and verified by experiments. Investigations were conducted on three different designs of biomimetic composite sandwich T-joints under tension and bending loads. The results show significant improvements to the ultimate load up to 68% in the case of bending load and 40% in the case of pull-off load in the biomimetic sandwich T-joints compared to the reference conventional T-joint design. The FE models provided important insights into the core failure and delamination of multi-interface biomimetic T-joints.

The crashwor-thiness of these structures is initially assessed using finite element simulations in which engineers typically describe the rate-de-pendent deformation and failure of the adhesive using cohesive zone models (CZM). Having an accurate cohesive zone model that can capture the high-rate behavior of the adhesive is criti-cally important to the successful design of crashworthy bonded structures. This talk will focus on what those in the adhesives industry need to know about cohesive zone modeling and how to best conduct experiments to enable measurement and cali-bration of model parameters that can be used as input to finite element simulations.

Satchell’s expertise facilitates global product development, environmental testing, regulatory support, and product registra-tions. He participates in various committees that are directly applicable to common standards used with adhesives and sealant formulations.

DaViD sChuLeNBerGTechnical Account Manager Southeast Region; Printing, Packaging and Adhesives, BASF CorporationDavid received a BS degree in Polymer Chemistry in May, 1977 from the University of Southern Missis-sippi. Out of school, David worked 24+ years for

Mactac (Morgan Adhesives Company) focusing on silicone release work, adhesive product development and formulat-ing, manufacturing support and customer technical service, supporting the Roll Label, Graphics and Specialty Tape market areas. Joined BASF Corporation in 2001 working in the areas of adhesives and fiber bonding dispersions. Focus has been in customer technical support, development of pressure sensitive adhesives, both polymers and coater ready formulations, dis-persions for masking tapes and durable nonwovens. Markets serviced include roll label, masking and specialty tapes, graph-ics, industrial nonwovens and the packaging industry. David currently resides in Charlotte, NC.


KaLeNa sToVaLLNew Product Development Specialist, Imerys CarbonatesDr. Stovall is a polymer chemist and chemical engineer with over 10 years of experience in de-veloping and testing materials and products. She provides a unique perspective to aid in the devel-

opment of new carbonates for today’s industrial challenges in the adhesives and sealants industry.

aNa WaGNerGlobal Strategic Marketing Manager, Dow Automotive SystemsAna Wagner is the Global Strategic Marketing Manager for Body Structures at Dow Automotive. In this role, Ana is responsible for defining and driving the long term strategic direction for Dow Automo-

tive’s business in body structure applications. Ana started her career as an industrial engineer for The Ford Motor Company and she continued in the automotive industry for ten more years in various engineering, marketing, and business development roles in the areas of climate control, interior, and glazing systems. Ana transitioned to the photovoltaic industry where she worked for four years in market development, business strategy, and marketing for Solutia and Energy Conversion Devices. Prior to joining Dow, Ana worked as a channel development director for flat panel electronic displays at Guardian Industries. Ana has a Bachelor of Science degree in Industrial Engineering from Xavier University in Colombia, and an MBA from the University of Michi-gan. Ana speaks native Spanish.

DouG WiCKs Global R&D Director, Imerys CarbonatesDr. Wicks brings more than 25 years of diverse industrial and academic experience to his current role at Imerys Carbonates. Drawing on this experience in formulated products, he and his teamwork daily to reimagine the role of an established industrial work horse.

JoNaThaN WiLKerProfessor, Department of Chemistry and School of Materials Engineering, Purdue UniversityNow at Purdue, Jonathan’s research program focuses on materials produced by marine organ-isms. A particular focus is the adhesives and cements produced by mussels and oysters for

sticking to rocks. Ongoing efforts include characterization of these marine biological materials, developing synthetic poly-mer mimics, and designing applications for these new materi-als. Projects are often inspired by what is seen while out scuba diving. He has published over 50 papers and filed 7 patents.
