Fifth Sunday of Lent April 2, 2017

Out of the depths I cry to you, O LORD;

LORD, hear my voice! — Psalm 130:1

YÜÉÅ à{x ctáàÉÜËá Wxá~ Every new issue of the seasonal missalette (in the pews) features a different piece of artwork on the cover, depicting one of the Gospel stories or liturgical feasts that fall during the particular time span for the current issue of the missalette. For example, this Sunday’s Gospel is the story of Jesus raising Lazarus from the dead, and the image on the cover of our current missalette features the painting TheResurrectionofLazarus by Jose Casado del Alisal, from the 19th century. The description in the missalette about this painting says: “In thispainting,wecan see the shockandaweon the facesofLazarus’ sisters,MaryandMartha,andevenonthefaceofLazarushimselfasheemergesfromthetomb.Thisisthetruthoftheamazinggiftofferedtous:Despitewhattheworldtellsus,deathdoesnothavethe inalword.” I always think it is worth paying attention to the different paintings featured on our missalette covers, and you can always ind a description of them on Page 2 of each missalette under the heading, “About the Cover.” These next two weeks are very busy as we draw closer to Easter. It’s not too early to look ahead to Holy Week, so please take time to review our Holy Week schedule printed in this week’s bulletin, as well as at the exits of church. I’d like to emphasize some things about it. First, make plans to join us for our LentenReconciliationServiceat7:00pmonMonday,April10thatSt.MariaGorettiParish. Several priests will be available for confession. The sacrament of Reconciliation is an invaluable part of the Lenten season, and a perfect way to prepare for Easter. In fact, celebrating one confession has a more lasting effect on our souls than giving something up for 40 days of Lent. The power of confession is something that the saints recognized and embraced, and we should too. Some other notes to make about Holy Week: (1) There are no 8:30am morning Masses celebrated during the Triduum (April 13-15) because the only liturgies that can be celebrated on those days are the special ones proper to those feast days; (2) No confessions will be heard on Holy Saturday, April 15th (which is all the more reason to come to the penance service on April 10th!); (3) The Mass time for the Easter Vigil on Holy Saturday has been moved to 7:30pm, because this Mass is supposed to begin after sundown; (4) You can still volunteer to have your foot washed during the Mass of the Lord’s Supper on Holy Thursday, April 13th at 7:00pm. Anyone is welcome to volunteer. If you are interested in helping with this important aspect of this beautiful Mass, please contact Betty Rutan at (847) 671-3676. Turning attention back to this current week, I hope you can join us for two inal events during the Lenten season. On Monday, April 3rd at 7:00pm we will show our last Catholicism:PivotalPlayers episode featuring a renowned theologian and Doctor of the Church, St. Thomas Aquinas. St. Thomas is one of the most signi icant and in luential igures in the history of the Catholic Church and Western philosophy (and if you’ve been coming to these DVD nights, then you’ve probably caught on that St. Thomas Aquinas is Bishop Barron’s favorite saint and theologian!) The other “last” happening this week is our inal Stations of the Cross and Eucharistic Adoration on Friday, April 7th at 7:00pm. If you’ve missed coming to Stations this Lent, make plans to join us this week. And for any events that you do plan to attend, whether this week or Holy Week, try to bring a friend with you, for we should never forget that our mission is to evangelize! St. Beatrice, pray for us. May God bless you. Fr. Rob

8th Annual Living Stations Please join us on

Good Friday, April 14th as our Religious Education students present

The Living Stations of the Cross at 7pm in the church.

What We’re Learning 1st Grade We learned that a sin is anything we do that is displeasing to God. It can be something we do, think, or say, or something we don’t do but are supposed to do. God’s love for us is greater than any sin. When we commit a sin and are truly sorry in our hearts and minds and tell God that we are sorry, we receive forgiveness. 2nd Grade We learned about the “Ark of the Covenant” that the Jewish people put the stone tablets of the commandments given by God to Moses in. The Jewish people kept the Ark and its contents celebrating it as a gift of God’s love to them. We learned about Moses being called by God to lead the Jewish people out of slavery in Egypt and to the Promised Land.

3rd Grade We learned that by going to church on Ash Wednes-day that was the beginning of Lent. From Ash Wednesday until the end of Lent we reflect on our faith and pray to God to help us to grow in our faith.
