Religion in Terms of Social Consciousness, by PROFESSOR EDWARD SCRIBNER AMES, of the University of Chicago.

The Historical Reconstruction of Hebrew Religion and Archaeology, by PRO- FESSOR JULIAN MORGENSTERN, of Hebrew Union College, Cincinnati.

Religion and the New Cultural Movement in China, by PROFESSOR CLARENCE H. HAMILTON, of the University of Nanking, China.

The Common Problems of Theological Schools, by PROFESSOR WILLIAM ADAMS BROWN, of Union Theological Seminary.

SOME OPINIONS CONCERNING THE JOURNAL OF RELIGION

From a State Director of Religious Education: "It seems to me your new journal is striking my sore places and immaturities

as though you had very carefully diagnosed my condition .... I thought so highly of the journal that I told several of the men about it at the --- conference yester- day, and sought to get them to read the journal."

From a College President: "I have looked over with very genuine interest this first number, and it seems

to me to promise excellently."

From a Pastor:

"I expected a first-class journal, but I also expected that the first number might leave room for improvement-and I am afraid it cannot be improved. The first number is good enough, and leaves little room for improvement."

From the Editors of an influential Review: "This note of congratulation is none the less hearty altho belated. The editors

of the -- feel that the times and the needs of the religious world today call for just such a publication as the Journal of Religion. Any journal that has the courage of its convictions, is free from sectarian bias, stands for universal fellowship of the spirit, and holds up ideals that make for self-realization will fill an enviable place in the religious world. The first number of the Journal of Religion from a mechanical point of view gives evidence of fine discrimination, and from the religious side the articles are most rewarding."

Proceedings of the

National Conference of Social Work (Formerly, National Conference of Charities and Correction)

Forty-seventh Annual Session, Held in New Orleans, Louisiana April 14-21, 1920

At the forty-seventh annual session of the National Conference of Social Work (formerly the National Conference of Charities and Correction), held in New Orleans in April, 1920, the president of the Conference, Mr. Owen R. Lovejoy, said in the opening address: "The race is old enough to have abolished poverty so that humanity could devote some of its energy to a higher pursuit than the mere search for food. But poverty has not been abolished. More money and effort will be expended this year than in any previous year in the world's history to alleviate the distresses of poverty and to cure injuries that have already been done. The world is in tragic need of social engineers, or adventurers into the rich realm of possibility and freedom. But they must be adventurers who are willing to teach and not to dictate."

This keynote to the discussions of the most significant meeting in the history of the Conference was repeated in many other addresses which were given by leaders in the various phases of philanthropic social work. Among the addresses contained in this volume are those by Jane Addams, on "The Spirit of Social Service"; Felix Adler, on "The Next Step to Be Taken by the National Child Labor Committee"; Hastings H. Hart, on "The Place of State Surveys in Framing State Legislation"; Sherman C. Kingsley, on "Interpretative Publicity"; C. J. Galpin, on "Signs of Rural Hope"; E. G. Routzahn, on "The Elements of a Social Educational Pub- licity Campaign"; and Robert E. Park, on "Foreign Language Press and Social Progress."

A Harmony of the Synoptic Gospels in Greek

By ERNEST D. BURTON and EDGAR J. GOODSPEED

$3.00, postpaid $3.15

41, The problem of determining the relations of our first three gospels to one another, and ascertaining their sources, though studied for over a century, is one that is still but partially solved. Yet on its solution depends the decision of many important questions concerning early Christian thought and especially the teaching of Jesus. The purpose of this volume is to facilitate that careful comparison of the several gospels, sentence by sentence, even word by word, which is the first condition of success in the study of the mutual relation of the gospels, and an indispensable basis for advanced study of their contents.
