ST JOHN’S, TOORAK

FIFTEENTH SUNDAY AFTER PENTECOST

28 August, 2016

WELCOME

A very warm welcome to St John’s, Toorak. This is a wonderful and historic parish, founded in 1859,

and is a vibrant part of the Toorak, and Melbourne community. This parish is part of the Anglican Church

of Australia and a member of the global Anglican Communion, which is comprised of some 80 million people. We worship God in the richness of the 1500

year old Anglican tradition, using The Prayer Book for Australia (1995) for all our services of worship. The

Parish of St John’s welcomes everyone to all services and events, regardless of age, gender, sexual

orientation, race or background.

Our service today can be found here in this printed booklet with hymns found in the red hymnal in each pew,

Together in Song. You are also very welcome to use the prayer books, the green Prayer Books for Australia, which

are also found in each pew. The scripture readings come from

The New Revised Standard Version of the Bible and follow The Australian Lectionary, which ‘sets’ the readings to be read each week, such that we with

Anglicans and other Christians around Australia and across the world are reading together the same parts of scripture, emphasizing our unity as members of the

one body of Christ.

If you’re visiting for the first time do please introduce yourself to a welcomer or member of the clergy, and fillout the brief information form found in the foyer so we

can stay in touch with you. 2

Welcome and God bless you.

The 8am service begins with the Introductory Rite, below. The 10am service begins with the processional hymn: 189

INTRODUCTORY RITE All stand

Blessed be God: Father, Son and Holy Spirit. Blessed be God’s kingdom, now and for ever. The Lord be with you. And also with you. Hymn at 8am 189 ‘Glory to our boundless God’ The Collect for Purity said together Almighty God, to whom all hearts are open, all desires known, and from whom no secrets are hidden: cleanse the thoughts of our hearts by the inspiration of your Holy Spirit, that we may perfectly love you, and worthily magnify your holy name, through Christ our Lord. Amen. The Great Commandments 'Hear, O Israel, the Lord our God, the Lord is one; you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind, and with all your strength.' Jesus said: 'This is the great and first commandment. And a second is like it: you shall love your neighbour as yourself.' Confession Let us confess our sins in penitence and faith, confident in God’s forgiveness. Merciful God, our maker and our judge, we have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed, and in what we have failed to do: we have not loved you with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbours as ourselves; we repent, 3

and are sorry for all our sins. Father, forgive us. Strengthen us to love and obey you in newness of life; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. Absolution Almighty God, who has promised forgiveness to all who turn to him in faith: pardon you and set you free from all your sins, strengthen you in all goodness and keep you in eternal life, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. Gloria in Excelsis said at 8am service and sung at 10am service to music found at hymn 757 Glory to God in the highest, and peace to God’s people on earth. Lord God, heavenly King, almighty God and Father, we worship you, we give you thanks, we praise you for your glory. Lord Jesus Christ, only Son of the Father, Lord God, Lamb of God, you take away the sin of the world: have mercy on us; you are seated at the right hand of the Father: receive our prayer. For you alone are the Holy One, you alone are the Lord, you alone are the Most High Jesus Christ, with the Holy Spirit, in the glory of God the Father. Amen. Collect for The Fifteenth Sunday after Pentecost

The celebrant prays the collect, after which all are seated The Children’s Address at 10am

All children are invited to join the clergy at the chancel step

THE LITURGY OF THE WORD The Lesson Jeremiah 2.4-13

(Read at 8am by S. Kincaid; and at 10am, by J. Griffith)

4 Hear the word of the Lord , O house of Jacob, and all the families of the house of Israel. 5 Thus says the Lord: 4

What wrong did your ancestors find in me that they went far from me, and went after worthless things, and became worthless themselves? 6 They did not say, ‘Where is the Lord who brought us up from the land of Egypt, who led us in the wilderness, in a land of deserts and pits, in a land of drought and deep darkness, in a land that no one passes through, where no one lives?’ 7 I brought you into a plentiful land to eat its fruits and its good things. But when you entered you defiled my land, and made my heritage an abomination. 8 The priests did not say, ‘Where is the Lord?’ Those who handle the law did not know me; the rulers transgressed against me; the prophets prophesied by Baal, and went after things that do not profit. 9 Therefore once more I accuse you, says the Lord, and I accuse your children’s children. 10 Cross to the coasts of Cyprus and look, send to Kedar and examine with care; see if there has ever been such a thing. 11 Has a nation changed its gods, even though they are no gods? But my people have changed their glory for something that does not profit. 12 Be appalled, O heavens, at this, be shocked, be utterly desolate, says the Lord, 13 for my people have committed two evils: they have forsaken me, the fountain of living water, and dug out cisterns for themselves, cracked cisterns that can hold no water.

Hear the word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. Psalter Psalm 81.1, 10-16 (said at 8am, sung by the choir at 10am) 1 O sing joyfully to God our strength:

shout in triumph to the God of Jacob.10 ‘I am the Lord your God,

who brought you up from the land of Egypt:open wide your mouth, and I will fill it.

11 ‘But my people would not listen to my voice:and Israel would have none of me.

12 ‘So I left them to the stubbornness of their hearts:to walk according to their own designs.

13 ‘If only my people would listen: 5

if Israel would but walk in my ways,14 ‘I would soon put down their enemies:

and turn my hand against their adversaries.15 ‘Those that hate the Lord would cringe before him:

and their punishment would last for ever.16 ‘But Israel I would feed with the finest wheat:

and satisfy you with honey from the rocks.’ Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit. As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.

The Epistle Hebrews 13.1-8, 15-16 (Read at 8am by T. Craddock; and at 10am B. Brown)

1 Let mutual love continue. 2 Do not neglect to show hospitality to strangers, for by doing that some have entertained angels without knowing it. 3 Remember those who are in prison, as though you were in prison with them; those who are being tortured, as though you yourselves were being tortured. 4 Let marriage be held in honour by all, and let the marriage bed be kept undefiled; for God will judge fornicators and adulterers. 5 Keep your lives free from the love of money, and be content with what you have; for he has said, ‘I will never leave you or forsake you.’ 6 So we can say with confidence, ‘The Lord is my helper; I will not be afraid. What can anyone do to me?’ 7 Remember your leaders, those who spoke the word of God to you; consider the outcome of their way of life, and imitate their faith. 8 Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and for ever. 15 Through him, then, let us continually offer a sacrifice of praise to God, that is, the fruit of lips that confess his name.16 Do not neglect to do good and to share what you have, for such sacrifices are pleasing to God.Hear the word of the Lord. Thanks be to God.

Gradual Hymn at 10am 566 ‘Jesus, if still the same thou art’

The Gospel Luke 14.1, 7-14 The Holy Gospel according to St Luke, Chapter 14, commencing at the first verse. Glory to you Lord Jesus Christ. 1 On one occasion when Jesus was going to the house of a leader of the Pharisees to eat a meal on the sabbath, they were watching him closely. 7 When he noticed how the guests chose the places of honour, he told them a parable. 8 ‘When you are invited by someone to a wedding banquet, do not sit down at the place of honour, in case someone more distinguished than you has been invited by your host; 9 and the host who invited both of you may come and say to you, “Give this person your place”, and then in disgrace you would start to take the lowest place. 10 But when you are invited, go and sit down at the lowest place, so that when your host comes, he may say to you, “Friend, move up higher”; then you will be honoured in the presence of all who sit at the table with you. 11 For all who exalt themselves will be humbled, and those who humble themselves will be exalted.’ 12 He said also to the one who had invited him, ‘When you give a luncheon or a dinner, do not invite your friends or your brothers or your relatives or rich neighbours, in case they may invite you in return, and you would be repaid. 13 But when you give a banquet, invite the poor, the crippled, the lame, and the blind. 14 And you will be blessed, because they cannot repay you, for you will be repaid at the resurrection of the righteous.’This is the Gospel of the Lord. Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ.

The Sermon The Curate, The Revd Matthew Connolly At the 8am service the Nicene Creed immediately follows the

sermon

Anthem at 10.00am Give almes of thy goods Christopher Tye (1505-72)

7

Nicene Creed said together, standing We believe in one God, the Father, the almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen. We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one being with the Father; through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven, was incarnate of the Holy Spirit and the virgin Mary and became truly human. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead and his kingdom will have no end. We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son is worshipped and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen. The Prayers of the People kneeling

(Intercessor at 8am B. Mouritz, and at 10am C. Beecher)

The Prayers end with the following Almighty God, you have promised to hear our prayers. Grant that what we have asked in faith we may by your grace receive, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Holy, holy, holy Lord, God of power and might, Heaven and earth are full of your glory. Hosanna in the highest. Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest.

The celebrant continues to pray the Great Thanksgiving Prayer until the following

…Let us proclaim the mystery of faith Christ has died. Christ is risen. Christ will come again. The celebrant continues to pray the Great Thanksgiving Prayer,

which ends with the following …Blessing and honour and glory and power are yours for ever and ever. Amen. The Lord’s Prayer Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, the power, and the glory for ever and ever. Amen. The Breaking of Bread We break this bread to share in the body of Christ. We who are many are one body, for we all share in the one bread. Agnus Dei said at 8am, sung at 10am to hymn 757Jesus, Lamb of God, have mercy on us. Jesus, bearer of our sins, have mercy on us. Jesus, redeemer of the world, grant us your peace.

About the Music Today

Give almes of thy goods  Christopher Tye [Tobit 4:7]Christopher Tye (c1505-pre 15 March 1573) was a direct contemporary of Tallis. Give almes of thy goods is a syllabic setting of an Offertory Sentence from the 1549 and 1552 Prayer Books. Tobit is part of the apocrypha which was published in the 1611 King James Bible, only being removed in the late 19th Century.  12

Give alms of thy substance; and when thou givest alms, let not thine eye be envious, neither turn thy face from any poor, and the face of God shall not be turned away from thee.”  KJV O sacrum convivium  Thomas Tallis “O Sacrum Convivium is a prose text honoring the Blessed Sacrament. It was included as an Magnificat antiphon in the vespers of the Office of Corpus Christi. The text of the Office is attributed with some probability to Saint Thomas Aquinas. Its sentiments express the profound affinity of the Eucharistic celebration, described as a banquet, to the Paschal mystery O sacred banquet at which Christ is consumed, the memory of his Passion is recalled, our souls are filled with grace, and the pledge of future glory is given to us."  wiki
