THE PERUVIAN ECONOMY AND
STRucTURAL ADJUSTMENT:
PAST, PREENT, AND FuUi
edited by Efrain Gonzales de Olarte
ine distinguished economists analyze Peru's economic situation, review its background, and forecast the nation's economic
future. Among the topics covered are analyses of the history of long- term changes, reforms, and economic stabiliza- tion programs and current institutional and economic structures, focusing on the dynamic * * I!N I!! sectors, including coca and cocaine. The struc- tural adjustment program's principal areas of concern are discussed: diversification of pro- ductivity, unemployment, unequal income dis- tribution, encouragement of entrepreneurial leadership, and sustained reform. In addition, this work includes analyses of the role of the real exchange rate in macroeconomic policy
and several scenarios based on a financial model that forecasts the Peruvian economy's behavior during the next few years.
Efrain Gonzales de Olarte is a senior researcher at the Instituto de Estudios Peruanos in Lima.
