Gittanythrowninto jailSYDNEY: Simon Gittany —jealous, possessive andutterly without remorse —will spend at least 18 years injail after throwing his fian-cee Lisa Harnum to herdeath from a 15th-floorSydney balcony.

As Supreme Court JudgeLucy McCallum deliveredboth the sentence and thecharacter assessment, shealso took aim at 40-year-oldGittany’s ‘‘flamboyant’’ andattention-seeking relation-ship with new girlfriendRachelle Louise.

Ms Louise, who bears astrong resemblance to herboyfriend’s murderedfiancee, was not in court tohear the sentence.

Justice McCallum said Git-tany’s relationship with MsLouise had been conducted‘‘very much in the publiceye’’ and in the knowledgethat she could be an import-ant witness to his character.

She said Gittany encour-

aged Ms Louise’s paid tele-vision appearances becausehe thought the publicitywould help his case.

As part of her televisiondeal, Ms Louise last nightsaid she was optimisticGittany would not do thesentence. ‘‘I still want to beoptimistic in a sense that Ibelieve he won’t do it,’’ shesaid in a statement given tothe Seven Network.

‘‘I truly do believe he hasbeen wrongfully convicted.’’

During the trial, the courtheard Gittany was controll-ing and had installed CCTVcameras inside their apart-ment and used a computerprogram to monitor MsHarnum’s text messages andher emails.

The judge imposed a maxi-mum of 26 years for the mur-der of Ms Harnum in July2011. Gittany will be eligiblefor parole in May 2031 but hislawyers say he maintains hisinnocence and will appeal.
