Dear Reader
Art, wrote Oscar Wilde, should never try to be popular; rather should
the public try to make itself artistic. It is the object of this journal to
contribute to that process.
Our need of art and imagery, however inarticulately expressed, is
original and remains fundamental throughout our lives. History shows
that the place accorded to art at any time has been a revealing barometer of both the intellectual and material achievement of its host
society.
Imagination is the forerunner of innovation and all human achievement
shares a common high ground. The insistent need for visual expression ? whether as graffiti on walls or paint on canvas or forms in stone or
bronze ? has its origin in the shadows of our minds where the lure of
magic has not entirely lost its hold and where the urge towards
creativity takes root.
It is a priority of a responsible society to encourage the arts and visual
awareness and expression in all their forms for all of its people. The
Irish Arts Review has made a courageous and distinctive contribution to
this task. It has established itself as an informative and highly effective
source of appraisal of the arts in Ireland.
It is a pleasure to announce our sponsorship; we look forward with
anticipation to a fruitful association.
T.A. Ryan,

CIRCA
Ireland's only contemporary art journal devoted
exclusively to Visual Art.
Regular features include articles on issues related
to contemporary art practice, profiles on artists, art
notes, news and reviews. "The admirable art journal CIRCA (to which I owe most of what I've learned
about Irish art)." Lucy R. Lippard
"There are, other magazines that really stand out from the bunch?
"PERFORMANCE', 'CIRCA',... These magazines are not content merely to
reflect a situation but to be part of it, to present possibilities in the cultural arena for intervention and for opportunity, and to go forward with specific (and overlapping) areas they contribute to". Malcolm Dickson, Transmission
Gallery, Glasgow (in a letter to Alba International Art Magazine).
'7s CIRCA of much interest to artists outside Ireland? Yes, because it is quite simply one of the best magazines in these listings. It is totally professional and in no sense inferior (except financially) to any London-based art
magazine. It just operates within a different frame of reference?one within which art comes into high relief and one with pressures which we may all sooner or later have to get used to. Highly Recommended" David Briers, Artists Newsletter.
