“ Ya Gotta know where to Go….The FUN Starts Here….”

Jimmy B.“the fun starts here”….4 GEARHEAD GAZZETTE 2013

“The BEST Award of the day….”

Ok…we’re moving through the 2013 car show - cruise-in season and it’s time for a reality check for some of us. NOTE please that I said some of us.

A few years back, Kirk Jones, Editor of the GOOGUYS GAZETTE did an editorial that was nothingbut this importantdocument. At least I think it’simportant and I believe a lot moreof you feel the same.

Kirk also said to feel free and useit as necessary.

Well in my humble opinion, it’snecessary again.

There are folksout there in car show land, that have been whining and complaining that someone else got the $5.00 or $10.00 trophy, that they think they should have got, because they know their car or truckis SO MUCH better. Whenyou ask them how do they know….they just do because they know and their car or truck is so much nicer than the car or truck that got the award.

I know I may alieninant some readers and get some “hate” e-mail, but here goes….GET OVER IT!!!

The local summer shows in your part of the country, and we all have them, are in my opinion, first and foremost in most

cases a fund raising event for some cause or a club activity.

We go to them to show off our ride, support the effort raising money, and to see old friends and maybe if you’re lucky, meet some new gearhead friends.

Folks, this hobby of of ours is first and and foremost

about people, notthe cars or trucks.Elsewhere in this issue is a greenblock with a quote from the Frankton Roadster Club in New Zealand. Read it 2 or 3 times and let it soak in.

To me, the BEST AWARD anyone of

us Gearheads can get, is a “THUMBS UP” from someone checking us out when we are driving our ride, or at a cruise in or

car show. That says it all in a quiet approval.

Don’t mis-read me here. I am no different than all of you. Recognition of our efforts is great. Getting it is great. Just don’t get carried away if you don’t get the $5.00 award.Enjoy the people you are

with and the ones you meet for the first time.

I’ll bet you that you get at least one “THUMBS UP” on your way home…The BEST AWARD of the day…YES!!!

Congrats to Tim Slone of

Columbia TN and Kris Henderson

of Thompsons Station TN for

getting their cool rides featured in

the October 2013 issue of HOT

ROD Magazine. That’s Tim’s

SATURN ION Coupe and Kris’s

‘59 Jag waiting to make a pass at

the HOT ROD CHALLENGE run

in conjunction with the ECTA at

Wilmington OH. Kris sqeeked a

200MPH run wit the tires needing

more traction and gremlins kept

Tim to 193 MPH. Both cars have

gone faster and with a little more

tweaking they will be putting up

action short.

And remember to tell em’ ya saw it in the GEARHEAD GAZZETTE cause THE FUN STARTS HERE!!

For those of you curious about my Health situation............. here is where I am.

I am now in Stage 5 Kidney Failure or End Stage Renal Failure. Thursday a week ago, I went

through the program at Vanderbilt to be evaluated for a Kidney Transplant.

I am not yet accepted into the Transplant Program, and here's why:

To continue on, I must undergo a Heart Cath Test.......... The Dye used in this test would finish off

my kidneys and force me in to Dialysis. This would be extremely hard for me to do and continue to do

the type of work I have been doing for the past several years. Then the wait for a Cadaver Donor can

be 3 to 5 years. A Cadaver Kidney is expected to extend my life about 10 years.

I can come up with a "Living Donor" and be scheduled for surgery, then my life expectancy could be

up to 30 years!

To be tested, you can go to: http://www.vanderbilthealth.com/transplant/29111

There will be absolutely no cost to you. My insurance covers all costs. They will even fly someone

here (Hotel, food, etc.) if necessary.

I feel extremely fatigued all the time (I can't do strenuous work) and I feel nauseated all the time.

Food and Drinks don't even taste right.

The only bright thing for me right now is my work. I can get into a vehicle right now and Drive for

hours and I do fine. I love to travel and not being on Dialysis, I can continue to do that. I am thankful

to Darrell Waltrip Automotive Group, Carpenter Bus Sales, Mid Ten Ford, and Dixie Motors for

continuing to call on me to help them.

I also love being at home with my wife, pets and family. And I love attending Car Shows with my

friends.

If I come up with a Donor, I can continue to do all this.

Thanks for reading,

Stan

N.C. man told to stop taking money to restore cars

RALEIGH, N.C. — State officials are trying to put the brakes on a North Carolina man who they say

took more than $2 million from people all over the world to restore Pontiac Trans Ams but did not

deliver the cars or return the customers’ money.

Attorney General Roy Cooper said Monday that a judge issued a temporary restraining order

against Robert Allen McElreath, whose businesses were listed at addresses in Black Mountain and

Fairview. The order issued last week tells McElreath to stop taking orders and advance deposits for

automobile restoration in North Carolina.

“Promising consumers a custom car, taking their money and then leaving them high and dry is no

way to do business,” Cooper said in a news release. “We want to stop bandits from making off with

people’s money.”

Among McElreath’s business names is Build-A-Bandit, a reference to the 1977 movie “Smokey and

the Bandit,” which featured the Trans Am. Other business names include Pick a Pony, Pontiac Pros,

Common Man Classic Hot Rods and Discount Automotive Classic Reconstruction, Cooper said.

Since June 2012, the Attorney General’s Office has received 52 written complaints from people from

as far away as Australia who signed contracts with McElreath for automobile restoration but never

got what they were promised, Cooper said. In addition, 26 warrants have been issued against

McElreath for obtaining property by false pretenses.

Law enforcement officers believe McElreath has left the state, Cooper said, and the AP didn’t find

contact information for him.

The complaint filed by Cooper’s office lists Erica Kampert as an associate, and consumers also

name her in their complaints. In a phone interview with the Associated Press, Kampert said she was

unaware of the TRO and doesn’t know where McElreath is.

Kampert said she did paperwork for McElreath, working as his secretary for a while. “Since I don’t

know what you’re talking about, it’s best I not to talk to you,” she said before hanging up.

The complaint filed by the Attorney General’s Office said McElreath advertised “Smokey and the

Bandit” cars on Internet auction sites. Bidders who lost got a call from McElreath offering them a car

at a discounted price, Cooper said.

Consumers signed a contract and wired thousands of dollars before work began, the complaint said.

Consumers said they never got their cars and couldn’t get their money back.

Wake County Superior Court Judge Howard Manning ordered McElreath to appear in court June 10.

He did not appear at the hearing last week when the temporary restraining order was issued

Here at the GEARHEAD GAZZETTE, we like to

highlight hot rodding folks whenever we can.

We have a hot rod magazine writer right here in

the Middle Tennessee area that deserves some

recognition. Some of you may know of him, if you

are into the rat rod scene and read RAT ROD

magazine on a regular basis.

He writes a monthly column for RAT ROD

magazine called Tommy’s Toolbox.

He is….drum roll please….Tommy Ring!

Tommy calls Thompsons Station TN home. He is

tucked away on a beautiful country road. Pull into

his place…head around back and BAM…there is

it…his shop full of rats rods!!

Tommy doesn’t just write about them, he owns

and drives them too!

We like reading your stuff Tommy! Keep up the

great work!!

Come on...admit it…when you see a cool sticker

or decal you know you want to get one and

usually do!

We like them too. We especially like the ones

from the late 50’s –early 60’s that showed the

cool places you went on vacation or for a “road

trip”. You know the ones we’re talking about, you

see them on the back windows, quarter windows

and especially on those cool of station wagons.

Guess what? You can get some of those cool

stickers again.

John Bell of BELL’S ART GARAGE

(www.johnbellstudio.com) is producing these

decals/stickers again.

John sent us a few samples and we have to tell

you that these are very cool!!

High quality, period correct, but with a little hot

rodding flare on some of them and others with

that period correct look that they have nailed!

These decals are die-cut @ 4-1/2 Inches big.

The other great thing besides the design and

quality, is the GREAT PRICE they are offered

at!!!

Here’s a few examples. Click on the websites

listed here to check out all of them and to get

some for yourself…we are!!

Nashville’s Frist Center Shows Off Art Deco Cars

When Nashville’s main post office opened in 1934, New Deal federal government programs were on the rise and the architectural style of federal buildings was stern and modernist. It was one of those big stately, solid buildings suggestive of the federal government’s power; tough-looking stone eagles stood sentinel on its facade. The Postal Service moved out of the building several years ago, and it became home to the Frist Center for the Visual Arts. On June 14, the former post office lobbies and halls will be the site of a show of collectible automobiles. The exhibition of 18 cars and two motorcycles is called “Sensuous Steel: Art Deco Automobiles,” and runs through Sept. 15.The show was organized by Ken Gross, guest curator and former director of the Petersen Automotive Museum in Los Angeles.“This is a dream show for me,” Mr. Gross said. “These are my favorite cars of all.”He cited the Stout Scarab, a creation of William Stout, an airline pioneer. The car’s minivanlike body was decorated with a whiskery grille pattern.Mr. Gross said the size and layout of the Frist Center made it possible to display cars two and three per room, giving each type of car tighter focus.According to Thomas Mellins, a historian, in his essay in the show catalog, the term Art Deco did not enter into widespread use until 1968, with the publication of the book, ”Art Deco of the 20s and 30s,” by Bevis Hillier, a historian. Mr. Mellins said that a major show at the Minneapolis Institute of Arts popularized the term.

“It is not easy to define Art Deco,” Mr. Gross said. “But most of us recognize it.”The show’s standouts include Frank Lloyd Wright’s 1929 Cord L-29 Cabriolet. This is not the more familiar, coffin-hooded Cord look of the 1930s, but an earlier one. Mr. Wright may have been the one who painted the car its current burnt orange color. Also on display is a 1937 Delahaye 135 MS Roadster by Figoni and Falaschi, with an interior by the leather maker Hermès. In its day, the car was billed as “a Paris gown on wheels.” The one-of-a-kind 1934 Edsel Ford Model 40 Special Speedster, designed by E.T. Gregorie of Lincoln Zephyr and Continental fame, is a true gentleman’s racer. The show also features a 1934 Pierce-Arrow Silver Arrow Sedan designed by Phillip Wright for the Chicago Century of Progress Exposition of 1933 and 1934.The show is accompanied by a catalog with moody and expressive photos of the cars by Peter Harholdt and essays about them by Mr. Gross and Mr. Mellins.Lane Motor Museum, located just across town, loaned the show one of its streamlined Czech Tatra 97s, of which it has nearly two dozen. The Lane and the Frist will offer reciprocal admission discounts during the run of the show. Either collection is worth an auto aficionado’s trip to Nashville. The Frist does not have its own collection. It is the type of art institution seen more often in Europe, serving as a venue for traveling or locally originated shows. With the Postal Service likely to have more buildings to dispose of in the future, the Frist Center could serve as a model for the new roles the vacated buildings could play in the urban landscape.

On seventy beautiful, snow dusted acres, surrounded by rolling hills,we found this stunning Bumpside, fresh from the barn

While beauty is known for being in the eye of the beholder, there are tenets or common properties everything beautiful contains. As physicians, scientists, artists and engineers have studied the human body, they found a common ratio between body parts that if adhered to, predictably dictated that an admirer would sense feelings of attraction and who expressed the subject as attractive or beautiful. This ratio is referred to as the Golden Section or Divine Ratio. It’s based on 5, derivatives of 5 and Phi or 1.618. For centuries scientists have been studying the math that leads to these ideal ratios or proportions and how to use them in design. Here’s how it works: if you take the average human body and measure the distance between the navel and the foot, then consider that measurement as “1”, the height of the average human is equal to 1.618 of that measurement. This Divine Ratio appears throughout the human body and in nature. It’s commonly referred to as “ideal” proportions. When the most beautiful people are measured, it has been shown they have ideal proportions. Well, buried in a holler in Warren County Tennessee, we found a ‘67 F100 with a Divine Ratio… fresh out of the barn. Driving down to Mike’s farm from Nashville was unusual this morning as we don’t get much of the white stuff here in middle Tennessee. It snowed lightly on us all the way down and continued most of the day. The snow and his beautiful farm provided us a rare back drop for this photo opp. On arrival, Mike greeted me with a huge country handshake and a warm southern welcome on this cold February morning.

Starting with the ‘67 model year, Ford released its redesigned truck line with all new proportions. This new design incorporated a distinctive convex body line that has since become known as the bump in “Bumpside.” This design was replaced in ’73 with a concave body line many didn’t consider as attractive. These days, most collectors and builders seem to prefer the Bumpside as a better canvas to start with when building a new ride. While Mike owns several Blue Oval treasures he prefers the distinctive styling found on the Bumpside models.

Some purists might disagree with the proportions Mike carved out of this short bed and for hacking up a perfectly good cab. While this diversity of opinion is what makes the car hobby so much fun, it’s hard not to love the vision, artistry, and effort Mike put into this old girl to get her to these proportions. Not to worry though, because between 1967 and 1972, the production run for the Bumpsides, Ford built over two million of these trucks. There are plenty more to play with.

Mike definitely took the long hard road to bring this beast to life. As the coloring might lead you to believe, this truck is actually several as Mike chose the best parts from his yard art treasure chest.

When looking at the build quality in this truck, you might be inclined to think this truck was built with a checkbook by a professional shop. That’s not Mike, he did all of it himself, at home, in the barn.

Looking around Mike’s shop, with his Bridgeport, full size lathe, tubing bender notcher and multiple welders sitting beside the lift, you might be inclined to think this is what he does for a living…but it’s not. It’s what he does for fun. His real job is working as one of those guys we can thank for keeping us “connected”. By connected, I mean Internet, TV, telephone. So not only does Mike have a strong creative side and talent with a fire wrench, he knows a thing or two about electricity and wiring!

Page 22: Vol 13 issue # 4 gearhead gazzette

Chopping a top is hard enough. But chopping four inches in front and three inches in back while also hacking full frame doors is a big job. The fit is perfect. The patina on this truck is real and very attractive. Being a fan of this style, when Mike asked if he should paint it, my instincts say no. The smoothed door handles, filled bed stake holes and other subtle metal art has just enough surface rust to make it beautiful. The custom cage is another story. Made from .120 wall stainless, it is as it will stay. Look closely at the unique art Mike included in the cage at the top and over the console. A helmet is in order when riding in this beast!

Underneath, is all home grown craftsmanship. To get the ride height Mike was after, the independent front suspension had to be moved up by notching the frame rails. Then he custom fabricated the nodular nine-inch, braced it for the occasional sudden acceleration the truck might experience and mounted it with a four link ladder bar set up and QA1 aluminum coil overs. While this may sound like a bunch of custom fab work, and it was, it’s what comes easy for Mike. Part of what he does for fun in his barn at home is build some of the most outrageous 4X4’s you’ve ever seen. After looking at some of the work he’s created for others, putting this girl together must have seemed easy.

Inside, other than the dangerous looking custom roll cage elements, it’s not all business as you might expect. The seats are comfortable and well placed with the custom console in just the right spot. Using his creative vision, Mike wanted to incorporate the bump theme on the inside. So he cut the bump from a couple fenders to jazz up the sides of the console. He says it’s not finished yet but it looks super cool. It has tunes and a back-up camera of all things.

Mike went the traditional, proven approach with the power and transmission. Starting with a seasoned 302 block, he made his own Boss 302 by adapting the 2 barrel heads from a 351 Cleveland and using a custom intake from B&A. Some people refer to these as Clevors, a combination of Cleveland and Windsor. Mike told the story of “this cam being small” compared to the first one. If this is the small cam, it certainly makes a beautiful lopey noise. The trans is a built C4 with all the typical drag race toys like hardened shafts, reverse valve body, transbrake and a 4,500 rpm stall converter. Drive shaft? Mike made that too.

Page 23: Vol 13 issue # 4 gearhead gazzette

This truck was anything but “show ready” clean when we visited. Apparently, in spite of not having front or back glass yet, Mike drives it, going to events like the F100 nationals and local cruise-ins. The evidence was the dirt, grime and his wife Chelsea’s sunglasses and sweater stowed in the passenger door. No door panels.

Mikes ’67 is a great example of good old country ingenuity and timeless craftsmanship executed around a proven and desirable design. And while it looks ultra-racy, it has decent street manners that allow Mike and others to enjoy it while not having to stand over it with a dust rag. I say we need more of these kinds of functional fun builds. Drive ‘em!

When you step back and look at Mikes truck, the proportions just seem to work. The patina lets you focus on the workmanship and design of his modifications while guiding your eyes away from the small imperfections earned over years of hard work as a truck. The four inch front and three and a half inch rear chop job is executed perfectly. The fit is faultless with the overall chop giving a sporty feel to the cockpit.

And they said it would only be done one

time…right!

The California HOT ROD Reunion turned legit in

2012. That’s right it’s come of age.

The 21st version of this great event took place

once again at the historic FAMOSO Dragstrip in

Bakersfield CA.

While all the cars tend to take the spotlight, this

deal is really about the people who made drag

racing what it is today. These Monday – Friday

working guys, spent every free minute they had

and any extra money they had and some they

didn’t have to build a race car and keep it running.

When you get to FAMOSO, it’s like you are

transported back 30, 40 or more years to the birth

and heyday of drag racing.

No cookie cutter look-a-like funny cars or fuel

dragsters here. No No! You can tell which one is a

Chevy, Ford, or even a Buick body and the

dragsters used all kinds of combinations to get

down the 1320. This event is an overload of cool!

Drag racing is the main event, but the car show in

“The Grove” is no slouch as well as a killer swap

meet. A cacklefest that has to be seen to be

believed! Throw in some great bench racing in the

hotel parking lots, and you have a fun filled

weekend of drag racing history.

The NHRA Museum will do it again in 2013 so

check out their website at www.nhra.com and click

on the Museum logo for all the info you need to

have a nitro filled weekend

Only going to do this one time…that’s a good one!

The 9th Annual KRIS KRINGLE Invitational Car

Show is in the history books as they say, and it

was another great show. It raised the bar on itself

again in 2012.

Tom Akers and his crew of volunteers do an

absolutely wonderful job of taking care of the

exhibitors at the show, all the while giving the

spectators new and exciting vehicles and

displays to see and enjoy.

It’s a unique showing of cars as most of them do

not have stanchions around them, so the

spectators and lovers of al this cool iron can get

up close and check them out.

Also unique is the tie in with the BIG Christmas

Crafts Bazaar, that takes place at the same time

upstairs. A little something for everyone at this

show.

Tom and his crew will be doing it again 2013 for

the 10th annual show, so put this one on your to

see list for the 1st weekend in November.

Finish Line….

www.gearheadgazzette.com

Yes! These little beasties are street legal. They run on either Kawasaki or Honda motorcycle engines and

co-opt vintage bumper car bodies into the most awesome form of mini-car we've seen in too long.

There are seven of these little monsters floating around California, and they're all the

creation of one man, Tom Wright, a builder in the outskirts of San Diego who figured the leftovers of the

Long Beach Pike amusement park needed a more dignified end than the trash heap.

They were originally powered by two cylinder Harley Davidson Motorcycle engines but they rattled like
