GEARHEAD GAZZETTE 2013

“These guys knew what shelf every part was on”

I am positive this has happened to you if you work on “old iron”. You walk into the “big chain” auto parts and stroll up to the counter. An eager young man ( and some women now too which is great to see) asks how he can help you. You say “I need to get a (fill in part you need)” The counter person looks up at you like a deer in the headlights and asks you “what kind of car is that for?” You tell them “ a (now insert whatever kind of cool old car you have)” Now they really look at you in that “oh sh*!” way…you know what I mean. They look in their turbo fast computer and tell you “it doesn’t go back that far!” Then they say “sorry”. You ask if they have a catalog they can look in to see if they carry the part(s) you need. You hear…sorry no we don’t. ARRRGGHHH!!!! Somebody please tell me where all the real auto parts countermen have gone? I know… I know, they have retired or been forced out of their jobs by the dreaded “turbo computer”. To all the “Big Chain Auto Parts” stores…you need to hire and keep a real “counter guy/car guy” on your staff / roster. Everything all the do-it yourselfers need isn’t in the computer. Now… before you send the hate mail in, because you work at, or one of your family members works at, or someone you know works at one these places, understand that I am not saying these are meaningless or trivial jobs, or that

these folks don’t do a good job. For the most part, 98% of the people behind the counter work hard and can help “joe or joanne wrench turner” on their 1995 or newer car or truck. What I am talking about is the need for a real car guy behind that counter. A person who is the “go to” for those questions that the “turbo computer” can’t handle. This person is worth their weight in gold in the parts business. If you had one of these types of counter persons in your parts store, I guarantee you, that word will get around about your store and you will gain a whole lot of new customers… REAL FAST. Hot Rodders are very loyal if you take care of them, Guess what…they will even pay a little more for their parts, if they know they don’t have to run around to 3 or 4 parts stores trying to find/get what they want. Look at the picture here…NO computers and they got the job done. What did they focus on…giving the customer the part(s) they want/need. These guys knew what shelf every part was on. The books balanced and a profit was made. I know computers aren’t going away, but you know what I mean. I need an investor for a new – old school style auto parts store. It’s called “The PARTS GUYS”… any takers?

MSP Track Update

Many meetings and new developments have taken place since the last issue of "Track Time".

The track centerline is now fully laid out and cleared.

The pre-meeting with Planning and Zoning to go over progress and plans went smoothly, and

the MSP Committee will be meeting with them again in June.

The base line sound profile is complete and measurements will be taken at our Sebring HPDE

to finish the sound study and recommendations for meeting sound abatement requirements.

Track Designer, Steve Crawford, is working on locations, numbers and the design of flag

stations.

Plans for runoff & curbings have been developed.

The placement of the of barriers has been worked in to the overall plan.

The design of control towers for the East and West circuits are currently being worked on.

Engineers are working on the specifications for bid packages, which will be completed in May.

The first "run" of the track will be performed with the use of a Gator vehicle this week. This run

will also be video-taped and posted to the Motorsports Park website once completed.

We will continue to share updates as this exciting project moves along. If you are on

Facebook, be sure to “Like” our fan page for even more updates and news.

MIDDLE TENNESSSEE RACERS TIM SLONE AND HIS SATURN ION COUPE & KRIS HENDERSON AND HIS ‘59 JAG will be at the Season Opening event for the ECTA, at the OHIO MILE in Wilmington OH on April 27 & 28th. Both Tim & Kris have run their rides “north of 2 bills” already and plan to do that and then some. Both of them are going for the “HOT ROD MAGAZINE TOP SPEED’ Challenge at this event. Good Luck guys and bring home the jackets!!

Now that my Art Studio is associated with The

Frantic Ford Funny car team, ½ the money I

make from each new piece of art will be going to

Bobby Frey for his recovery from Cancer.

For a piece done of your vehicle or race car will

be $500.00, you will receive a 18 x 24 original

print and signed. The shipping will depend where

you live and that cost is on top of the price of

work.

If you have a race team and you want a custom

piece of art for your sponsors with their logo

individually placed in the piece of art will be

$1000.00. For this you will get a piece 18 x 24

suitable for framing with just the subject, then

you will get an individual print for each sponsor

and signed with their logo.

All my work is digitally created, the print is the

original. So if you do not want more then 1 piece,

the piece will 1 of 1.

Feel free to look at my different pieces of to see

if there is a style that you like, you can then

message me to start the process.

Myles Limbrick

https://www.facebook.com/#!/MylesLimbrickArtStudio

Our friend and East Coast connection and feature editor/photo guy, Al Liebmann, sent this info along. He is part of Team Frantic Ford AA/FC. One of the teams key guys, Bobby Frey is fighting a huge battle with cancer, and the team is trying to raise donations in many different ways. One way they are doing it, is with the help of Automotive Artist Myles Limbrick. Myles has graciously committed to donating a big portion of the sales of his artwork to the Bobby Frey fund. VERY COOL!! You can help by purchasing one of the great looking prints of Myles. We have put a link to Myles online studio at the bottom of the page so make sure you click it and pick up a piece of cool artwork for your garage or man cave, and help Bobby win the fight he is in. Thanks!

You just knew that this was going to be one of

those special deals.

For those of you that read RODDERS JOURNAL

you know the caliber of vehicles they feature

each issue. Knowing this, you knew this event

would bring a lot of those vehicles out of the

garages.

And it did!! Along with a big following of the cool

and custom car lovers.

This wasn’t just a “big car park” deal. If you

wanted to see everything, you had to drive your

ride around Baltimore…or miss out on all the fun.

If you went last year, you already know they are

going to do it again this year in September. If you

didn’t go and were wondering, you know now.

Make plans now to be part of the “fun on the

waterfront” later this year. For now…enjoy some

of the cool cars that were there in 2012.

HOT RODDING IN THE MID-SOUTH Words & Picture’s by Ed Woodard

Woodard Historical Collection

Woodard Historical Collection

We’re going to do a little different deal for

everyone this month, and maybe for future

issues. We’re going to show more of the

pictures in my collection ( Ed note – HUGE

COLLECTION!!!). There are so many, but I

will try to keep them in some kind of order, if I

can.

This month I am a little partial to my good

friend Tommy Sanborn, as you will note. I

must give Tommy credit for getting everyone

of the early street rodders in the area, to take

trips in their cars. I remember his favorite

saying “the fun is in the run” and runs he

initiated. Every month we were on the road

going to state parks, all of them in a 3 state

area. No real shows then, except the State

Fair location show. The shows were where

ever we turned up on those monthly trips.

Then Tommy said “why not make a run to

the Gatlinburg area”, which we did 5 years

before the first Street Rod Nationals. Thanks

to Tommy the rest is history.

His current “rod” is a custom 1957

Chevrolet wagon, with a matching trailer full

of pinstriping supplies. Under construction is

a 1948 Crosley wagon with a hot engine. I

guess traditional pre-1949 street rods are in

our blood, and always will be.

After looking at the pic’s, give us some

feedback and let us know how you like the

“picture” edition.

I will still throw in some tall tales, as they

come back to me…..and I do have a few!

we met and learned from Herb, we learned

that Herb passed away.

As the Alan Jackson song says, “there’s

somethin’ ‘bout a Mercury”. And so is

this killer example of Rick Brownings ‘51

Mercury.

We’ll give you more info on the car as

you check out the shots of it, but we

want to tell you more about how the

pictures for the feature came to be. That

was an adventure in itself. Feature

photographer Butch “P8” Pate says it

best in his own words:

“I slobbered all over a '32 Hubmobile

coupe at the first Goodguys event in

Bowling Green, Kentucky. It was too

cool to be a rat rod, and had that "Just

Right" vibe to win a trophy at any show

in the country. Problem was, the car

was sitting in the swap meet, on a

trailer, for sale and even if I'd been

given more than enough money to

throw at the owner, it was already sold.

It was ecstasy and a complete bummer

all rolled up in a primered, chopped and

dropped, straight six powered, rolling

pile of bad-assery. I took many pictures

and never forgot the experience. The

next year rolls around and while strolling

through the show, a nicely finished

black '32 Hubmobile slaps me right in

the goods. My first thought is there's no

way this is the very same car. Why

would anybody screw up the coolest car

on planet awesome? Up walks the

owner. I need to ring-around-the-rosey

for a second and tie in the owner. My

very first real photo shoot for Car

Kulture Deluxe involved a cool little

coupe that took top honors at the very

first Redneck Rumble. The owner was

Scooter Russell of Drummond, Tn. I

forgot about Scooter until I ran into him

again at the first Goodguys in Nashville.

Scooter sold me two wheels and I knew

he looked familiar, but couldn't figure

out why. Back to our Hupmobile and

you guessed it, Scooter walks up gives

me all the info on his latest ride and fills

in the memory lapse for me.

Nine months go by before I get the next

phone call. The more Rick dug into the

Mercury, the more he found that needed

attention. You know the usual problem.

While you have the seats out, how about

new carpet. While we're at it, how about a

new headliner. Since the cars going to be

down for a month or so, how about we

freshen up the engine and so on, and so

on. Two and a half years later I finally get

the call. By the time Rick got done with the

car he had basically peeled the paint back

and put a brand new car under it. Our only

hope was a photo shoot at the upcoming

Nashville Goodguys show. We finally got

our chance, much to the displeasure of

Goodguys staff to get the shoot in just

minutes before Rick had to have the car in

the winner's circle. We can't thank the staff

enough for their patience and

understanding. A few weeks later while

attending the Hot Rod Reunion again in

Bowling Green Kentucky, I was having a

conversation with good friend and

managing editor for Ol' Skool Rodz and Car

Kulture Deluxe, Alan Mayes. Alan informs

me he had judged a local pin up contest

and needed to set up a photo shoot with

winner Shannon Million. In a strange twist

of fate Scooter Russell walks up and soon

the topic turns back to the Mercury. Russell

and I tell Alan our long and winding tale

about the Mercury. Then Alan mentions the

pin up contest winner needing a photo

shoot. Shannon and the Mercury seemed

like a natural combination and as they say,

the rest is history!”

And that Gearheads, is how some of these

stories and features come about!!

Rick’s 1951 Merc is one nice ride. The 4”

chop gives it that “cool factor” and nosing,

decking frenching, shaving and extended

quarters just makes it that much cooler. Slide

a DeSoto grille in and cover the metal with a

custom mixed pearl white and metallic red

flames and this one definitely says “Dig Me!!

It sits and rides low and mean thanks to the

Monte Carlo front clip and Ride Tech 4 Link

out back with AirRide components on all 4

corners. Add in some RADIR Tri-Rib 15 x 6

wheels with BFG’s and the Merc is riding

right. Stopping comes from a Disc / Drum

setup.

Motorvation comes from a ‘69 vintage 350

that’s been gone thru and a Gearstar GM

700R4 trans sending power to a GM 10 bolt

rear end.

As Shannon Million is showing us, the stock

Mercury seat is looking good with Black &

White Diamond tuck. Rick keeps an eye on all

the vitals with the gauges in the 1959 Chevy

dash that has been fitted in so nicely it looks

like it came that way from Mercury. A CPP

Chrome column topped with a ‘56 Merc

steering wheel helps him keep it between the

lines when he is out cruising the streets in his

hometown Dyersburg TN.

When Alan Jackson wrote the song about the

Mercury…he must have seen this one

cruising around.

I start telling him about the car I had seen

just one year earlier and he in fact says it's

the same car. I had no problems asking

him why on earth he changed the car. He

says he contacted a Hubmobile collectors

club and told them about what he'd bought.

Not wanting to be beaten to death at every

show he attends, he asked what they would

recommend. They surprisingly told him

since the car would be so hard to find parts

for, go ahead and hot rod it. So he made

the car his own. While we were discussing

a photo shoot he introduced me to his

friend Slade who also had a wicked ride at

the show. This was the first time I saw the

Mercury. I was in full panic mode all

weekend afraid someone else would share

one of these cars with the world in their

magazine before I even had a chance. We

immediately turned this into a double photo

shoot since Drummonds would be at the

least an 8 hour round trip. Two days later I

get a call. Slade sold the Mercury. My heart

sank. I ask Scooter if there's anyway I can

contact the new owner. He says "Yes, you

didn't let me finish. I bought the car!" Plans

were back on. One house, two bitchin' cars,

this is awesome!!! Until two weeks before

the actual shoot. I get another phone call.

The Mercury sold again. This time it was a

friend who lived "kinda, sorta" on the way to

Scooter's. Again I ask if I can contact the

new owner and set something up. The new,

and current owner of the Mercury, Rick

Browning was more than happy to talk to

me about a possible photo shoot. Problem

was, Rick didn't feel the car was nice

enough to be magazine quality. Would I

mind waiting two or three months while he

had someone go over the car and fix a few

things. I explain how important it would be

to keep the car out of public's eye and he

promised when the car was done I had first

shot at magazine coverage. I now have to

make the Drummond trip for one car but

I’ve got another car waiting that will blow

everyone away.

GEARHEAD GAZZETTE 2013 45

This article reviews the features and

benefits of Mother’s Headlight

Restoration Kit.

It has been developed to quickly and

safely restore, maintain and protect

all types of plastic and acrylic

headlights to crystal clarity. It easily

cleans away yellowing and evens

buffs out unsightly hairline scratches,

smudges and flaws in a single step.

The included PowerPlastic

4Lights polish restores

crystal clarity, leaving

a tough protective

oxidation inhibiting

polymer layer to

guard against future

degradation from

the elements. This

is a lot of features and

benefits in one

application.

The PowerPlastic 4 Lights is in kit

form with everything you need to do

the job. Of course you will need a

cordless drill for the PowerBall.

The kit includes the Powerball tool, an

8 oz. bottle of PowerPlastic 4Lights

polish, two restoration pads and a

15”x15” Microfiber towel.

You should tape off the area around

the lens to protect it from the cleaning

process. First,

go over the lens with the PowerBall

polish, moving left and right and up

and down motions. Follow this up

with the Microfiber towel to see if

this is only required to do the job.

In some of the cases, this will bring

them back to new again. If

more work is required,

then we use the

sanding blocks for

deeper cleaning. The

blocks are numbered

1-2-3-4. Each block has

a number on each side,

so two blocks cover

the 4 grades of grit

required. Soak the

pads in water for a

few minutes and

wet sand the lens

going from 1 to 4.

Then use the

PowerPolish again to

remove the sand marks. Repeat the

process until you get the results

desired. There should be enough

materials to do several sets of

lenses. All of the components are

reusable and the polish is available

at most retail centers.

Please clean the ball after use with

warm running water and dish soap to

remove the chemicals from the ball.

If these are allowed to dry and

harden in the ball, it will eventually

damage the ball, due to the loss of

flexibility.

Just like the other “fall classic” ( World

Series), The Battlefield Region of the AACA

Car Club hit a home run with their 23rd edition

of their Antique & Classic Car show.

The weather was perfect for a fall day, and

with plenty of parking, all they needed was a

few hundred cars to come out and fill up the

blacktop. And they did come out!!

We’ve got a small sample of some of the

great entries this event had in 2012. Wish we

had more room to show them all to you.

The more important thing about this show, in

our humble opinion, is the charity work that

takes place after all the awards are given out

and the cars and trucks have all gone home.

The Club chooses a number of charities to

help out with the proceeds from the show. This

is where the rubber meets the road in our

opinion. Car Folks helping others out that truly

need a hand. All the hard work that goes into

an event like this is forgotten when the smiles

come from helping out a needy group of folks.

Kudo’s to the “Battlefield Bunch”.

Make your plans now to attend the 2013

edition of this great event. They have a space

on the blacktop saved for you!

“We’ll do this one time!” Famous words that

were so wrong. The California Hot Rod

Reunion has been going strong every since

the “one time”.

This one is one of those you want to check

off your bucket list, because the fun factor is

maxed out.

Vintage drag racing, HUGE swap meet, show

& shine “in the grove”, fun every nite at the

host hotel and well you get the picture.

Since a lot of this stuff started out on the left

coast after WW2, it only stands to reason

that a lot of cool vintage stuff is out there.

Throw in holding this deal at the historic and

oh so cool FAMOSO Dragstrip in Bakersfield

CA, just adds to the cool vibe.

Take a look at some of the cool cars and stuff

that was going on at the 2012 CHRR.

Finish Line….

www.gearheadgazzette.com

In todays drag racing corporate team world, the haulers are huge slab sided billboards rolling down

the interstates. “Back in the day” as they say, when racers started hauling their race cars to the

track, instead of driving them like they did for many years,, the trucks you see here are just some of

the examples of what was being used. Remember now, in the 60’s, these were “state of the art”

and if you had one, you were in the “big time” deal. We love em’….they have character.
