The presentation for First Communion of our SMO/SMP young baptized also served to strengthen our knowing and experiencing the Risen Lord when we take, bless, break and share the Eucharistic bread of the Body of the Lord and take, bless and share the Eucharistic wine of the Blood of the Lord. Easter faith bids us to confess the Lordship of Jesus Christ in all we say and do. The 6 weeks of Lenten prayer, fasting, and almsgiving now gives way to our 7 weeks of praise, feasting and stewardship sharing. The Easter Season calls us on to our celebration of the Lord's Ascension on the Seventh Sunday of Easter, recognizing Jesus as Son of God seated in power and glory at the Father's right hand. Then Easter gives way to Pentecost and the presentation of The Holy Spirit upon and within the faithful and community of the Church. When we return to our liturgical Ordinary Time on June 19, we will begin a time far from common as on June 22 Bishop-Elect Thomas Zinkula will be ordained Bishop and be installed as the Ninth Bishop of Davenport. May we prayerfully look forward to the ministry of Bishop Zinkula and give thanks for the 11 years of ministry of Bishop Amos. One of Bishop Amos' closing episcopal ministries will be the conferring of Confirmation on the youth of SMP on June 11. When we pass the summer solstice and come to July 8, SMO/SMP will know the joy of the diaconal ordination of Lowell Van Wyk. Lowell upon ordination will present in ministry to our parishes. The Anglican Bishop and theologian John A. T. Robinson noted that "Ordained ministry is not, vicarious, to

The ordained deacon is given formal authority to minister in the word, at the altar and in charity in the name of the Church, as every member should proclaim and preach the word of God, pray and assist at the altar in conscious and active participation in the Eucharistic celebration and steward their love of God and neighbor in practical charity. As the faith of those who presented for greater participation in God's grace in the Sacraments of Initiation enrich our participation in the grace of our Baptism, Confirmation and Eucharist so does one who presents for Ordained Ministry enrich our ministering in grace within and without the Church. Parish leaders are in the process of negotiating and coming to terms with Central College on an asset swap for the Peace Street church building. There are a couple of items pending yet, but it appears that all should close as of May 31st. Leading up to this time, tables and chairs in the old church are available to parishioners from May 15th-25th; suggested prices are $10/table and $1/chair. Pews as well can be bought at $50/pew. The pews will be loosened, but the purchaser will need to pick them up and haul them away. If you should have any questions or concerns, please call Sarah Buchheit at 641-780-0928. Thank you.

St. Mary Catholic Church is excited to announce the anticipated release of our own parish app. This new app will be available for parishioners to download on both Apple iPhones and Android phones. We expect the features and capabilities of our new app to foster a stronger sense of community and faith in the daily lives of all parishioners. St. Mary will be able to communicate quickly and easily with all parishioners via messages and notifications to keep you in the loop with what is going on in our church. You will then be able to quickly reply to messages or RSVP for upcoming events.
Other features will include: the daily readings read at Mass the latest Catholic news from around the world an easy-to-reference list of Catholic prayers with prayer requests a helpful examination of conscience and next confession reminder a reminder feature called “Mass Mode,” for Mass and confession.
This includes phone silencing notification to help encourage us all to be more present while at church

Reglious Education Notes: Catholics in Action Family Style – (July 13-16) – St. Mary’s, Pella Continuing the tradition of the longrunning Catholics in Action youth service program, CIA –Family Style is an exciting new opportunity for families to serve, learn, play and pray together. St. Mary’s Youth have a long history of attending Catholics in Action in our diocese. It is an opportunity to serve others while learning and meeting others along the way. Now we have CIA – Family Style right here! Research on families shows that praying, serving and talking together are three of the most important things families can do to thrive. CIA – Family Style incorporates all three with the additional benefit of getting support from other families. The program is designed to make family life better while improving the lives of others in the community. Who can attend? Any family and any age. Examples: mom, dad, child(ren); single parent, child(ren); grandparent(s) and grandchild(ren), etc. All are welcome! When does the program start and end? Arrive by 6:30 pm on July 13. The program ends by 3 pm on July 16. What is the program fee? $45/person, $200 maximum/family by June 9. $50/person, $220 maximum/family by July 3 Includes lodging, meals, and all program materials.

Bishop-elect Thomas Robert Zinkula, the son of the late Robert and Mary (Volz) Zinkula, grew up on a farm outside of Mt. Vernon, Iowa, with his eight siblings. He earned his high school diploma in 1975 (valedictorian, 4.0 GPA) and was the recipient of the Iowa State Bar Association American Citizenship Award and cited as a State of Iowa Scholar. He was a member of chorus for four years, participating in various musicals. He was a member of two Eastern Iowa Hawkeye Conference championship football teams (1973 & 1974), an Iowa state championship runner-up football team (1973), and a state championship football team (1974). He was named first team all-conference in football (offensive center, 1974). In 2016 he was inducted into the Alumni Hall of Fame (achievement award).
Bishop-elect Zinkula attended Cornell College in Mt. Vernon, where he was an outstanding scholar and football player (defensive noseguard). He graduated summa cum laude with a B.A. in mathematics and economics/business. In 2009, Bishop-elect Zinkula was inducted into the Athletic Hall of Fame (football) at Cornell College. As a junior at Cornell, he was named the Rams’ most valuable player and as a senior, elected team captain. He was named first-team All-Midwest Conference and first-team Academic All-American, 1976-78, and honorable mention AP College Division All-American, 1978. Years later he was named to Cornell’s all-century football team. His college awards include Phi Beta Kappa, Mortar Board, and an NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship.
He worked in the insurance industry for a year as an actuary at Life Investors in Cedar Rapids before entering law school at the University of Iowa. He wrote articles for and was the managing editor of the Iowa Law Review. After graduating with a juris doctor degree in 1983, he practiced law at the Simmons, Perrine, Albright & Ellwood law firm in Cedar Rapids.
During three years working as an attorney, he felt a strong call to the priesthood. He attended Theological College in Washington, D.C., and received a Master of Arts degree in theology from the Catholic University of America in 1989. He was ordained to the priesthood for the Archdiocese of Dubuque on May 26, 1990, by Most Rev. Daniel Kucera, Archbishop of Dubuque, at St. Raphael Cathedral in Dubuque.
Bishop-elect Zinkula was assigned to St. Columbkille Parish, Dubuque, from 1990 – 1993 as associate pastor and also worked in the metropolitan tribunal during that time. He then was assigned to St. Joseph the Worker Parish, Dubuque, from 1993 – 1996 as associate pastor, while continuing to work in the tribunal.
He attended St. Paul University in Ottawa, Canada from 1996 – 1998 and earned a licentiate in canon law (JCL). While serving as a judge in the tribunal, he was also assigned to St. Joseph Parish, Rickardsville, as pastor and as sacramental priest for St. Francis Parish, Balltown, and Ss. Peter & Paul Parish, Sherrill, from 1998 – 2002. In 2000, he was appointed as judicial vicar until 2010, during which time he also was assigned to the St. LaSalle Pastorate in Dubuque County as sacramental priest from 2001 – 2005. He was assigned as pastor of Holy Ghost Parish in Dubuque from 2005 – 2007 and Holy Spirit Pastorate, Dubuque, from 2007 – 2011. After a sabbatical in Rome, he was assigned as episcopal vicar for the Cedar Rapids Region until 2014. He also served on the board of trustees of Clarke University, the Priest Council, the Priests’ Pension Board, the Archbishop’s Cabinet, the Archdiocesan Consultors, the Archdiocesan Pastoral Council and various committees.
Bishop-elect Zinkula is currently assigned as rector of St. Pius X Seminary in Dubuque.

BUILDING FUND UPDATE
The Legacy of Faith support envelope will end this June. The requested one-year extension of this campaign and proceeds from the sale of the Peace St. Rectory has enabled St. Mary Parish to pay off the building mortgage for the new church, office, hall and faith formation areas. St. Mary Parish looks to hold a gratitude and mortgage burning celebration on July 29.
As of July, 2017 a Capital Improvement Fund support envelope will be established. The specific purpose of this envelope is to provide funds for maintenance projects beyond everyday needs and which are not at such significant cost so as to require a financial capital campaign. Noted here is the storage building now under construction at the northeast corner of the Faith Formation wing. The sale of the rectory and the resulting loss of its basement and garage storage space necessitated the provision of this storage building. The cost for this storage facility has been met by general and restricted gifts and past Tulip Time and Spring Into Auction funding.
Two more formal Capital Campaign projects are also on the horizon. The first is needed roof repairs through out the 218th Place facility. At the time of the completion of the construction of the building significant roofing deficiencies were discovered. Talks aimed at the satisfactory resolution of these problems were entered into with the roofing contractor. Before an agreement could be reached on these issues the contractor entered into bankruptcy. This bankruptcy filing ended any opportunity for St. Mary Parish to gain additional work to resolve these deficiencies. Given more recent presentations of roof leaks in time of more severe storms, proposals for roof work and project bids are now being sought.
The other less immediate formal Capital Campaign project is St. Mary Parish’s partnering with city and county for the asphalt paving of 218th Place from Washington St. to just beyond the driveway entrance into St. Mary’s drive and parking lot. While this is a partnership with the city and county it will bring a significant financial cost to St. Mary Parish. At this time the county engineer is reviewing this project and determining its cost. Once the county has a cost estimate for this project then the city, county and St. Mary Parish will know each of their financial obligations to bring this project to completion a few years from now. A joint subcommittee of the Finance and Parish Councils has been working very diligently behind the scenes with our city and county government representatives to make this road a reality. Capital campaign funding is exempt from the calculation of parish income which is used to determine a parish’s diocesan support by way of its ADA goal. Though Easter day is over the season is still going! You will continue to hear how we are a Resurrection people! Music will reflect this by singing Jesus Christ is Risen, Alleluia and Sing a new Song to the Lord! So exciting!
Summer is coming and music must continue! If you are wanting to get into the music ministry but have been unsure, NOW is the time as it is more casual in the summer months. Children are welcome to sing if their parents/siblings sing. This is a great way to get our young people involved in the Mass.
AS YOU TRAVEL this summer go to Mass and bring home new music. This is where I get new ideas for music! I love finding new music and YOU make that happen during these summer days.
