2 ■ Spring 2009

Brothers,

2008 was a great year during which Alpha Phi Omegaaccomplished many great things. As proud as I am ofall that has been done and all the individual and groupefforts that made it possible, we need to focus on thefuture and what it will take to tap the Fraternity’sunlimited potential.

We need what I call the ABCs – Accountability, Brotherhood andCollaboration. Accountability: Say what you mean and mean what you say. Ifyou promise to do something, do it. As Past President Jack McKenzie says,“Taking the job is voluntary, doing it is not.” Follow through or let someoneknow if you need help or think you may fall short. Brotherhood: Always treateach other as family. If your family is anything like mine, that doesn’t mean wealways get along. However, it does mean that we take care of each other, wetreat each other with respect and we can disagree without being disagreeable.Collaboration: Work together for synergy, where the whole is greater than thesum of its parts. We can do more together than separately, and we all benefitwhen new ideas and different perspectives are brought into the mix. Plus, it is a great way to help others develop as leaders.

So, to what do we apply the ABCs? We need to keep our focus on more healthy chapters. That means more

tools for our chapters and local leaders. More skills training, more resourcesavailable online, more development of alumni volunteers, more contributions, more service projects in our database, more advertising materials, morecommunication within the Fraternity.

We need to raise APO’s profile in the community. I want students arrivingon campus primed to join APO. They should already know about the Fraternityand be looking for a way to get involved. When prospective employers see AlphaPhi Omega on a resume, they should know what it is. We need to increaseawareness of the Fraternity to the public-at-large.

We need to find new ways of truly engaging our alumni to keep more ofthem involved with the Fraternity after graduation. There need to be opportunitiesto stay connected that fit into the ways lives change after college. Not everyonecan or should make the kind of commitment that the Board of Directors, section leadership and advisors make. There needs to be options that are morefamily-friendly and provide value to our alumni. We also need to do a muchbetter job of helping our brothers understand that membership is a lifetimecommitment.

We must make APO more diverse, both within our chapters and nationally.By diverse I mean more than just race or gender. We need people from all walks oflife – different socioeconomic groups, different religious and political affiliations, even different class years and majors. Greater diversity brings greater perspective, new ideas, more understanding and helps us meet our Founder’s goal of bringing

peace to the world. Each of our chapters should be a cross-section of their campus, including everyone interested inLeadership, Friendship and Service. We must all reach out tothose around us, making sure there is room for all and thateveryone feels truly welcome. We face this same challenge as a Board and must step up our efforts to attract new, diverseindividuals rather than recruiting from the same old spots. We can all make an effort to encourage those around us to getmore involved, especially those from underrepresented groups.

We need to look at the way we do business andre-examine everything. As Plato wrote, “The unexamined lifeis not worth living.” Because we’ve always done it that wayshould never be the reason we do anything. Change just forthe sake of change is not wise either; however, everythingshould be reviewed on a regular basis and reassessed toensure it still helps us reach our goals, which should also bereviewed routinely. We need to foster continuous improvement

by engaging in critical self-evaluation as individuals, as afraternity and as a Board of Directors. The Board has alreadybegun a review of our national goals to ensure they stillrepresent the proper direction for the Fraternity. The nextstep is to look at the structure of the Board to ensure we aredesigned to meet our goals in the most effective manner.

We have a lot of work ahead of us. It’s going to beanother busy, exciting year for Alpha Phi Omega, full ofimprovements and growth and, as always, Leadership,Friendship and Service.

In brotherhood,

Maggie

Life Membership in Alpha Phi Omega is a way of continuingthe legacy you began as a student and creating a lifetimeconnection with the Fraternity. This year we encouragedalumni Life Members to pass on the legacy by “sponsoring” a student’s new Life Membership. Actives who were notalready Life Members and were attending the 2008 NationalConvention entered their names in a drawing. The winnerswere given the name of their sponsor so they could make a

personal connection. Receiving a Life Membership from adistinguished alumni brother made their experience andmemories of National Convention even more special.Sponsors felt good about supporting a student in a personaland meaningful way. The Alpha Phi Omega Endowmentreceived $3,250, which will continue to grow and benefit theFraternity for years to come! Following are the 65 sponsors ofthese Life Memberships:
