One hundred and forty years of seeing so many youth have their first Christmas, be the first in the families to graduate high school, enjoy their first trip to the beach, be the first to go to college, the first time getting a job, going to their prom, attending church camp and learning to swim.

It all comes down to each individual child and our being involved in their lives. This year, we have seen Isaiah’s graduation from Morehouse, Jimmy’s graduation from Oglethorpe, Cynthia’s graduation from Armstrong and her beautiful wedding and Marcus off to Ft. Benning.

Thank you for all your support. To the hundreds of churches and tens of thousands supporters. Thank you for standing beside us for 140 years!

We are all a part of a great heritage and circle of love.

Special thanks to those supporters of Camp Possibility.

Through your support, The Methodist Home kids were

able to participate in fun activities this past summer.

• They participated in team building exercises;

• They played Field Day games;

• They played sports like Dodge Ball;

• They went fishing, got to see wildlife,

and went to the pool.

Your support also allowed for trips to White Water,

Six Flags, and the Atlanta Braves’ game. Thank you

for making such a big difference in a child’s life by

restoring childhood memories!

each year, a day’s wages are given by United

methodist Church members to the method-

ist Home. but how did it begin? the Work day

offering for the methodist Home is a tradition

from the 1900s, a time when people, mostly

farmers, donated the equivalent of one day’s

wages to the methodist Home. Sometimes

they would load a freight car with cotton or

peanuts and send it to macon. today folks just today folks just t

use a calculator. the amount of the work day

offering can be calculated quite simply: divide

your annual income by 365 (farmers didn’t take

vacation days). for example, if a person made

$60,000 a year, it would be $60,000 divided by

365= $164. Whether you give cotton or a check,

be assured that your gift will bring hope and a

new lease on life to the more than 400 children

and families we serve every day.

during the summer, eatonton presbyterian Church held an “ark” event for their Summer family fun night. as admission to the “ark”, each family had to bring stuffed animals two by two. they took each of their youth’s pictures so

the youth had a keepsake of the evening. they also had an ark themed meal that night.

Derek W. McAleerVice President for Development & Church Relations

The Methodist Home had its genesis during the days of Reconstruction, when Methodists across Georgia looked for ways to meet the needs of orphaned children. From the beginning, we were not only focused on providing such basics as food and shelter, but also in teaching life skills, providing a sense of place, and preparing children to live as competent and happy adults. For the past 140 years we have expressed the Heart of the South Georgia Conference.

One way we express our mission is that we seek to “restore childhoods, strengthen families, and cultivate a people-building organization”. The boys and girls we serve often come from families which have struggled with many issues, some of them quite traumatic. When adult issues intrude into the life of a child, childhood always loses. Some of the boys and girls come to us burdened with feelings of adult re-sponsibility, but unable to play, to relax with other children, to be free. What’s involved in restoring a childhood? • We create safe spaces. A warm, inviting, healthy environment does much to instill confidence. • We provide safe relationships. Thank you to our wonderful child-care counselors, HSP’s and other staff members who find their calling in providing safe relationships for these boys and girls!

• We provide safe and fun events. Beach trips, going to the movie, playing hopscotch or basketball, bike riding, roller-skating, all of these contribute to a healthy childhood. • We partner for safe schools. Getting an education is vital in our society. Feeling safe at school, and competent to do your school-work, is a wonderful gift for a child. Thank you to the local schools and teachers who partner with us! • We provide safe emotional and therapeutic support. We help our children deal with what has happened, and make the choices that move them towards a better future.

Our calling has been and remains to help the boys and girls we serve have healthy and happy childhoods, during which time they prepare for healthy and happy adulthood. Over 10,000 young people have passed through our doors. Thank you, Lord, for working through us to help your children be children! And thank you, friends and supporters, for part-nering with us to restore childhoods, strengthen families, and build people!

One way we express our mission is that we seek to “restore childhoods, strengthen families, and cultivate a people-building organization”.

Estate planning 101one and done. in sports, it’s a catchphrase for a team’s loss in the first game or match of a tournament. in estate planning, it’s the mind-set of people who think they’re done once they’ve put a will or trust in place.

in truth, estate planning is an ongoing process. ensure that your plan fulfills your goals—review it periodically, and adjust it if necessary.

also consider situations that may call for revisions to your will or other estate-planning documents.

• Marriage or divorce• A major change in your financial status• Birth or adoption of a child or grandchild• Death of a spouse or existing beneficiary• Death of an executor, trustee or other fiduciary• A move to a new state or province• A change in tax or estate planning laws

try to conduct a thorough review of your plan try to conduct a thorough review of your plan tevery five years—even if none of the above events have occurred in your life.

talk with your attorney or financial advisor. talk with your attorney or financial advisor. t be sure to look over the beneficiary designations for your retirement and investment accounts, along with your life insurance policies, to determine whether the beneficiary designations should be updated.

making a will is simple and puts you in charge of your estate—instead of the government—for the benefit of your family and favorite charities. i pray that as you either make or revisit your will, that you will consider remembering the children and youth we serve here in ministry with a gift to the foundation of the methodist Home.

Dr. Laudis H. (Rick) LanfordPresident/the foundation of the Methodist Home

of the South Georgia Conference, Inc.

In 1992, Cross Keys UMC established an Endowment Fund with the help of John Carroll, who then was the Executive Director. It was determined at its inception, that if Cross Keys ever closed, then the assets would go to The Methodist Home. It was the desire of the Endowment Committee to place the funds with The Foundation of The Methodist Home.

On Sunday morning, May 20th, the Endowment Committee of Cross Keys presented a check for $34,031.66 to The Foundation of The Methodist Home. The funds will go to the Educational Endowment Fund to be held in perpetuity so that only the interest will be used.

We currently have seven of our youth in College. The interest of this permanent endowment fund goes a long way in making sure their educational needs are met. We also have 33 youth in our Independent Living Program that these funds will help with their educational needs as well.

Harry Faircloth shared with me that he was glad the Cross Keys UMC had the foresight to have the funds come to The Methodist Home, though he never thought it would be in his lifetime. He also shared that it was a great joy to know that the money would be well spent to enable children and youth to attend levels of Higher Education.

If you or your local church desires to make a gift to one of the Foundation Permanent Endowment Funds, then please contact us at 478-751-1725 or [email protected]. Thank you Cross Keys UMC for helping to make a difference in the lives of the children and youth we serve in ministry here at The Methodist Home.
