INTRODUCTION TO CORRUGATED
STAINLESS STEEL
TUBING (CSST)
Corrugated Stainless Steel Tubing (CSST) is a flexible, stainless steel tube used to supply natural gas and liquid petroleum gas in residential, commercial and industrial structures. Coated with an exterior plastic coating, CSST is usually routed beneath, through and alongside floor joists in your basement, trenching, inside interior wall cavities and on top of ceiling joists in ceiling spaces.
It has a non-conductive plastic jacket. By using stainless steel with high corrosion resistance in the construction of the tubing ensures safety and service life reaching 50 years. The inner stainless steel layer of typical residential CSST is .2 to .3 mm.

CSST features many benefits over the traditional method in its durability and practicality. CSST has a proven resistance to leaks due to far fewer connections made during installation. When black steel pipe is installed, every time the pipe changes direction, a joint needs to be fitted and checked for leaks. CSST offers flexibility and is able to be snaked through walls and around obstacles with fittings placed only at the ends of the run.
Another benefit of this material is the amount of installation time it saves. By most estimates, CSST can be installed in a third of the time it takes to install black steel pipe. Even though CSST is more expensive than the traditional black steel pipe, its overall cost is less when factoring in labor and installation.
With CSST’s flexible design, leakages caused by earthquakes or buildings subsidence may be minimised.
CCST Gas piping systems should be bonded to the electrical service grounding electrode system according to the applicable standards.

INSTALLATION
OF CSST - The installation must be done by SAQCC Registered Gas Practitioner in accordance with SANS 10087-1 for LPG and 827 for NG.- Care should be taken not to damage the tubing and fittings when transporting or shipping the goods. - Thorough inspection of the tubing should be conducted prior to the installation to make sure that there is no visable defects or damage to the tubing and fittings.- The correct tooling should be used when installing a Gas System in CSST.

CSST FITTINGS TO TUBING
IMPORTANT NOTES
- CSST tubing can be installed in ceilings, walling and in the ground.- CSST tubing must not be installed in direct sunlight, in a damp area or in a weak acid environment where the ph level is less than 7 such as swimming pool areas and chemical plants.- Although the tubing is designed to resist vibration it must not be installed in an area where it would be subject to constant vibration.
CSST piping and fittings should not touch any corrosive liquids such as oxalic acid, heavy duty detergents, pesticide and so on.
WHAT NOT TO DO WHEN INSTALLING CSST
INSTALLATION NOTES
When bending the tubing ensure that your inside radius is not smaller than the recommended installed bend radii according to ISO 10380/
EN15266. As illustrated below.

suggested bending radius
CUTTING THE TUBING1Straighten the tube a 100mm on the roll and cut to the desired length leaving approximately 25mm for fitting attachment. The cut should be centered between two corrugations. Use a CSST Tube Cutter rotating in one direction to leave the tubing round and free of burrs.
STRIP OFF THE COATED LAYER2Using the CSST Coating Cutter, strip cover back to the valley of the second corrugation. Do not cut the cover in such a way that the sealing surface of the tubing is scored. Remove the short piece of cover by peeling the jacket off. Caution: Tube ends are sharp, use care when handling.
MAKE A NEAT CUT TO FIT THE CSST FITTING3
Use the CSST Tube Cutter to cut the now uncoated pipe to 7 corrugations. Ensure that it is a neat cut.
It is important to make sure that there is a neat cut left after step 3. Here are some examples of

INSERT THE STRIPPED TUBE INTO THE MECHANICAL JOINT4
Insert the tubing all the way in making sure that the correct length was stripped off. The tube should press against the rubber gasket on the inside of the fitting and the outter coating should just fit though the seal.

INTRODUCTIONTO PEX PIPING
PEX Piping Installation Guide for Gas InstallationsPEX-AL-PEX pipes or PEX/Aluminum/PEX pipes are made with a layer of aluminum sandwiched between two layers of PEX. The metal layer serves as an oxygen barrier, stopping the oxygen diffusion through the polymer matrix. The aluminum layer is thin, typically 1 or 2mm, and provides some rigidity to the tubes such that when bent it retains the shape formed (normal PEX tube will spring back to straight) The aluminum layer also provides additional structural rigidity such that the tube will be suitable for higher safe operating temperatures and pressures.

STEP ONE1Cut the pipe to the correct length, while using the correct Pex Pipe Cutter tool, A rough or ragged cut may result in a difficult or leaky connection.
STEP TWO2Insert the PEX Reamer tool into the newly cut pipe to ream the end and to create a neat shamfer. Ensure the shamfer created is not smaller than 2mm.
STEP THREE3Push the fitting into the pipe until it touches the fit-ting shoulder. Position the crimp sleeve +- 3mm from the end of the tube. This distance ensures the crimp sleeve is positioned directly over the ribs on the barb.
STEP FOUR4Centre the PEX Adjustable Crimper tool jaws over the sleeve. Hold the crimping tool at 90°C to the fitting and close the jaws completely. If you need to crimp the fitting more than two times you need to cut the fitting off and start over.

COPPER FITTING
Copper tube and fittings are ideally suited for the distribution of LP and Natural Gas. Only SAQCC Registered Gas Installers may undertake installation, extension or repair work on gas systems and their appliances. Copper tube and fittings are readily available and are compatible with each other. They are easily jointed by soldering, brazing or compression fittings to form mechanically strong, gas tight joints. Copper pipework can be easily prefabricated, which can reduce installation time. It is possible to bend copper tube easily and accurately using either flexible springs or bending machines. Copper pipework will last the life time of the building. Copper is 100% recyclable. All of the above factors lead to an easier, cleaner, less time consuming installation. Copper piping should be sleeved when embedded into concrete.
HOW TO
SOLDER COPPER TUBES
1. TOOLING AND EQUIPMENT
Start by getting the right tools, and measuring the copper tube. This expert step by step procedure will guide you through the process on how to cut copper properly and have a leak-free joint. Tools needed:
• Copper Cutter• Wire Brush• Abrasive cloth• Paste Flux • Lead-free Solder• Propane Torch• Gloves• Safety goggles

Apply flux carefully.
Flux needs to be applied evenly at pipe ends and inside the fittings. This product will prevent the copper tube from oxidizing as you heat the copper, so it will start to boil when it is hot enough to solder. There is no benefit if you use a lot of flux, as it will only lead to corrosion inside the copper tube. Do not use bare hands to apply flux or avoid being in contact with flux as its chemicals might be harmful to the skin. Remove excess flux with a cotton cloth.
Start by using a measuring tape to mark where the copper will be cut. Using a tube cutter, cut the copper tubing. Using the cutter is very easy, as you will only need to hold the tube between the cutting wheel and rotate the cutter. The wheel will start to score the tube all the way around. Keep turning, while tightening the cutter so it can score deeper. Repeat as needed. This procedure is valid for all types of copper.

3. REAM AND CLEAN THE COPPER
After the tube has been cut, it needs to be cleaned to have a proper bonding surface. Copper cutters normally are equipped with a reaming blade that can be used to clean all burrs created after the tube has been cut. Do not apply extra pressure as it might deform the tube. Clean the tube by using sand paper, steel wool or a wire brush that can fit inside the copper tube. It should have a shiny look and cannot have any oxidation marks. Do not limit your-
self to the area that will be used for the joint, as you will need to clean a little bit more than the area on which the joint will be to allow for a proper connection. Do not over clean the copper as it might reduce the strength of the copper tube. Avoid touching the copper tube with your bare hands, and even if the tube is new, it must be cleaned.
4. WHAT IS FLUX FOR?

It is important to use only recommended solders, no solders containing lead shall be used. Only solder that complies with S19 and S20 of SANS 24 shall be used for capillary fittings.
5. SOLDERING COPPER TUBES: SOLDER TYPES
Solder will create a silver band.
Once the fitting or tube is in place, start by applying solder at the top of the joint and once it is heated it will start to drip all the way to the bottom of the joint.When it begins to melt, push the solder into the joint and maintain the torch away from the tube. The joint should have a silver band all around it, but you still need to verify that it is actually good. Some experts will recommend to start at the bottom to create a dam that will prevent from using more solder than required. Propane torches are ideal for small jobs, while acetylene used for pipes larger than 3/4 inch.
• Do not solder copper tubing when gas is still running or in the tube. Purge the tube from gas before starting.
• Torches can be lit preferably with a flint striker. Matches and lighters can be dangerous.• Heat the copper tube before soldering and apply heat to both sides.• Be sure that pressure inside the copper tube is released before soldering.• Heat the joints of the copper tube from several sides.• Make sure the solder fills the joint on all sides.• Rotate the torch around the tube for even heat distribution.• Brass fittings will require extra heat.• Set the flame on medium or high to generate enough heat to melt solder. If your flame
is adjusted correctly, it will burn different shades of blue.• Remove any plastic caps or adapters from the copper tube to avoid ruining them.• Always look beyond the tube. Extremely hot temperatures are beyond the visible
portions of the flame.

The choice of a suitable class of copper tube will depend on the particular application and could be influenced by environmental factors (such as soil conditions etc), Reference to the manufac-turer or to a relevant technical body is recommended in cases of uncertainty. Purely as a guide,
the following text is offered for assistance in the selection of an appropriate class of copper tube:
