GEARHEAD GAZZETTE 2012

When the bench racing starts, and it always does when 2 or more of us gearheads get together, after the tall tales and half truths on how fast our car will run are done, if you listen closely, you will usually hear a wealth of knowledge coming from the gearheads….especially those with some gray in their hair. Like it or not, age equals experience in most cases. I say most cases as some of the “graybeards” have been around and like their cars, but can’t or don’t want to work on them. When you’re listening to other gearheads talk, especially those that “know their stuff:”, there are a lot of “learning's’ that we can get. Personally I listen with great interest as I learned a long time ago, that contrary to my own belief, I have a lot to learn…always will. I also learned from my college trig professor, that you become a better person if you learn something new everyday. It doesn’t have to be some BIG earth shattering fact or lesson. It’s the little things that can pay off the most for us in life. It’s kind of like a baseball team. The team that always tries to hit the home run, most times will lose the game. The team that get the singles and doubles moves the runner around the bases and score the run. Same in golf. Drive for show but putt for the dough. Picking up those “little learning's” is very easy…just listen. It’s that simple. All of gearheads have had or still have someone(s) (is that a word?) that have influenced us in this car hobby we love. If you have more than one., count yourself lucky. I count my self lucky as my dad taught me directly and indirectly a lot of tricks and ways to fix the mechanical beasts I love so much. I too have other influences in my life, due to a lot of good

fortune and being lucky and in the right place at the right time. I have watched friends do things with cars that people said couldn’t be done. There is no school that can teach you that…none. Schools will give you basic tools to get started, but working around a skilled Gearhead is the best learning you can ever get. Then you have our “Hot Rod Hero’s. Whether its drag racing, NASCAR, INDY Car etc., there are those people we hold in the highest regard and have on a pedestal. These are the folks that we want to be around and if you’re like me, would love to work in their shop next to them for a year for free just to learn. Problem is, we are losing our Hot Rod Hero’s at a much more rapid rate these days. Age does that unfortunately, as well as other causes. If you have the opportunity to meet your Hot Rod Hero…do it. Be respectful but do it! You may never get the chance again. What you gain from that meeting, as short as it may be, can not be bought anywhere for any amount. One of our Hot Rod Hero’s is pretty sick folks. As I have written about earlier this year, Norm Grabowski got stricken with cancer. Norm choose a path for treatment of his cancer, but the shit is growing faster than can be treated. Norm has been placed in Hospice care now. Please keep Norm in your thoughts and prayers these days. Keep his friends too in your thoughts and prayers as they are hurting too. I read a lot about Norm and his antic’s over the years. I got to meet him in Nashville at the GOODGUYS show a few years back. I’m glad I did. Never laughed so hard. “Good to meet ya Norm…my name is Jim”

“Just like that, a cruise nite is gone!”

6 GEARHEAD GAZZETTE 2012

Say it ain’t so!! But it is. The automobile

bench seat is breathing it’s last breath in

the 2013 Chevrolet Impala. When this car

is gone…the car bench seat as many of us

“graybeards” know it and grew up with it, is

gone for good. Bucket seats have

completely taken over. Todays car buyers

like the more expensive and sportier look

that the bucket seat projects and the

convenience of the center console for all of

todays toys, like cell phones, gps units,

ipods and more. For a lot of us, there is a

certain nostalgia for bench seats, like being

able to “snuggle” up with your date at a

drive-in movie or just cruising around with

your best girl next to you, instead of on the

other side of the car. R.I.P old friend….

We want to give a little recognition to a friend of

ours. Dave Ferguson Has been putting out the

MIDDLE TENNESSEE “Show & Shine” weekly

newsletter for some time now. Dave does a

great job keeping all of his readers up to date

on a lot of shows and cruises that happen in

and around Nashville Tn. You can get the info

on the FACEBOOK page or by sending Dave

an email at [email protected].

NAME CHANGE ALERT!!

For everyone who lives in the Middle

Tennessee area and for everyone who knows

it as the TENNESSEE STATE

FAIRGROUNDS, you’re going to have to get

used to the new name. The powers that be,

have decided to re-name the Tennessee State

Fairgrounds as the Nashville Expo Center. The

thinking is that this better reflects what in fact

the facility really gets used for. Don’t worry, all

your favorite events will still be held here, just

remember only the name has changed to

make the “big boys” happy. Wonder who got

the contract for all the new signs and

stationary…always follow the money folks…

Congrats to our good friend and Gazzette Contributing Photojournalist, Marty Crain. His very own Woody known lovingly as the “leaky tiki”, made the cover of the current issue of Cruisin Style magazine. Lookin’ Good Marty!!! We know you have a lot of hard work and hard wood in this one.

VOLUNTEER’s NEEDED for the 9th Annual

Kris Kringle Car Show. They will be taping

off/laying out the show floor at the Williamson Co.

Ag. Bldg. on Thursday Nov. 1st at approx. noon.

The set-up day for cars coming in, is on Friday

Nov. 2nd from 10AM-8PM. The show hours are

Sat from 9-6 and Sunday from 12-4. They have

lots of "opportunities" for you to help when you

are available. Even as little as watching over the

cars during show hours is a BIG help. Please let

them know if you can help them out during any of

these days/times. Tom Akers will be getting with

you as time draws nearer for exact times. If

you or anyone you know can help, Please

contact Tom at 615-478-5032.

As always, they really appreciate your willingness

to help and your support of the show. They have

some great cars lined up and with your help it will

be another AWESOME show!!!

If you live anywhere in

the Mid-South area, or even if

you don’t, you shouldn’t miss this event. The

Midnight Rodders host this “driving event”

every year and it grows every year too. They

have a new route lined up for 2012 that we’re

sure you’re going to enjoy with your cool

cruiser. Our guess is you’ll see Marty Crain on

point in his “leaky tiki” Ford Woody, setting the

pace for the drive.

HOT RODDERS DON’T MISS THIS!

DON’T KEEP IT A SECRET

This show has to be one of the BEST KEPT

secret’s around Nashville!! 38 years they have

been hosting the event, and doing a great job

we may add!! Ask a lot of the Pre-48 hot

rodders if they have heard or been to this show

and you’ll probably hear, “what are you talking

about?” If you’re driving or you just plain like

any Pre-1948 hot rod, then check out the event

info on this show elsewhere in this issue. You’ll

be glad you did after a fun weekend

Larry Larson pulled out another win at HOT

ROD Magazine’s Drag Week 2012.

He pulled out a 6.94 @ 208.97 on Day five at

Tulsa to win the whole deal…AGAIN!! As

someone else said, but we’ll agree.. Larry is a

professional winner! For full coverage check

” Kruisin’ in K-town! Like an old friend that you see every once in a while, or just once a year, the NSRA Street Rod Nationals South Plus comes to visit east Tennessee in the Spring. This year marked the 38th year for this event, so NSRA and the host club ( THANK YOU!) make everything smooth and seamless for all the participants. The show location in Knoxville’s Chillhowee Park is a wonderful place to stage this event. Plenty of shade, blacktop roads and acres of grass to park all those cool cars and trucks on. Throw in Womans World, all the vendors, a big swap meet and it’s a time honored recipe for success. Check out just a few of the too cool cars that were there in 2012.

Cool cars and music just go

together…don’t they? The “Cruzin

for the Music Car Show” proved

that old saying is still very true. On

a very chilly (cold!!) and

breezy(down right windy!!) day,

Over 180 cars, trucks and other

motorized machines showed up to

support this event. Hat’s off to

Tabitha & Barbara for making this

show go smooth on its maiden

voyage. Mark you show calendar

HOT RODDING IN THE MID-SOUTH Words & Picture’s by Ed Woodard

Assisted by Hannah Woodard

I guess it was about 1967, just about the time that

the Mid-South Street Rod Roundup was moved to

Gatlinburg because Pigeon Forge was not big

enough to handle the attendees. Street rodding was

really starting to become an entity of its own. Street

rods were showing up everywhere. The Gatlinburg

location just fit the bill, with its neat gift shops, good

restaurants & great motels.

The Street Rod Roundup was just one weekend a

year but preparation at home getting cars ready for

the annual trip, was a real task. The distance was

about a 500 mile round trip for the middle

Tennessee sponsors, so vehicles had to be road

worthy. Well at least the ones driven. Many were

trailered or towed home after malfunctions.

By this time we had added a show area and a

decent swap meet but we had no idea how big this

event was going to get.

The individual stories at home are really something

to write about, like the time one our street rod pals

dropped off his wife at Shoney’s where she worked.

Everything normal, until some kid yelled at him to

get on it, which he did, but not before overlooking

the newly installed speed bump. Yep, tore loose the

front end and had to be put on the hook to get

home.

This roadster was a slick T-roadster, with turtle

deck, Olds engine, LaSalle gear box, a pretty neat

ride. Open cars are great, but a Nashville to

Memphis run one summer convinced him to get a

sedan which sets us up for some really entertaining

stories.

I think it was about 1969, that Jimmy started on that

steel bodied 34 sedan, which was calling out to be

chopped…now lets see where did I leave those

“How to Chop your Sedan” books. Well the car got

whacked & looked pretty wicked especially with a

chromed engine block & a highly polished 671

blower. Car was painted a pearl white with lavender

lace. It even made a car annual publication. A little

note about the startup procedure that should be

noted, after pulling the car around the block a

couple of times, back in the garage, Jimmy was

turning over the engine, with Richard observing, but

there was not any oil pressure. Richard said a

minute or so later that he was standing in his oil

pressure. Forgot to put the plugs back in the back of

the block! Now that’s early times hot rodding for

sure!

With the blower working fine Jimmy was off to

Memphis for the 1971 Nats, where we entered the

poker run. With 5 of us in the car, we took off for

the first card pickup and I remember it well. As we

approached a stop light just before going under the

main runway at the Memphis airport, we got

challenged by some kid in a Camaro. Bad

decision, as Jimmy blasted off after cutting a light

like a pro. You cannot imagine how a blower

screams in a tunnel at 7000 rpm. No contest, but

everybody on board heard Richard say, I never

turned my blower on like that, must have said that

20 times. It wasn’t without problems as we twisted

a pulley in the process….even ended up with a bad

poker hand. Got a picture of repairing the pulley in

that annual too!

That car received a color change a year or so later

as did the interior. They didn’t change the material

just dyed the fabric. Can you imaging how many

bottles of dye that took, surpassed only by the

number of clothes ruined when dye came off.

Admirers of the car often wondered why they

covered a good looking black interior with beach

towels. Never did hear the answer!

Now you must remember these were the early

days of hot rodding & there were few “How To”

books. If you want to see if my friend Jimmy

learned anything from all this just be watching for

his latest “34” Ford which might be finished next

year. It will knock your socks off, for sure!!!!

Almost forgot the history lesson. Out on the left

coast about 1970, the first Pismo Beach run was

being held and up in Peoria the first NSRA Street

Rod Nationals were being held and in Gatlinburg

Tennessee the sixth annual Mid-South Street Rod

Roundup was being held.

16

HOT RODDING IN THE MID-SOUTH cont. Is it any wonder, why on any weekend this area

has weekend meets that draw thousands of cars. I

remember one Friday night a year or so ago

Hendersonville had 400 cars & Murfreesboro had

900 cars, no trophies, no awards, just people

having fun with their rides. That is a typical

weekend in the Nashville & surrounding area. Oh

to be young again !!!

The wheezers, I almost forgot that story. I believe it

was 1968 at the Gatlinburg run that my friend

Richard Jones was awakened by a 6-71 blower

doing its thing in the cool morning mountain air.

That was it! SOLD, got to have one he said. Seems

that, the blower that was on Nathan Robinsons T-

roadster with a big block Chevrolet engine was

making sweet music. Nathan and his wife Ginger

are lifelong friends from Cherokee NC and still

have a roadster. Anytime you are in Cherokee NC

look for the El Camino motel that he built.

Richard was sold on the blower, came back to

Nashville found one, configured the engine for the

6-71 & came back in 1969 with his own wheezer!

Richard has built several roadsters with blowers

including his pictured here.

Richard’s Roadster before the blower came along

All these old tales about my friends can be

matched with similar stories by each person

reading this today. Nothing new here, we have all

been there and experienced hot rodding tales. Sort

of reminds me of a line one of my friends once told

me about how much it would cost to build my

Buick. He said if I had told you what I really thought

it would cost you would not have started the

project. But when you think about it, especially

after it is completed, the real fun is in the

construction. Whether you are securing parts or

pulling the wrenches, this is the real fun part.

That old ’30 Buick took 13 years to complete and

each day was worth the headaches. Sometimes

things were held up because of parts and

sometimes because the budget was empty, still we

pushed on. Then one day, there it was, finished.

Wow, 13 years, is that all it took.

Why I remember driving it up to Red Boiling

Springs TN when I didn’t have a back seat in it and

my buddy Pat Castle had to sit on the floor and

Richard & I sat on the original Buick front seat with

an old flag covering the seat holes. Another time

Pat & I took my unfinished Buick, with no interior,

no bumpers and the Paxton taped off to the

Franklin KY meet. Of course Pat’s roadster was

finished & acted as a decoy getting most of the

eyeballs. You see you can still have fun even with

an unfinished car.

That’s what it’s really about…having fun with your

friends and your cars.

Speaking of fun, get ready for more in the next

issue.

Richards Roadster with the 6-71 blower on it...He’s happy now!

Being located in the Middle Tennessee area, we have the good fortune of having RTM Productions in “our neighborhood” as some would say. Accordingly, some of the vehicles featured on the various RTM shows and POWERBLOCK TV come from the “local gearheads”. Such is the case with this beautiful Willys of Richard “Beaver” Hellis of Franklin TN. Owner built, you have to see this one in person to take in all the great details and the effect of the paint in the sun, to truly appreciate it. You’ve seen it on TV, but here are some shot’s, courtesy of RTM Productions and Steve Longacre, Art Director for POWERBLOCK Magazine. While the cars are being filmed, they are also being photographed by Steve for use in the on-line POWERBLOCK Magazine (www.powerblocktv.com/magazine/) .

Here’s a few shots that you haven’t seen yet, that were taken “BEHIND THE SCENE”….

Words by Jimmy B / Pic’s by Steve Longacre Art Director – POWERBLOCK Magazine / RTM Productions

Beavers Willys just looks so Evil, Wicked, Mean & Nasty When you’re car or truck is on POWERBLOCK, you have to

take your buddy with you right???…RIGHT!! Bill Johnson is

sharing Courtney with Beaver or is it the other way around?

Let’s say they’re both enjoying being with Courtney…oh yea!

Thursday Nite Kick Off Party

The GOODGUYS Road Show rolled into Nashville again this year, bringing with them all the fun stuff the “hot rodders” like to do. Since the show didn’t actually open until Friday morning, they decided to have a “little” get together over at ADVANCED PLATING, just “around the corner” from the show site at LP field. Kind of warm things up for the weekend and help Steve Tracy and the crew at Advanced Plating celebrate 50 years of keeping hot rodders in “chrome”. If you missed it here are some shots of the cool rides that were in attendance. Plan on being here next year, food, drink, music and fun for everyone!!!!

When you say Nashville Tennessee what comes to mind? The Grand Ole’ Opry, The Ryman, Tootsie’s, Music Row?? You would be correct on all those, but in the month May, you have to add in the sweet music of thousands of hot rods, muscle cars and cool customs too! Just like the MASSIVE Pipe Organ in the Symphony Hall, all those exhaust pipes were belting out killer tunes in the key of high horsepower. The event is held along side the Cumberland River at LP field. This great site has shade, plenty of room for everyone, a great “track area” for the autocross event, swap meet and car corral. This year, thanks to the State doing road construction on the main interstate for access to the show site, Goodguys had to come up with a plan to move a lot of people and cars in a short time. Job well done guys!! If you’ve never been to this Goodguys Road Show stop, put it on your 2013 calendar. Sweet sounds of horsepower during the day and plenty to see and do at nite in Music City USA!

WANTED: My name is Chris Woodside from Cincinnati, Ohio. For those who have been around Middle Tennessee

long enough, you may know my father Bob "Woody" Woodside who is very active with the AACA, Pontiacs of TN, Buick

& Cadillac Club. Long story short, my wife, son and I have permanently relocated to TN to be with my Father and my

handicapped Uncle to be able to spend more time with them both and ideally enjoy your warmer climate to partake in

some of the great car shows you have in and around the Middle TN area. In the last 30 days or so we have been

looking for a home that would be great for our varied handicap & car needs-------but not really having much luck frankly.

It occurred to me who else might know of a great home with land or garage space etc. for a fellow-car guy than those

who are into old cars too! That said, if by chance you happen to be aware of a home or land for sale that would be great

for "car people" in Williamson County, I would greatly appreciate any leads you might refer our way. We're fairly sure

we'd like to have a minimum of 2 acres---------not to exceed 5 acres that will perk for a 5br or 6br home (crazy I know).

Mostly level would be great for wheel chair issues etc. Again, please forgive any nuisance of this e-mail and I thank you

in advance for your time/attention to this request. I've attached a few photos of my Batmobile Replica that I hope you'll

get to see sometime soon in person! Thanks much. Chris A. Woodside 615.979.3058 (issue #7)

Finish Line….

www.gearheadgazzette.com

Life's journey is not to arrive at the grave safely, in a well preserved body, but rather to skid in sideways, totally worn out, shouting "...Holy Crap... what a ride!!!"

.

As fall has arrived and the temps outside are get cooler & cooler, you may want to catch up on your “HOT

ROD Themed” movie watching. Here’s some of the good and not so good from years gone by. One thing is

for sure, they’re gonna have some great cars in them…even of the flick is a “B” or “C” or “D”ud! How many

have you seen already. Now keep the noise down, pass the popcorn and Junior Mints folks!
