From the Pastor’s Desk:
In a time that we are living in today, there are so many distractions, things that take our minds off of Christ. We must hold on, press forward and let NOTHING prevent us from being the Christian that we were born to be. We must declare to ourselves that “I’ll let nothing separate me from the love of God”.
The unrest in our country is a huge distraction but we must put this all in God’s hand. There are things we agree on and things we disagree on. Nevertheless, whatever our situation, we must believe God to take care of us.
We must and we should pray that God will guide our leaders in everything they say and do. We must pray for peace where there is unrest, pray for hope when it feels like there is none and have faith in spite of what we see.
Going forward we are approaching the Holy Season, so I encourage you to put your trust in God and remember what He said in II Chronicles 7:14 “If my people, which are called by my name, shall humble themselves, and pray, and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways; then will I hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin, and will heal their land.” Let us do as He commands.
Please let me thank all the willing workers of St. Luke for their faithfulness, their diligence and commitment in every area of ministry here at St. Luke. No Pastor could ask for anything more than a people who love the Lord and are willing to work in His kingdom. My prayer is that God will continue to bless you all beyond your GREATEST EXPECTATIONS.
Peace and Blessings,
Until next time,
Rev. Marjorie McDaniel-Burnett

Celebrating Black History Month February 2017
Mary Violet Leontyne Price (born February 10, 1927) is an American soprano. Born and raised in Laurel, Mississippi she rose to international acclaim in the 1950s and 1960s, and was one of the first African Americans to become a leading artist at the Metropolitan Opera.
Paul Leroy Robeson ( April 9, 1898 – January 23, 1976) was an American bass singer and actor who became involved with the Civil Rights Movement. At Rutgers College, he was an outstanding American football player, and then had an international career in singing, with a distinctive, powerful, deep bass voice, as well as acting in theater and movies. He became politically involved in response to the Spanish Civil War, fascism, and social injustices. His advocacy of anti-imperialism, affiliation with communism, and criticism of the United States government caused him to be blacklisted during the McCarthy era. Ill health forced him into retirement from his career.
Gordon Parks (November 30, 1912 – March 7, 2006) was an American photographer, musician, writer and film director, who became prominent in U.S. documentary photojournalism in the 1940s through 1970s—particularly in issues of civil rights, poverty and African-Americans—and in glamour photography. As the first famous pioneer among black filmmakers, he was the first African-American to produce and direct major motion pictures—developing films relating the experience of slaves and struggling black Americans, and creating the "blaxploitation" genre. He is best remembered for his iconic photos of poor Americans during the 1940s (taken for a federal government project), for his
photographic essays for Life magazine, and as the director of the 1971 film Shaft. Parks also was an author, poet and composer
Maya Angelou born Marguerite Annie Johnson; April 4, 1928 – May 28, 2014) was an American poet, memoirist, and civil rights activist. She published seven autobiographies, three books of essays, several books of poetry, and was credited with a list of plays, movies, and television shows spanning over 50 years. She received dozens of awards and more than 50 honorary degrees.[3] Angelou is best known for her series of seven autobiographies, which focus on her childhood and early adult experiences. The first, I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings (1969), tells of her life up to the age of 17 and brought her international recognition and acclaim.
