THE SCIENTIFIC MONTHLY-ADVERTISEMENTS iii

THE SCIENCE LIBRARY AT THE ANNUAL SCIENCE EXHIBITION OF THE AMERICAN

ASSOCIATION FOR THE ADVANCEMENT OF SCIENCE

TIIE SCIENCE LIBRARY as part of the Annual Science Exhibition is a regular institution of annual meetings of the American Association for the Advance- ment of Science and affiliated societies.

The exhibition will be held this year in the banquet roorn of Murat Theater, Indianapolis, Indiana, December 27, 28, 29 and 30.

The following list of books published in 1937 are those submitted by the pub- lishers, as they grouped and classified them. The groups are in accord with the sections of the association, and the classes indicate the type of reader that should normally be interested. These classes are denoted by the following letters:

J: Juvenile. TU: Text-books for University and College. TH: Text-books for High School.

iR: Reference. P: Popular. S: Study and Teaching. B: Biography.

There are listed only 12 books for juveniles. Mr. W. Maxwell Reed, the eminent writer of juvenile books, has commented upon the small number of such books produced in recent years. Obviously, if more good books in science for juveniles were written, there would be more readers for this class of books, and the groundwork would be laid for the increased use of science books in the future. After consultation and discus- sion Mr. Reed has offered the opinion that an occasional award for meritorious productions in this field would tend to enlarge the number of able juvenile authors. Since the Junior Academies of Science are increasing, we may look for- ward to the time when our association may announce at its annual meeting awards for science books which best serve the juveniles.

The ce:nterpiece of the library will be the Orion, by Rand McNally and Com- pany. This celestial globe on a Bakelite base is designed for the amateur in find- ing and studying the stars.
