The Distinguished Recipients of the Junior Achievement

Manitoba Business Hall of Fame 2014

The Canadian Business Hall of Fame was established by Junior Achievement of Canada in 1979. Companions are nominated by their peers and are chosen by an independent selection committee representing Canada's foremost business, academic and media institutions. The Junior Achievement Manitoba Business Hall of Fame celebrates the lifetime achievement of individuals within the business community who have been leaders in entrepreneurship in Manitoba and Canada. From a practical and necessary perspective, the Manitoba Business Hall of Fame is a long term fundraising solution. On an ongoing basis we anticipate that the additional funding will allow us to reach a greater number of Manitoba youth. In 2013, Junior Achievement Manitoba established the Manitoba Business Hall of Fame. Six individuals were inducted: Izzy Asper, James Armstrong Richardson, Muriel Richardson, Samuel Bronfman, Albert Cohen and Sir Clifford Sifton.

This second group of business leaders will form the next group to be inducted at a ceremony and dinner on May 22, 2014 at the Metropolitan Entertainment Centre. They are:

John Buhler Jim Burns Robert Chipman Arthur Mauro Lawrie Pollard

The Junior Achievement Manitoba Business Hall of Fame recognizes the cumulative work of individuals over a lifetime dedicated to enhancing the economic prosperity of Manitoba through their business endeavors. Inductees are widely respected for their integrity, business acumen and community contributions. They are regarded as inspiring role models for enterprising Junior Achievement students and young Canadians for generations to come.

INTRODUCTION TO JUNIOR ACHIEVEMENT

In 1963 Junior Achievement of Manitoba was introduced to Winnipeg, Manitoba by four businessmen entrepreneurs J.A. (Jim) Shore, D.A Pollard, N.J. Alexander and F.W. P. Heffelfinger. In 1979, the province granted a franchise to Junior Achievement of Manitoba Inc. Junior Achievement of Manitoba offers five business education programs, delivered at no cost to elementary, middle and high school students (ages 10 through 18). More than 175 schools throughout Manitoba participate in JA every year. Delivered by local volunteers, JA programs enable young people to develop essential life skills through exposure to interactive activities and innovative business solutions. Programs are delivered in rural Manitoba, northern Manitoba, and in Winnipeg. An emphasis is put on core area schools and First Nation’s reserves with the intent of educating more Aboriginal students so that they can successfully integrate themselves into the workforce. During the 2012/13 school year, Junior Achievement of Manitoba delivered programs to over 7,000 students in 300 classrooms across the province THE ISSUES WE ADDRESS The three areas that we focus on are: Financial Literacy, Workforce Readiness and Entrepreneurship. In today’s challenging economic times, it is becoming clear how important these lessons are to our youth.

Financial Literacy – teaching kids at an early age how to understand and manage money.

Entrepreneurship – to show kids at an early age that there are always options if they have a passion for something and want to try out the business world at any point in their career.

Workforce Readiness – helps kids understand the working world as they enter it as part- time employees and eventually as full-time contributing employees in their chosen field. Junior Achievement is an enhancement to a student’s educational environment with a view to maximizing benefits to Manitoba’s society.

THE IMPACT OF OUR MESSAGE The lessons of financial literacy, entrepreneurship and workforce readiness are equally applicable during a slumping economy or a flourishing one. Unfortunately, poverty is still a reality across Canada and in Manitoba - in areas like Winnipeg’s core and on some First Nation’s reserves. Through funding provided to JA we deliver many programs to underprivileged areas, in the hopes of presenting options for getting out of and eliminating poverty. These lessons and messages are not in Manitoba’s education curriculum.
