CAR SHOW John Tully

This month we had a fun meeting at Win Chevrolet followed by pizza, beer and one salad (Jennifer’s) at Shakey’s Pizza.

During the meeting, George Person, in charge of sponsor relations, introduced Win’s new general manager named Emil Moshabad. Emil wants Win to be one of the top Corvette dealers in the country and would like to suspend a Corvette from a crane again. He said he would like to see more club members (potential customers) at the monthly meetings.

Our upcoming December meeting will be important because: (1) we will elect club officers for the 2018 calendar year and (2) it is the opportunity to bring unwrapped toys to

be donated to “Cheer for Children” and/or bring donations for male Vets such as clothes, books, magazines, baseball hats, etc. Linda Tully will distribute donations.

Our “All GM Vech Classic” is on again. The show date is April 28, 2018 at Ruby’s Diner. Bonniegay, Linda Tully and myself reviewed 10 El Camino student applications for scholarship. Five students were chosen to receive our scholarship donation from our 2017 Car Show proceeds (A. Sanchez-Flores, J. Bondoc, J. Melgar, J. Ruelas and R. Gonzalez). All of these students are enrolled in automotive curricula. They have GPAs from 2.9 to 3.8 and have excellent recommendations from their current automotive instructors.

For our 2018, we will have tee shirts (Jerry Clement) for all participants who register early. Michael Lopez will be spinning the disks as he has for several years. Trophies will be hand made by Chuck Hammer. John Kern will E-mails past participants and car clubs. Sponsor solicitations will start in December. In addition, we encourage all TVS members to ask businesses that you frequent for support of our Car Show. There should be no embarrassment when you explain that all proceeds are going to help needful students.

Your Car Show committee is: Linda Tully, Linda Glaza, Jerry Clement, Chuck Hammer, Bonniegay Bacon, John and Cindy Noel, John Kern, Rob Weimer, John La Bella George Person Jr., Gary Gaffney, Dick Whitford, Santiago Chavez, and Don Popovich.

Watch the 62 RestorationIt's been some time since they have given an update on the 1962 "sinkhole" Corvette, but work has been well underway since February to bring it back to the condition it was in when it was donated to the Museum. Daniel Decker has been hard at work in the garage bay next to the AutoZone Maintenance Area, and Museum visitors have been able to catch a glimpse of the progress.

"We have all of the paint stripped, and we went in and started trimming the broken front fender for rebonding and fiberglassingback in," said Daniel. "The driver side door, hood and trunk lid scratches have all been repaired. We have received the new rear quarter panel section, so we have got the old one cut out, and the new portion fitted."

The old and new will come together before visitors' eyes on Friday, November 3.Work will continue on the car pretty much every week day from now until the car is complete and visitors to the Museum can observe the work in action daily, until 3pm.

The restored car is planned to be revealed on the fourth anniversary of the sinkhole, February 12, 2018.

Road & Track's Performance Car of the YearThis year was Road & Track magazine's fifth year for doing the "Performance Car of the Year" and their third year to call the NCM Motorsports Park the home track for the competition. While no model of Corvette was in the running this year, to say the

photography of those cars who were is stunning would be an understatement.

HISTORICAL REPORT

CRUISING THE OREGON COASTSEPTEMBER 16-25, 2017

Frank Tecca came up with another memorable car tour and this time he featured the Oregon coast. From The Vette Set and the North Coast Vettes clubs there were 9 cars and 17 people: Gary

Pebley, Jerry Clement, John LaBella, Linda & John Tully, Robin & Ken Morelock, Linda & Norm Pick, Jeanette & Rob Weimer, Toni & Dick Whiitford, Gloria & Frank Tecca, and Sharon & Pat Cowley.

Bakersfield (9/16). Frank’s plan was to have the first night’s stop in Bakersfield and go to Buck Owen’s Crystal Palace for dinner and music. Because of a corporate event at the Palace, were unable to go there so we dined at the Wool Grower’s Restaurant, one of three Basque restaurants in Bakersfield. In addition to the entre, the dinner included bread, vegetable soup, beans, salsa, tomato salad, green salad, pickled tongue, vegetable of the day, French fries and spaghetti.

Sacramento (9/17). On our way to the state’s capital, we stopped for lunch in Merced at an Italian restaurant (not a big surprise given the heritage of our leader, Frank). Returning to our cars, we stopped to look at the tile mural that fascinated us two years earlier. Retired dentist, Jerry, found the tile with a molar, Robin found one with a robin, and the group discovered two Corvette tiles.

We had

Yreka (9/18). Before we reached this northern California town, Frank’s agenda simply had the word “surprise.” Actually, Frank had two surprises that day with the first being SCCAThunderhill Raceway Park. ”This is a motorsports complex located located 7 miles West of Willows, CA. It was motorcycles only on the day of our visit. This raceway has the venue for the longest automobile race in the United States, the 25 Hours of Thunderhill, held annually during the first weekend in December.”

The second surprise was the “Sundial Bridge at Turtle Bay that crosses the Sacramento River in the heart of Redding, California. Opened July 4, 2004, the bridge links the north and south campuses of Turtle Bay Exploration Park and serves as a new downtown entrance for Redding’s extensive Sacramento River Trail system.” This predates Dublin’s Samuel Becket Bridge which has a similar design in the form of a harp.

Sundial BridgePark Entrance

After leaving the park we had a scenic ride to our motel in Yreka..

Grants Pass OR (9/19). On our journey to our motel, Frank planned lunch and white water rafting on the Rogue River. Before reaching the river we had another scenic drive.

10

We hadGe

11

Newport, OR (9/20). On our journey to Newport, Frank planned to see Oregon Dunes, Haceta Lighthouse, Cape Perpetua, and Oregon Beach. On the way, he showed us a few bridges before lunch at Mo’s.

When we reached our rafting destination, we experienced cool weather with sprinkles. Typically this time of year the weather is much warmer and any splashes of cool water while rafting would be a welcoming refreshment. Not the case the day we were there. We were given rafting apparel. Some repelled water and others, including mine, seemed to welcome and absorb it. The degree of difficulty selected for the group had a risk factor similar to that of Disneyland’s Autopia, but on a cold damp day, it was all most of us wanted to experience. That day, the knight in shining armor was John LaBella who had the foresight to bring a bottle of Jeremiah Weed for fortification.

We had

12

A great lunch at Mo’s….the Oyster stew was the best.

Haceta Lighthouse

The Hallmark Resort in Newport, OR where every room had a view of the Pacific and a fireplace

Astoria, OR (9/21). Frank planned lunch at the Blue Herron French Cheese (fromage?) Company in Tillamook followed by ice cream at the farmer owned Tillamook County Creamery.

Western Aerospace & Automobile Museum

13

In Astoria, we went to the Maritime Museum. Later went to dinner near the Columbia River where we watched a ship pass under the 2 mile long bridge while we waited to be seated.

Hood River, OR (9/22). We drove through a forest, toured the Mt. Saint Helen’s Visitor Center before having lunch at America’s Diner. Then we motored off to the Columbia River Gorge sternwheeler for a dinner cruise. Joining us were Frank and Gloria’s daughter, Laurey, and their son-in-law, David. Making sure Laurey & David didn’t miss the boat, the Teccasmissed the group photo before we boarded.

Klamath Falls, OR (9/23). Next on the agenda was a visit to the Western Aerospace & Automobile Museum in Hood River, OR. This is a collection of cars paired with planes of the same vintage. Our docent was a lady pilot who said the car collection keeps the doors open.

Truckee, CA (9/24). We stopped to see Lava Beds National Monument. This “is a land of turmoil, both geological and historical. Over the last half-million years, volcanic eruptions on the Medicine Lake shield volcano have created a rugged landscape dotted with diverse volcanic features.” It has “more than 700 caves, Native American rock art sites, historic battlefields and campsites.”

We had

14

Frank found a rustic rest stop in Loyalton, CA called the Golden West Saloon, which was rated the #1 of 2 restaurants in town. After a pit stop, we were back in the cars headed for Truckee.

Lone Pine, CA (9/25). Before we left Truckee for Lone Pine, Frank had a driver’s meeting in the breakfast area. The Best Western Frontier hotel manager wanted a group photo in front of the building. After seeing the photo, most of the cars were in the entrance, tucked behind shrubs.

Cave InteriorSharon & Jerry John having a gopher moment

On the way to Lone Pine we stopped at the Virginia Creek Settlement in Bridgeport, CA. It was said that they have the best pizza in the area. That may be true, but I’ll bet that Tommy Lasorda didn’t drive from LA to get a slice.

For appreciation of another fun-filled, well-planned adventure, the group took Frank and Gloria out to dinner. Thanks for the memories!
