Joose, Barbara Papa, Do you love me?* J818p

(“The father fighting a lion to protect his son is particular to this Maasai

community -- as other societies might not face such challenges -- and this makes

the impact of the book much stronger. The book's strength, ironically, is also its

greatest weakness. The author plays on every conceivable stereotype of the

Maasai people, herding cattle, warding off attacks by wild animals such as

hyenas and lions, warriors leaping in full headgear, a hot climate, and father and

son dressed in red robes and sandals. The illustrations heighten these

perceptions. The author does mention that this Maasai community lives in the

Mara, but fails to note that Maasai life on the Mara is not illustrative of the

lifestyle of all the Maasai, or of all the people in Kenya. If the book is intended

for a young reader, making this distinction is important. Overall, the book does

emphasize love as a basic human need. This humanizes the Maasai, and reminds

us all, of our common humanity.” Herine Ogutha (2005)Africa Access Review)
