Harper only described the blesbok Damaliscuspygargus phillipsi scientifically as a distinctspecies Damaliscus phillipsi in 1939, based on aram that was shot in the then Orange FreeState. Today the blesbok and the bontebok, both subspecies of Damaliscus pygargus, areknown to differ in at least 13 different geneticmicrosatellite markers.

THE HUNTER AND THE GAME RANCHER

In the article “Hoe Belangrik is Jagters vir die Wildboer?” Dr Pieter vanNiekerk indicates that, while hunters on average contribute 70% plus tothe game rancher’s income, their indirect contribution with regard toconservation sometimes goes unnoticed. He makes the point that game, just like cattle, can damage the veld if game breed uncontrollably andcarrying capacity requirements are not considered.

In this respect hunters play a role to help farmers manage game numbersby hunting surplus animals (and by paying for this privilege) while farm-ers prevent overgrazing and are enabled to produce sustainably.

The figures provided by Dr Van Niekerk for the Eastern Cape with regardto the economic utilisation of ten popular game species will to a greateror lesser extent also apply to other provinces.

The South African game industry can with good reason boast about therole of game ranching in game conservation and the increase in gamenumbers since the seventies. Time and again we can unequivocally statethat game ranches in Limpopo Province currently carry more game thanthe entire Kruger National Park, and that game numbers on private gameranches countrywide now amount to more than that of all the provincialreserves and national parks combined.

This dare not take place at the cost of conservation, but the interactionbetween hunters, game ranchers and conservationists will guarantee this.
