As Supreme Court Judge Lucy McCallum delivered both the sentence and the character assessment, she also took aim at 40-year-old Gittany’s ‘‘flamboyant’’ and attention-seeking relation- ship with new girlfriend Rachelle Louise. Ms Louise, who bears a strong resemblance to her boyfriend’s murdered fiancee, was not in court to hear the sentence. Justice McCallum said Git- tany’s relationship with Ms Louise had been conducted ‘‘very much in the public eye’’ and in the knowledge that she could be an import- ant witness to his character. She said Gittany encour- aged Ms Louise’s paid tele- vision appearances because he thought the publicity would help his case. As part of her television deal, Ms Louise last night said she was optimistic Gittany would not do the sentence. ‘‘I still want to be optimistic in a sense that I believe he won’t do it,’’ she said in a statement given to the Seven Network. ‘‘I truly do believe he has been wrongfully convicted.’’ During the trial, the court heard Gittany was controll- ing and had installed CCTV cameras inside their apart- ment and used a computer program to monitor Ms Harnum’s text messages and her emails. The judge imposed a maxi- mum of 26 years for the mur- der of Ms Harnum in July 2011. Gittany will be eligible for parole in May 2031 but his lawyers say he maintains his innocence and will appeal. Journalist Mike Willesee in Bali to interview Corby for Channel 7 Picture: BRADLEY HUNTER Outrage at Corby deal SYDNEY: Channel 7 person- alities and senior govern- ment figures have joined a growing chorus of anger against the television net- work’s decision to pay Scha- pelle Corby $2 million to tell her story. Treasurer Joe Hockey and Seven star David Koch are among those who yesterday expressed their distaste over convicted drug smuggler Corby’s windfall. However, taking into ac- count ratings for rival Nine’s Schapelle telemovie and the Schapelle: Finally Free documentary, Seven’s gamble may well not pay off. Industry insiders suggest Seven would likely charge $100,000 for a 30-second spot during the interview, double its usual rate, but adver- tisers may be wary of wan- ing public interest in the convicted drug smuggler. Nine’s Schapelle telemovie averaged an ordinary 1.022 million viewers across Aust- ralia’s five capital cities on Sunday only half the whopping 1.974 million for Seven’s INXS: Never Tear Us Apart. Monday’s Schapelle Final- ly Free documentary did even worse with a poor 627,000 viewers nationally, and the repeat of the Scha- pelle telemovie attracted just 241,000 straight after. In Indonesia, criticism continues about Corby’s re- lease and news that she will make a small fortune from a tell-all media interview. And her parole officers have warned that any media interview conducted with- out their permission would be a disciplinary matter. They say that she should have asked them first and co-ordinated the interview with them. SMOKE SIGNALS MELBOURNE: Operators for emergency number triple zero are being inundated with calls about smoke from Victoria’s bushfires. The smoke has spread over wide areas, including from the Kilmore fire north of Mel- bourne, which is extending into central Victoria and the metropolitan area. The fire in the open-cut coal- mine near Morwell in the La- trobe Valley is also sending up large amounts of smoke. GLASSON CONCEDES BRISBANE: Liberal National Party candidate Bill Glasson has conceded to Labor’s Terri Butler in the by-election for Kevin Rudd’s Brisbane seat of Griffith. Dr Glasson, a former Austral- ian Medical Association pre- sident, said he has failed to win the south Brisbane seat for a second time after Sat- urday’s by-election. ‘‘I congratulate Ms Butler on her victory, and wish her well as she takes on the respons- ibility of representing the people of Griffith in federal parliament,’’ Dr Glasson said in a statement yesterday. SHOCKS PREDICTED CANBERRA: Prime Minister Tony Abbott says there are more economic shocks to come but Australian busi- ness will bounce back. He told colleagues in Can- berra there had been econ- omic shocks and there would be more to come. But he said the Government would not abandon the truth that ‘‘governments don’t cre- ate jobs, businesses do’’.
