Budi Wirawan (12511012)Seminar What is Geothermal

Geothermal energyisthermal energygenerated and stored in the Earth. Thermal energy is the energy that determines thetemperatureof matter. The Geothermal energy of the Earth's crust originates from the original formation of the planet (20%) and fromradioactive decayof minerals (80%). Thegeothermal gradient, which is the difference in temperature between the core of the planet and its surface, drives a continuous conduction of thermal energy in the form ofheatfrom the core to the surface

Krakatoa, orKrakatau(Indonesian:Krakatau), is avolcanic islandsituated in theSunda Straitbetween the islands ofJavaandSumatrainIndonesia. The name is also used for the surrounding island group and thevolcanoesas a whole. The Krakatoa volcanoeserupted and explodedin 1883, causing massivetsunamisand killing at least 36,417 people, while simultaneously destroying over two-thirds of Krakatoa island. The explosion is considered to be the loudest sound ever heard in modern history, with reports of it being heard up to 3,000 miles (4,800km) from its point of origin. Theshock wavesfrom the explosion were recorded onbarographsaround the globe.Currently, what had been the northernmost of the three pre-1883 Krakatoa volcanoes,Perboewatan, has re-emerged from the ocean, and is the principal force in the on-going formation of a new island,Anak Krakatau, or "Child of Krakatoa.

Produces Electricity Geothermal energy - Earth heat - can be found anywhere in the world. But the high-temperature energy that is needed to drive electric generation stations is found in relatively few places.

Geothermal power is considered to besustainablebecause the heat extraction is small compared with the Earth's heat content.[5]Theemission intensityof existing geothermal electric plants is on average 122kg ofCO2per megawatt-hour (MWh) of electricity, about one-eighth of a conventional coal-fired plant

Geothermal Energy in IndonesiaGeothermal power in Indonesiais an increasingly significant source ofrenewable energy. As a result of itsvolcanicgeology,Indonesiahas 40% of the world's potentialgeothermal resources, estimated at 28,000megawatts(MW).[1]Currently Indonesia is the world's third largestgeothermal electricityproducer after theUnited Statesand thePhilippines. Installed production capacity (2011) is almost 1,200MW from six geothermal fields inJava, NorthSumatraand NorthSulawesi.[2]In 2007, geothermal energy represented 1.9% of the country's total energy supply and 3.7% of its electric power

Hot stuff:Indonesia is tied with Mexico for having the third highest use of geothermal power. The Wayang Windu power station is Indonesias biggest geothermal power producer, tapping into naturally occurring underground pockets of steam and hot water, with wells as deep as 3 kilometers.GEs recent loan from its Energy Financial Servicesbusiness is helping the plant double its output24
