GEARHEAD GAZZETTE 2013

“I’m lookin’ for a deal!” (Editor’s Note: Winter time tends to be the time of indoor gearhead stuff to do. Here in the Mid-South and al over the USA, wintertime swap meets are taking place.) Sound familiar to you? I bet it does! It is part of the ritual of an automotive swap meet. No matter how big or how small the swap meet is, or how many vendors there are, there are always lookers and sometimes ….buyers. I say sometimes buyers, because you never see a swap meet close up early because everyone sold all the stuff that they brought to sell. In truth, the auto, hot rod, collector car swap meets really serve a number of very important functions for us gearheads. #1 in my opinion is the fact that it is a “social event”. Unless you live under a rock and have no friends, you are going to see some of your “car buds” at the swap meets in your area. Even at the ones further away or at national events, the odds are you will run into someone you know or have at least seen before. What happens when you “run into” that person(s)…you stop and catch up on what's going on in your and their world lately. You might even get some “gossip” too. After 10-20 minutes you move on and this social event will probably happen a couple of more times. #2 Truth is many of us really go to a swap meet to see who is selling what “stuff” out of their garage. We are just being “nosey” as they say. Don’t get me wrong, its ok as we all do it…me too. #3 is good old fashion Made in America capitalism. I have the part you want, you need it and the price is this much. How much we get or pay for that part is all relative on how rare it is, how bad I want

to sell it and how bad you want to buy it. Helping drive these decisions is the Parts Aftermarket and can you get a “NEW” part instead of buying an old rusty one. Do I want to just bolt it on, or am I willing to invest some “sweat, flesh & blood” into making an old part new again. All of these and many more are decisions we have to make at the point we find that elusive part we have been hunting for. There are many more examples like these, but the column is only so big. One thing that is interesting is pricing on parts. There is no written guideline for pricing used parts. It seems like a lot of folks “over price” what they are trying to sell. Yea…everyone is looking for “a deal”, but people will pay a fair price. Most people leave a swap meet grumbling about high prices. The sellers leave the swap meet taking most if not all of their parts home, grumbling about the cheapskates not will to pay them their price for a part. There’s got to be some middle ground folks, unless you just like coming to visit instead of buy and if you like showing off your part collection versus making your truck or trailer a little lighter at the end of the swap meet. All of us Gearheads in Middle Tennessee & the Mid-South have got 3 good swap meets coming up in February. Check the events section for more details. I will be out there with the rest of you. Up early… having a cup of coffee strong enough to add hair to my chest…with a stale donut…. catching up on what's going on with you…and I am not looking for “a deal”….I am looking for “the steal” on that part you have that I need….

Amazing things man has created in this world. Here is one of em’.

…would you like to accelerate?

For those who love numbers, engineers, speed freaks and those who think they have gone

too fast at one time or another, this puts Corvette performance in perspective. This article

mentions the Lingenfelter twin turbo powered Z06.

Read this thru slowly and try to comprehend the amount of force produced in just under 4

seconds! The last paragraph puts it all into perspective !

There are no rockets or airplanes built by any government in the world that can accelerate

from a standing start as fast as a Top Fuel Dragster or Funny Car …..and that includes any

aircraft launched by a catapult from an aircraft carrier. Nothing can compare…..

DEFINITION OF ACCELERATION

One top fuel dragster 500 cubic inch Hemi

engine makes more horsepower than the first

4 rows of stock cars at the Daytona 500.

It takes just 15/100ths (0.15) of a second for

all 6,000+ horsepower (some believe 8,000 HP

is more realistic - there are no dynamometers

capable of measuring) of an NHRA Top Fuel

dragster engine to reach the rear wheels.

Under full throttle, a dragster engine

consumes 1-1/2 gallons of nitromethane per

second; a fully loaded 747 consumes jet fuel

at the same rate with 25% less energy being

produced.

A stock Dodge Hemi V8 engine cannot

produce enough power to drive the dragster's

supercharger.

With 3,000 CFM of air being rammed in by the supercharger on overdrive, the fuel mixture

is compressed into a near-solid form before ignition. Cylinders run on the verge of hydraulic

lock at full throttle.

At the stoichiometric (stoichiometry: methodology and technology by which quantities of

reactants and products in chemical reactions are determined) 1.7:1 air/fuel mixture of

nitromethane, the flame front temperature measures 7,050 deg F. (Oxy-acetylene on "cut" is

6,300)

Nitromethane burns yellow. The spectacular white flame seen above the stacks at night is

raw burning hydrogen, dissociated from atmospheric water vapor by the searing exhaust

gases.

Dual magnetos supply 44 amps to each spark plug. This is the output of an arc welder in

each cylinder.

Spark plug electrodes are totally consumed during one pass. After halfway, the engine is

dieseling from compression, plus the glow of exhaust valves at 1,400 deg F. The engine can

only be shut down by cutting the fuel flow.

Sent in by Chuck Cobb

Illustration: Williams Graphic’s

Page 11: GEARHEAD GAZZETTE Vol 13 - Issue 2

If spark momentarily fails early in the run,

unburned nitro builds up in the affected

cylinders and then explodes with sufficient

force to blow cylinder heads off the block in

pieces or split the block in half.

In order to exceed 300 mph in 4.5

seconds, dragsters must accelerate an

average of over 4G's. In order to reach

200 mph well before half-track, the launch

acceleration approaches 8G‘s.

Dragsters reach over 300 miles per hour before

you have completed reading this sentence.

Top fuel engines turn approximately 540 revolutions from light to light! Including the

burnout, the engine must only survive 900 revolutions under load.

The redline is actually quite high at 9,500 rpm.

Assuming all the equipment is paid off, the crew worked for free, and for once NOTHING

BLOWS UP, each run costs an estimate $1,000.00 per second.

The current top fuel dragster elapsed time record is 4.428 seconds for the quarter mile

(11/12/06, Tony Schumacher, at Pomona , CA ). The top speed record is 336.15 mph as

measured over the last 66' of the run (05/25/05 Tony Schumacher, at Hebron , OH ).

Putting all of this into perspective:

You are driving the average $140,000 Lingenfelter 'twin-turbo' powered Corvette Z06.

Over a mile up the road, a top fuel dragster is staged and ready to launch down a quarter

mile strip as you pass. You have the advantage of a flying start . You run the 'Vette hard up

through the gears and blast across the starting line and pass the dragster at an honest 200

mph. The 'tree' goes green for both of you at that instant.

The dragster launches and starts after you. You keep your foot down hard, but you hear

an incredibly brutal whine that sears your eardrums and within 3 seconds, the dragster

catches and passes you. He beats you to the finish line, a quarter mile away from where

you just passed him.

Think about it, from a standing start, the dragster had spotted you 200 mph and not only

caught, but nearly blasted you off the road when he passed you within a mere 1,320 foot

long race course.

...... and that my friend, is

HOW IN THE WORLD DOES DRIVING MISS

DAISY FIT INTO THIS DEAL…………

Well it somewhat reminded me of the movie when

the Nashville Street Rod Assn. and some of the

Classic Chevy members got together at the

Marathon Village area back in November of last

year. You see the Antique Archaeology store is

located there, as is the Marathon car collection.

The A.A. store is Mike & Franks store from

American Pickers show. Both car clubs had a

great time at the store, plus a lecture by Barry

Walker who owns the Marathon car collection.

It was a great fall morning with the staff at the

Antique store treating us like royalty. Enclosed

are pictures of the group waiting to get into the

store and pictures of the well filled store. Many of

the collectables bring back memories of Mike &

Frank buying the items.

I know… I know..get on with the Driving Miss

Daisy connection. Well it seems that the

Marathon Village building was at one time part

of the Werthan Bag industrial complex here in

Nashville. It seems, if my history is correct, that

one of the senior Werthans wives had had an

episode driving her car about 1948, resulting in

the family getting her a chauffer. It seems

however, that the car they had purchased for

her was moved to the Werthan building for

storage, without her knowledge. The car was a

1948 Buick Roadmaster convertible, red leather

interior and a bright yellow paint job. The car sat

there on blocks until 1951, when a new Werthan

salesman working in the building spotted it and

inquired if it could be purchased. A deal was

struck & he had it serviced & titled & drove it to

Memphis where we lived. It wasn’t long before I

was pushing for my drivers permit as I was

about 14 & that was legal age for a

student/drivers permit. Included id is a picture

with me standing beside that old straight eight.

Ed & that famous 1948 Buick Roadmaster Convertible

Always a Nashville connection with Ed!

HOT RODDING IN THE MID-SOUTH cont.

Now concerning the Driving Miss Daisy part, my

dad did work for Werthan Bag & one of the senior

Werthans wives did have a chauffer and had a

car that was in storage. Look it up on the internet,

watch the movie and the info learned from my

father adds up correctly. Oh I guess I should say

that my father Al Woodard, retired from Werthan

as a Vice President of Sales. I just wish he was

here to read this.

My Dad about

1960 in front of

Werthan Bag with

the security guards

hat ………

Seeing the treasure’s that Mike & Frank have dug

up in their travels, reminds me of my basement

along with some of my buddies collection of trivia

of a typical basement of “trivia”. I guess you can

see all of them at any swap meet like the one at

the Tennessee State Fairgrounds the first Sunday

in February. I suppose most of the trivia bought

will be bought & sold hundreds of times before

they are actually used on a car or truck. I bet

these parts could tell some stories if they could

talk. Speaking of swap meets, there was one over

in Arkansas at Petit Jean Mountain that always

fascinated me. The MOTAA organization

sponsored it as one of their annual events with a

great show, lots of parts vendors and good old

fellowship.

Securing old & unusual cars was a trait that my

friends Richard Jones & Jimmy McPherson

seemed to enjoy. They both secured 2 vehicles

each from out of the country. Jimmy purchased a

1934 Ford Phaeton from Australia and later

another 1934 Phaeton from Argentina. Richard

purchased 2 phaeton’s from Argentina one was a

1931 2 door and the other a 4 door. Three ended

up as street rod’s & the 2 door as a restored

antique with a frame that was manufactured in

Germany. This car was shown at several meets

and won top honors & was later sold at the Kruse

Auction in Auburn IN.

The 1934 Phaeton was partially restored with the

completed chassis sold to a Canadian & the body

was sold to someone in Alabama who finished

the car. It seems that that car had a different body

that the U.S. version, due to a wide panel beneath

the doors and running boards.

Richards 31 Ford Deluxe the Duesenford

Richard built the 4 door phaeton to be similar to a

small Duisenberg as seen in the pictures. This

concept was a spinoff from our trip to Auburn

when he sold the 2 door 1931 Ford phaeton. The

first configuration was in tan & blue similar to

colors on a top selling Duisenberg we saw at

Auburn & later changed to a red & maroon color

scheme. This car was sold a few years ago at the

Charlotte Auto Fair & is now in Florida. The best

part of this car was the way you could weave the

story of how this car came to be. Someone at the

Duisenberg plant wanting to spin off with his own

car manufacturing or was it a Ford designer doing

the same. We had a great time telling the story.

HOT ROD FLASH……..

It seems that the GNRS show at Pomona this

January will have Tom Medley with Bill Akin’s

32 Ford roadster with Stroker on the doors

then it will be shown at the 65th anniversary of

HOT ROD Magazine Reunion…..& I am told

that designer Thom Taylor is to drive the

roadster, open car & no top, from Nashville to

LA, the week of January 14th, brrrrr! …………&

Bill’s 40 Ford will be shown at the HOT ROD

Magazine show.

HOT RODDING IN THE MID-SOUTH cont.

I guess we should mention all those old time local

runs we use to make in the Nashville area. The

clubs were starting to change in Nashville from

race to street due to all the monthly rod runs

primarily organized by the likes of Tommy

Sanborn & Lawrence Smith. The Nashville Street

Rod Assn., Shade Tree Street Rods & their

annual fall rod run, the Music City Street Rods

and the Midnight Rodder’s make up most of the

local clubs over the years. We sort of had a final

run of the year to remember all the members that

had past on, until we lost Ollie Perdue who was

one of the people who put that gathering together

every year. Shortly after that Robin & Agnes

Jordan started having the last run at their house,

then we lost Agnes. Things seem to change after

losing good friends. Monthly cruises to state parks

built interest in cars but the annual Mid-South

Street Rod Roundup always stood out as the big

one in Gatlinburg. Enclosed are some of the

pictures from the last Gatlinburg Roundup.

SEND THE PICTURES AND INFO ON YOUR RIDE OR YOUR FRIENDS RIDE AND WE’LL SHOW IT OFF RIGHT HERE!!

GEARHEAD GAZZETTE 2013

In a shop tucked away in Tinley Park IL, is a life size “model car kit” getting put together. Instead of

TESTORS glue holding everything together, MIG & TIG welds as pretty as you’ll see anywhere are

doing the “bonding” job. Where those small “rattle can” spray paints are used to make the models

colorful, “big boy” paints are being mixed and concocted to get just the right shade for every part.

When you check out Dave VerSchave’s 1955 Chevy Gasser, take a good long look…close your

eyes…and think back to your youth about the MPC model kit called the “BADMAN 55” that most of us

built as kids.

Dave never forgot about that model and made plans to build his “life size” version. We’re glad he

did!

We’re giving you an update here, as we have shown you work being done on this ride last year.

Dave has it closer to being done and we can’t wait. We know…just like when were kids…if you

rushed the build the model came out bad. Take your time Dave….we know this one will be so right!

WARNING: For Ages 18 & Older – Very Addictive

As we have highlighted in recent issues in this section of the magazine, there are a number of really cool rides in the Middle Tennessee area. We’re back this month with another cool ride from Franklin TN. Since we (Middle Tennessee) have the good fortune of having RTM Productions in “our backyard” as some would say. Accordingly, some of those good looking vehicles are fortunate enough to be featured on the various RTM shows and POWERBLOCK TV. Such is the case with this sharp Chevy C-10 “Pee-Cup” truck owned by Shane & Heather Watkins of Franklin TN. How can you NOT WANT to have this on TV with that bright VICTORY RED paint, cool wheels and all the detail work on the truck! You probably saw it on TV, but here are a couple of shot’s, courtesy of RTM Productions and Steve Longacre, Art Director for POWERBLOCK Magazine. While the cars are being filmed, they are also being photographed by Steve for use in the on-line POWERBLOCK Magazine (www.powerblocktv.com/magazine/) .

Here’s some shots that you haven’t seen yet, that were taken “BEHIND THE SCENE”….

Brizio. He truly is the Rodfather, as he has been doing

this hot rodding stuff for a long long time.

Andy and his wife Sue, like having friends come over for

a visit. Since they like company, they started holding a

small picnic for a few car friends years ago. It’s not small

anymore!

ANDY’s Picnic host’s multi-hundreds of hot rodders at

the laid back event. The focus is to have fun and enjoy

each other and all those cool hot rods. Being located up

in northern California, you know the weather is going to

be right too. Good friends, cool cars…”the way it was”

and is at Andy’s Picnic

This came to us from the MUSIC CITY MOPAR CLUB. Little hard to read based on the format it came

to us in, but please read it. “Car people” are the most giving in the world! This is a great story.

Finish Line….

www.gearheadgazzette.com

Life's journey is not to arrive at the grave safely, in a well preserved body, but rather to skid in sideways, totally worn out, shouting "...Holy Crap... what a ride!!!"

With a lot of swap meets going on this time of year, and “buying fever” happening for the upcoming car season, we thought running some of these old ad’s for hot rods would be pretty cool. Too bad the pricing isn’t like this today!!! We would be fighting each other..HA!!
