sur la Croisette ?Johnny Depp : Je n’avais aucun film à présenter, mais j’accompagnais mon ami Emir Kusturica. Je suis resté enfermé dans une chambre du Gray d’Albion, durant tout mon séjour. A chaque fois que je mettais un pied dans le couloir, il y avait des paparazzis qui m’attendaient !Gala : Pourquoi revenez-vous alors à Cannes, cette année ?J. D. : Peut-être par nostalgie et parce que je me sens désormais chez moi en France. Il n’empêche que je culpabilise un petit peu à l’idée que la présentation de Pirates des Caraïbes 4 se fasse au détriment de petits films indépendants.Gala : Vous vivez une partie de l’année en France. Gala: You have come to Cannes Film

Festival to present Pirates of the

Caribbean 4: On Stranger Tides, this

year. What do you remember from

your first time on the Croisette?

Johnny Depp: I didn’t have a film to present, but

I had just come with my friend Emir Kusturica.

I stayed at Gray d’Albion and I remember shutting

myself in my room the whole time. Every time

I tried to set foot in the hotel corridor, there were

paparazzi waiting for me!

Gala: So why have you come back to Cannes?

J.D.: Maybe a bit from nostalgia, and now I feel

completely at home in France. At the same time,

I feel a little guilty about having prevented some

independent films from having their premiere at

Cannes because of Pirates.

Gala: You feel at home in France, but how

do you continue to manage your Hollywood

career from such a distance?

J.D.: It’s a problem of organisation and balance.

I need to be creative, and living far from Hollywood

actually allows me to stay inspired… while keeping

enough distance so I don’t go crazy (smiles).

Gala: With actress Astrid Berges-Frisbey, have

you been able to practice your French?

J.D.: Absolutely. She is a sweet and lovely young

girl. Very patient too, because her mermaid

costume was difficult to wear.

Gala: Rumour has it that you are no longer

going to appear onscreen with your partner,

Vanessa Paradis, in the American Lover

project about the love story between Simone

de Beauvoir and Nelson Algren...

J.D.: No, that’s totally false. With Lasse Hallström,

we have precisely concluded that it should above

all be centred on the life of Simone de Beauvoir.

Vanessa will be amazing in this project.

Gala: Do you ever watch one of your films

with your family?

J.D.: Sometimes my kids put on a DVD like Charlie

and the Chocolate Factory. But most of the time

they do, it when I’m not home. If I happen to be

there, I run away immediately because my kids

don’t hesitate to criticize my performance.

Gala: Penelope Cruz was pregnant during

filming Pirates. Did the arrival of her baby

make you want to have a third child with

Vanessa?

J.D.: Obviously, it gives you ideas (laughs). Seeing

Javier and Penelope coming to the house with their

little angel brings back wonderful memories. But

we are happy with our two children.

Gala : Avec Polisse, sélectionné en compétition, vous vous intéressez à la brigade de protection des mineurs. Quelle

était votre intention ?Maïwenn : Ce qui m’a séduite, c’était de montrer la passion de ces policiers pour leur métier, leurs armes pour se protéger de la misère humaine et comment celle-ci s’infiltre dans leur propre vie, malgré tout. Un policier de la brigade de protection des mineurs ne reste pas plus de dix ans dans son unité, tellement son quotidien est dur !Gala : Pourquoi incarner une photographe, plutôt qu’une policière, dans votre film ?Maïwenn : Peut-être qu’inconsciemment, j’ai choisi un rôle proche de mon statut de réalisatrice. Mais je ne l’ai pas bien vécu. Mon personnage est tout en intériorité, alors qu’il me fallait déployer de l’énergie pour la réalisation. Je me suis très vite avoué que j’étais ma propre erreur de casting !Gala : Offrir un rôle de policier à JoeyStarr, n’était-ce pas osé ?Maïwenn : C’est une question qu’on m’a souvent posée. Et pourquoi pas ? Quand Depardieu joue un flic, personne ne s’en étonne. En tout cas, je peux vous dire qu’il s’est très bien entendu avec les policiers sur le tournage.Gala : Avez-vous encouragé l’improvisa-tion, comme dans vos précédents films ?Maïwenn : Tout dépendait de la scène et du nombre d’acteurs. Si je sens qu’un acteur dépense de l’énergie à se souvenir de son texte, je lui dis de l’oublier. J’aime reproduire la réalité sur un plateau.Gala : Tourner avec des enfants fut-il difficile ?Maïwenn : Le vrai problème, c’était la Ddass. J’ai dû m’engager à ne pas leur faire improviser des scènes dans lesquelles il était question de sexe. Sur les plateaux, j’étais suivie en permanence par une psychologue et un inspecteur.Gala : La sélection officielle inclut beaucoup plus de réalisatrices cette année. Qu’en pensez-vous ?Maïwenn : Il n’y a pas à débattre. Je trouve-rais aberrante la mise en place de quotas et je détesterais être sélectionnée pour satisfaire ces quotas. Thierry Frémaux et son comité aiment suffisamment le cinéma pour juger quels films, qu’ils soient réalisés par des hommes ou des femmes, ont leur place à Cannes.

Gala: With Poliss, which is a competition

selection, you focus on a police

department’s juvenile protection unit.

What was your intention?

Maïwenn: What appealed to me was showing the

passion these officers have for their work, the ways

they protect themselves from the human misery

and how it nevertheless seeps into their own lives.

The day-to-day reality of this work is so tough,

juvenile protection unit officers don’t stay in their

unit more than ten years!

Gala: Why play a photographer, rather than a

police officer, in your movie?

Maïwenn: Maybe I subconsciously chose a role

closer to my status as director. But it was hard to do.

My character is all about interiority, though I had to

put out a lot of energy to achieve that. I had to

quickly acknowledge that I was my own casting

mistake!

Gala: Don’t you think giving JoeyStarr a

policeman’s role was an audacious move?

Maïwenn: I get asked that question a lot. Why not?

When Depardieu plays a cop, nobody is surprised.

And anyway, I can tell you he got along really well

with the police during the shoot.

Gala: Did you encourage improvisation, like

you have in previous films?

Maïwenn: Everything depended on the scene and

the number of actors. If I sense that an actor is

wasting energy trying to remember his lines, I tell

him to forget them. I like reproducing reality on a

set.

Gala: Was it hard working with children?

Maïwenn: The real problem was the health and

social affairs department. I had to promise not to let

them improvise any scenes involving sex. I was

thoughts on that?

Maïwenn: There’s nothing to discuss, really. I find

establishing quotas absurd and I’d hate being

selected to meet those quotas. Thierry Fremaux

and his committee like the movie business enough

to judge which films have a place at Cannes,

whether they’re directed by a man or a woman.

Gala : Vous venez de rentrer dans le cercle très fermé des ambassadrices L’Oréal. Surprise ?Leïla Bekhti : Lorsqu’ils m’ont contactée, j’ai d’abord cru que c’était mon frère qui me faisait une blague ! J’aime l’idée que ce

soit une marque de luxe accessible et, comme ma mère avant moi, j’utilise leurs produits depuis toujours. C’est un peu une histoire de famille.Gala : Vous appréhendez de monter les marches le 21 mai pour le film La source des femmes, de Radu Mihaileanu ?L. B. : J’ai déjà monté les marches pour le Prophète, il y a deux ans, et pour fêter le million d’entrées avec Géraldine Nakache, mais c’est la première fois que je viens avec un film en compétition. Je n’aurai jamais assez d’une vie pour remercier Radu pour le rôle qu’il m’a offert. Le slogan de L’Oréal va très bien aux femmes marocaines avec qui nous avons tourné le film, elles le valent vraiment bien. Elles seront avec nous pour la montée des marches.Gala : Le César du meilleur espoir féminin, un film qui a cartonné au box-office, un autre sélectionné à Cannes, que peut-on encore vous souhaiter ?L. B. : Avec mes 27 petites années, je suis très consciente de la chance que j’ai, je vis de mon métier, tout en sachant que cela peut s’arrêter demain. circle of L’Oreal ambassadresses.

Are you surprised?

Leila Bekhti: When they contacted me,

at first I thought it was my brother

playing a joke on me! I like the idea of it

being an accessible luxury brand and,

like my mother before me, I’ve always

used their products. It’s a bit like carrying

on the family history.

Gala: Are you nervous about

climbing the stairs on May 21st for

Radu Mihaileanu’s movie The

Source?

L.B.: I already climbed the stairs for the A

Prophet screening two years ago, and to

celebrate the one-million-tickets mark

with Géraldine Nakache, but this is the

first time I have a film in competition. I’ll

never live long enough to properly thank

Radu for the role he gave me. The L’Oreal

slogan works really for the Moroccan

women with whom we shot the film:

they’re worth it. They’ll be with us for the

red carpet walk.

Gala: The César for most promising

actress, a film that was a box-office

smash, another selected at Cannes,

what more can we wish for you?

L. B.: I’m just 27, and I’m very aware of

how lucky I am; I make a living at what I

do, all the while knowing that it could all

end tomorrow. All I want is to never take

it for granted, to keep feeling the wonder

of it.

Gala: Between the Cannes Film

Festival and your film All That

Glitters, it seems fiction and reality

have become one. Have you

already chosen your dress?

L. B.: I do everything at the last minute

and on instinct. I’ll put on a dress that I

feel comfortable in, not disguised. The

only thing on my mind is the pleasure.

Radu created the RDK, the Republique

du Kif, the Republic of Fun, and I moved

there!

rouges et chaises de cabaret. Au menu, homard aux petits

légumes, bar de ligne, artichauts croquants et fleurs de

For the very popular Paris Canaille evening, Jean-Paul Gaultier

made over the covered Forville market, in the older part of

Cannes, like the Montmartre hill. A very couture village party

atmosphere was created using crates of fruit and vegetables,

fishnet tablecloths, garlands, red feathers and candles, and

cabaret chairs. On the menu: lobster with baby vegetables,

sea bass, crispy artichoke and courgette flowers, Gariguette

Délicieuse INÈS DE LA FRESSANGE. Elle a fait l’unanimité, à Cannes, dans les showrooms où elle a pointé son nez. Chaleureuse, joviale, cette fan de mode, qui ne quittait pas sa coau-teur de La Parisienne, SOPHIE GACHET, s’est même acharnée à refuser les cadeaux offerts par les marques, enchantant tout le monde par sa fraîcheur et vantant les mérites de Cannes, véritable « pays de cocagne ».

Après la conférence de presse de Kung Fu Panda 2, l’agent de DUSTIN HOFFMAN lui a demandé de suivre quelques minutes ANGELINA JOLIE et JACK BLACK. Dustin a refusé et a préféré monter seul dans une suite du Carlton. Entre Jack et lui, l’ambiance serait à couteaux tirés. Dustin n’a-t-il pas fait semblant de ronfler pen-dant la présentation à la presse quand Jack a répondu brièvement à une question ?

Un red carpet un peu particulier. Des brebis sont attendues en bas des marches du Palais des fes-tivals, samedi soir, pour la projection du docu-mentaire TOUS AU LARZAC. On adore.

En dépit de la folie ambiante, certains ne per-dent pas leurs bonnes habitudes. YVES LECOQ, la voix des Guignols au Grand Journal, est ren-tré de son jogging à 12 h 30 au 7e étage du Mar-tinez. Transpirant, mais en forme.

Il portera beau. JEAN-PAUL BELMONDO sera en costume deux boutons Ermenegildo Zegna avec nœud papillon pour sa montée des marches le 17. Et l’on murmure qu’il arriverait la veille pour se préparer au Grand Barnum cannois.

Un peu déphasée LADY GAGA. Après avoir par-ticipé au 6/9 de NRJ avec Nikos sur la Croisette, la star a voulu rentrer gentiment dans sa cham-bre. Armée d’une clef 302, elle s’est rendue au Palais Stéphanie. Las, si le numéro était le bon, l’hôtel, en revanche, n’était pas le sien. Elle logeait au Carlton…

FENDI, EXTÉRIEUR JOUR La maison de couture italienne a installé son showroom VIP au Martinez. Une suite chic et glam au design Fendi Casa. Silvia Fendi arrivera la semaine prochaine à Cannes. Vraie passionnée de cinéma (elle assistait, enfant, aux essayages de sa mère sur les films de Visconti ou Fellini), la créatrice est désormais également productrice de film.
