How did it get to be March so soon? This winter is flying by, but with all the snow I’m sure most of you have been out enjoying every minute of it. As you flip through this issue of Georgian Life you will see that our communities were a buzz with activities! As usual, this month, a tonne of money was raised for many different good causes and organizations. Thank you to all of the people that take the time to organize, plan and implement all of the events that keep people connected and committed to what “pulls at their heartstrings”.

I hope this March Break you get the opportunity to spend some time with your families and friends doing the things you love. Take a look at the online calendar at www.georgianlife.ca or turn to page 12 to check out the Event Listings if you still need some ideas.

Easter comes especially early this year - always a popular day for attending church, getting together for a big family meal, and staging an Easter egg hunt. Then it will be time to dust off our bikes, get out the hiking boots and slurp a fresh batch of maple syrup. So enjoy the snow while you can!

See you out there! Selena

Wasaga Beach Snowman Mania

On Saturday as part of the many events planned for Snowman Mania there was a Midway at Stonebridge, the First Annual Polar Bear Dip organized by the Wasaga Beach Rotary Club and the event raised $7500 for charity. It was held at the Wasaga Sands Park where the Toboggan party took place, sponsored by the Rotary Club and the Kinette’s Club where free hot chocolate and hot dogs were very much appreciated. Rompin’ and Stompin’ with Tubbs to Save One Boob at a Time!

Yes it’s that time of the year when those crazy ladies in pink throw on the snowshoes at Scenic Caves and raise a lot of money and awareness for the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation! The event’s tally this year was over $45,000. Tremendous support for a great cause! Well done ladies and special thanks and congrats to the ‘Breast Damn Stompers’ who were awarded for both Best Dressed Team and Top Team Fundraisers bringing in over $10,000! We have all heard the expression ‘it is how you play the game that counts’. Most games are focused on winning; not many are co-operative. To win at baseball you have to be on the winning team

and play all the innings.

How many times in your life have you: • Been thrown a curve ball – you didn’t see it coming • Felt like you were in the outfield – nothing was happening • Waited for the home run - the big hit that knocks you out of the park • Wished you could stop fumbling – and be a better catcher • Keep getting walked – and you want to run • Struck out – three strikes and you were out • Found your bases loaded – you were so close and tried so hard • Wished you were on a winning team

As a Coach I see many who just want their homerun. To win the game though you have to be in it for the long haul; you have to play all the innings. It takes team effort in life and in business. Who is on your team? Do they know their position and the value they bring?

If you have struck out, know it is part of the game. Keep practising, work with your team, stay positive and focused. You will be back up to bat going for that home run before you know it.

Life can be full of setbacks, challenges and disappointments. Without these we really would not appreciate the excitement of new opportunities and the sweetness of success. In truth, the homeruns are a bonus and a small part of the game. Keep playing ball it’s your life. Game on!

9 Geckos in a row is?

Answer: (a) a lot of Geico TV commercials to watch (even though that little green lizard is charming, colourful and cute); (b) the very successful annual curling bonspiel organized by Julie and Gareth Carter/Men with Knives Catering in support of various charities; or (c) both of the above. The answer could be (c) but in this case I’m referring to (b) as this year’s curling extravaganza surpassed other years in terms of success and speaking of our colourful green lizard friend... how about the colourful costumes some of the curling teams came up with this year! Traditionally, we have used our global muscles when exercising. This, however, produces short, bulky muscles, precisely the type of musculature most prone to injury.

Ignoring muscles that are required for everyday tasks (or functional fitness) can leave them weak and susceptible to injury. To avoid this, we need to alter how we look at fitness, changing our focus from looking good on the outside, to building and stabilizing those muscles deep inside our bodies that form our core- that part of one’s body to which everything is attached and, from which every movement is controlled.

In fact, the core musculature is involved in almost any athletic activity. A strong core not only affects performance, but it is crucial in preventing injuries as well. For example, a strong and stable trapezius (muscles around the shoulder) leads to scapular stability, which in turn, decreases the risk of shoulder injuries.

Similarly, a stable hip girdle plays a significant role in maintaining the health of not only the hips, but the knee and ankle joints as well. And, of course, strong abdominal and back muscles translate into a stable spine, good posture, and less chance of back injuries.

Core strength and injury prevention are not just relevant to sports performance. You can just as easily turn your ankle walking down the street, or pull a muscle in your back when lifting groceries, as you can playing basketball. Core training can provide a higher level of general fitness so that everyday tasks can be performed with greater ease. This way, muscles won’t be pulled or strained quite so easily and loads of laundry won’t feel as heavy. As core strength increases, so too does muscle density and fat burning capacity.

By incorporating core strength and stability training into our exercise programs, we are building a solid foundation for our bodies to look, feel and function better.

This is what Pilates can do for you as it relates to core strength. In summary, it strengthens one’s core muscles over time, improving stability, balance, strength, flexibility and posture, producing again, over time a longer, leaner look.

Daredevils on boards

The eyes of the ‘winter sports world’ were focused on our region once again as Blue Mountain hosted a stop on the FIS World Cup Snowboard Cross schedule. Three days of exhilarating high-speed snowboard action as those ‘daredevils’ entertained the crowds through training and qualifying sessions and, of course the amazing finals with four competitors in each heat going ‘for broke’ head on! It just doesn’t get any better... well except of course for the fact that two proud Canadians ended up on the podium and took home the hardware! Congratulations to Christopher Robanske for finishing 1st in the Mens and Dominique Maltais who finished 2nd in the Ladies. Another simply awesome showing and a spectacular event! Ontario Track 3 Ski Association Art Charity Event

Their mission: Discovering Ability through the Magic of Snow Sports. The Ontario Track 3 Ski Association is a volunteer non-profit charitable organization that teaches children and youth with disabilities to downhill ski and snowboard. If you ever have the opportunity to witness some of the enthusiasm, joy and sheer excitement of these physically challenged participants flying down the slopes, you’ll understand just how amazing this organization and their programs really are for those who take part. In support of this wonderful cause founder, Doug Keary, Henk Engels (Executive Director) along with local artist, Art Cunanan, and volunteers all held a charitable art show and sale at the Tremont Hotel over the weekend of Feb.22-24th. Congratulations on a great event and thanks as well to the Probus Ski Legends for kicking off the weekend fundraiser with a donation of $1000. Kudos to all! Photos/Story: Dave West Photography

Open 24 HoursOpen 24 Hours

I had a conversation with a friend recently who said she can’t wait to retire. I asked her when she intended to retire and she replied in about ten years. I asked her what she thought she would do with her time in this next phase of her life. She said she wasn’t sure... Well I said lucky for you, there are 120 months in ten years. Ten more winters and ten more springs, ten more… You should have seen the look on her face! You see, ten years seems like such a long time, but when you break it down, it is actually not that far away. I suggested to her to decide what she wants to do in retirement she should try an exercise to find out what she enjoys and what makes her happy doing it. Have you ever considered this?

Ask yourself what makes you happy? If you had all the money to do whatever you wanted, what would you do? Who would you do it for and what would make you happiest? Where would you live? What would your days look like? How would you spend your time?

Retirement for some is a date in time, for some a life event… Some events can be anticipated, some can’t. Some people are forced into retirement by a health crisis of their own or of someone they love. Others have a service pension and golden handshake. Retirement is change and preparing for the next phase in your life is critical to your happiness… and those around you!

So how do prepare for this next phase? I suggest to my clients that writing a “bucket list” on a piece of paper of all the things they ever thought of doing, places they ever thought of going and people they would love to meet is a good place to get started. Asking yourself why you think these things would make you happy is a clue to future happiness in retirement.

If retiring to play golf every day is your idea of being happy, go for it. I would suggest that you should probably dig into the bucket and get a couple of other ideas of things to do. Just be happy at what you do.

“Choose a job you love, and you will never have to work a day in your life.” - Confucius

“Choose a retirement that makes you happy and you won’t have to work at it”… is also good advice. At the very least, it’s the advice I like to share with my clients and friends. My happiest friends are those who choose to be happy regardless of the phase of their life. You can too!

Thanks Mr. Architect

The Treasures of Collingwood – The Architects Who Built Our Town (which runs from Feb. 15th through March 31st at the Press Gallery - the former EB Building at 65 Simcoe St.) is a remarkable exhibit that highlights the works of six notable Collingwood architects who are responsible for some of the most impressive buildings erected through the early years (late 1800’s through early 1900’s) of our town’s development. An exhibit not to be missed! Thanks to the Collingwood Branch of the Architectural Conservancy of Ontario, corporate and private sponsors and, of course our wonderful friends Richard and Anke Lex. Has this Canadian winter left you feeling sluggish? Have subzero temperatures and a lack of sunshine driven you inside to hibernate where comfort foods lurk around every corner? Self-medicating the winter blahs with sugary treats is not uncommon and I’m no stranger to seasonal temptations. If you’re riding my wavelength, try these two simple substitutions to boost your wellbeing before spring arrives.

Beans for breakfast.

Beans are high in fiber and protein which help to regulate blood sugar, keeping you energized and satisfied between meals. Black beans are my favourite. Similar to blueberries, they are loaded with antioxidants to help fight the effects of growing older and living in a toxic world. Doctor’s Rx: enjoy a ½ cup of cooked black beans beside your eggs instead of toast or a bagel. Garnish with sliced tomato, fresh cilantro and a pinch of sea salt for a savory start to your day. By replacing baked goods with a serving of beans, you will blast away that winter wheat belly and supercharge your energy.

Orange is the new beige.

Sweet potatoes are loaded with beta carotene, the precursor to Vitamin A that helps to strengthen your immune system and prevent heart disease and cancer. Sweet potatoes are also a great source of potassium, which helps to prevent hypertension and stroke. Doctor’s Rx: use sweet potatoes instead of regular potatoes in any recipe. Mash them. Bake them. Put them into soups and add to any stir fry. Slice them into super thin rounds and you’ve got raw crackers. Remember to leave the skins on for added fiber.

Change your food. Change your life! For more bright ideas, visit my blog www.thenaturopathickitchen.com where you can download my free recipe e-book.

As bookkeepers we come across multiple types of businesses in varying degrees of disarray. The reoccurring theme seems

to be that many business owners are great at providing their service or product, but when it comes to organizing their paperwork, they’re lost. They tell us they just don’t know how to get it organized and they don’t know where or how to start. Don’t overthink it, just choose a starting point and work on getting organized a little at a time.

Have a filing system that doesn’t include the kitchen table or the dash of your vehicle. Lost receipts equal lost expenses and HST credits; don’t throw your hard earned money away. We have two suggestions: the first is to purchase a portable filing box, hanging folders, file folders and tabs, organize the files so that they work for you. As an example, you might make files for banking, credit cards, HST, customer invoices and vendors. Break down your vendors by type, such as advertising, auto, office, job supplies, tools, vehicle etc. Our second suggestion: simply organize your files by month. Purchase an accordion file folder with the months, or numbers 1-12 already printed on the taps. And then pick a time to sit down and start putting your receipts in order. You don’t need to do it all at once, just work your way towards making it a new habit.

And, remember that you need to keep a detailed record of your invoicing, expenses and HST. Find a method of keeping track that works for you. It could be manual, using a spreadsheet or accounting software. Regardless of the method you choose it has to be accurate and it has to provide enough detail to determine your tax obligations and entitlements.

Organizing your paperwork is about finding what works best for you. It can be overwhelming, but once your paperwork is organized your spirits will lift, and soon you’ll notice that you’re able to focus on the real task at hand, selling your product or service.

“Brother can you ‘spare’ a dime?”

Notice how adeptly I ‘coined’ that and worked an old Depression Era song title, bowling terminology, money and part of the name of one of my favourite organizations into that pun... wow sometimes I even amaze myself... not! What does amaze me is the great effort and energy that the Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Georgian Triangle put into their Bowl for Kids’ Sake each year! This is their largest annual fundraising campaign and it is vital that dollar goals be achieved in order to continue to provide the wonderful programs for the ‘littles’ in our region. Individuals and businesses in our community have always been tremendous in supporting this cause but we can never rest on our laurels. Please help if you can and let’s make this year the be$t ever! Okay, maybe a little extreme, and parents no reason to keep your kids indoors, but there really were people acting like Polar Bears... or should that be almost ‘polar bares’? Profile on Business - Osteria Vitto

A new restaurant opens their doors in Stayner - wonder what all the talk is about?

An innovative flare has arrived in the tightly knit town of Stayner and it’s considered a place where families, friends and neighbours, and just about anyone, can enjoy a relaxing glass of the finest wine, a Prosecco drink or Bicicletta Spritzer, a bite to eat and a fun evening away from home.

Yes, Osteria Vitto/Bar Bivio is open for business. At Osteria Vitto, Italian restaurant and bar, you are sure to enjoy delectable dining that is tasty and unique all in a relaxed and friendly atmosphere. The lighting alone is sure to set the perfect mood for your memorable dining experience.

Osteria Vitto opened its doors on Friday, February 15th, and seats 56 people downstairs and 46 upstairs. This savvy yet exclusive restaurant is a hidden treasure that won’t stay hidden for long.

Over the last 40 years, the Osteria Vitto building has been owned by only four different owners including Osteria Vitto. Originally, the building was built for the Ford Restaurant. Next, the Dutch House Inn, then CJ’s Bar, Fud Main Street Bistro and now, Osteria Vitto Restaurant and Bar Bivio (for private parties and functions in the upper level). Bivio stands for junction or intersection and that is exactly where they are located in Stayner; across from the Royal Bank and at the lights.

Partners, Bruno Cohen and Chef Adam Barone both emphasize that each and every dish is prepared with care. They have been involved in the industry since they were very young and it truly is their passion. “Adam has been cooking since he was twelve years old with his Nonna in Sicily and throughout Europe and I have been in the industry since I was about 14 years old working for my mother, busing tables, dishwashing, cooking and managing,” says Bruno.

The average pricing for a couple dining is just under $100 and usually hovering around the $60 mark. Their food is sourced out as sustainable and as local as possible and some of their pastas are even rolled out by hand. “We have a lot of gluten free options and I have created a gluten free pasta which we hand roll on site,” says Chef Adam.

Imagine throwing a party and at the same time enjoying it alongside your guests: a birthday, a rehearsal dinner, staff party or wedding, aprés ski, family reunion or a get together with friends. Every day is a celebration at Osteria Vitto/Bar Bivio. Their chef will be more than happy to create a special menu just for you and your guests.

“We have a number of vegetarian options and we are more than happy to create something specific for someone desiring something different. Our promise is to ensure your evening here at Osteria Vitto and Bar Bivio will not soon be forgotten,” says Chef Adam.

The architectural design of Osteria Vitto and Bar Bivio reflect old world flair brought out into a nouveau look which was created by designer Trish Matthews and boasts a certain appeal that is sure to entice any connoisseur of fine Italian cuisine and good times.

Osteria Vitto/Bar Bivio is located at 7304 Highway 26 in Stayner, Ontario. For Reservations please call 705.428.9998 or email [email protected].

Magic of Children in the Arts

Inspired in encouraging children to create, exhibit and celebrate art, Derivative Abstract Painter, Lory MacDonald, founded The Magic of Children in the Arts Show in 1994 and continues to enthral the community with her commitment and passion for celebrating children’s art. With the help of volunteers and strong partnerships, this registered charitable organization has enlightened the hearts of many people with thousands of beautiful pieces of artwork created by our community’s children over the years. New this year, Lory introduced workshops into a few schools to help guide each child when creating their masterpiece. Celebrating their 20th anniversary next year, The Magic of Children in the Arts continues to review children’s artwork giving a positive comment and a prize of art materials for each and every child. The celebration culminates with an opening awards reception at the Collingwood Library on March 23rd from 1-4pm so be sure to receive your prize package and celebrate children’s art! The artwork will be displayed starting March 4th through to the 31st at the Collingwood Public Library. Show your support and check out the amazing display of children’s artwork. Battling it out for top spot at Winterfest

Over a hundred of some of Ontario fittest athletes gathered at Valley Ridge Farms in the Town of the Blue Mountains ready to crush some WOD’s (workouts) that would take them way outside their normal boxes and comfort zones! The 3rd Annual Winterfest event which was created by Crossfit Indestri in Collingwood 3 years ago, was meant to challenge athletes by bringing them outside their boxes/gyms and exploring our natural environment. This year the UG Series took over the event and blended adventure racing and snowshoeing with Crossfit to create a new sport that challenges all athletes. The UG Series is already planning the WOD’s (Workouts) for their return to Wasaga Beach on Saturday, July 27th, 2013! Photos: Jennifer Nichol

VISIONS OF POSSIBILITIES

When we think of “green” living , it often conjures images of that dreaded “DO NOT...” list. Daily, we are told by the media that we need to be living “green”. Where do we start? If we begin with preservation in mind and strive to improve habits, we open the door of possibilities.

It really comes down to simple behaviour modifications. Start with a vision of sucesss with ideas of well-being that are followed with practical solutions. Every day can be a step towards a world that provides us all with clean air, water and food. It’s all in our way of thinking. The descisions we make daily in our homes, in our communities and our relationships, permeate to everything around us.

Remember that children absorb information and behaviour like sponges. If we model respect for others and the environment, this imprinting will last for generations to follow.

Along with all the regular energy and water saving practices, we can borrow instead of buying by swapping with friends or on-line communities. There are many ways to exchange and share materials at less cost and less waste. When heading out on the road, plan ahead and get directions... you’ll save time and fuel. Even upon surfing the web you may find the opportunity to help the environment. For instance, if you make www.envirosearch.org your search engine users help to generate revenue from Yahoo. The simple click of a mouse can contribute to worldwide environmental projects.

Try not to view the effort as sacrifice but rather embrace it with the knowledge that you are creating a better today. If we focus on people -- individuals in households, and communities, and as members of organizations and institutions, we will discover that common needs are the key. If we strive to overcome our resistance to change we can improve life today and for tomorrow. The solutions lay at the roots of our beliefs. “Optimism is the faith that leads to achievement, nothing can be done without hope and confidence.”--Helen Keller

Achieving sustainability is a partnership; if we live each day aware that we have infinite impact on all life and that everything is brought about by nature, just imagine the bright future ahead of us for generations to come.

Eat your heart out!

This Valentines Day I treated my loved ones to heart shaped pizzas at Boston Pizza. For every heart shaped pizza that was sold $1 goes to the Boston Pizza Foundation. Since its inception in 1990, the BP Foundation has raised more that $10 million for charities across Canada. It was a nice evening supporting a great cause and eating our hearts out! (NC)—Thinking of selling your home this spring? The single most effective and budget-friendly way to ensure your home is at its most appealing is to make sure it is meticulously clean, says Ron Abraham, president of the Ontario Real Estate Association.

Abraham says that elbow grease and an eye for editing are the real keys to springing your home to the head of the pack.So what should be on your spring cleaning checklist?

“The exterior, entryway, main living space, kitchen and bathroom(s) tend to make the biggest impression on would-be buyers so make sure to take special care with these areas,” recommends Abraham.

Here’s a helpful checklist to guide your spring scrubbing: • De-clutter: Clutter distracts buyers from your home’s features. And don’t just throw everything into a closet! This will make it seem like the home doesn’t have enough storage space. • Depersonalize: To help buyers envision themselves in the space, remove personal items like family photos, toys and children’s art. • Make sure the exterior of the home is well maintained –

this means snow removal in early spring and landscaping in late spring/summer. • Kitchens are the heart of any home. Make sure the kitchen is clean (pay close attention to floors counters and appliances), free of last night’s cooking smells and appears organized and functional. • Bathrooms should be sparkling clean, free of clutter and as spa-like as possible (Stocked with fresh towels and soaps, and well-lit). • Windows should be washed on the inside and the outside – clean windows will really brighten up your home. • Furniture should be polished, upholstery and drapes cleaned and carpets and rugs steam cleaned.

“Spring cleaning efforts will help prepare your home for sale. Remember, making your home look its best does not require spending a ton of money on costly projects; rather, make sure your home is sparkling clean and talk to your Realtor about else you can do to stage your home for sale.”

If The House Is A Rockin’ Don’t Bother Knockin’

The house (otherwise known as the Collingwood Curling Club) was really rockin’ with this year’s 7th edition of the bonspiel in support of Breaking Down Barriers. Not only did the curlers and their supporters have a great time but the event raised in excess of $10,000... now that’s a winner! Kudos to all those who lent their support to this marvellous event!
