Jesus grew, obeyed, listened and learned.
And then tell them what you can do
to make God smile like Jesus did.
Jesus grew and became a man.
Jesus' life made God smile with joy.
What can we do to make God smile with joy?
Jesus was God’s only son, and he was very special. When he was a boy, he went to the temple church to listen and learn about his Father’s words. When Jesus spoke, he surprised everyone, even the teachers. They couldn’t believe a boy so young had learned so much. As Jesus grew up, he talked to people, and he told them about God’s love.
Jesus had three friends named Peter, James and John. James and John were brothers. They were some of Jesus’ closest friends, but even they didn’t understand how special Jesus was. One day God showed them.
Jesus led his three friends up a high mountain. Suddenly, Jesus’ face and clothes began to glow like the sun. Peter, James and John just stood there. They couldn’t believe it! They had never seen Jesus that way before! Then they heard the voice of God saying, “This is my dearly loved son, who brings me great joy. Listen to him!”
When they heard the voice, they fell facedown on the ground. They were terrified! Jesus knelt down, touched them, and said “Get up. And don’t be afraid.” So they got up and began walking back down the mountain with Jesus.
God always knew how special Jesus was, and three of his friends found out too.

Group Activity Time provides an active learning experience to review lesson concepts.
What you need: nothing
What you do: For this activity the children will work together as a team to put
themselves in size order, including classroom helpers. When everyone is lined up
they can see the transformation of getting bigger.
What you say: Lately we have been learning about Jesus as a child. But today
in our story Jesus had grown up – he was big. We learned about Jesus going to the
top of a mountain with three of his friends. What happened while he was there? He
started to glow! And whose voice did they hear from heaven? God’s voice. He said
he was pleased with Jesus. Jesus made him smile! What can you do to make God
smile?
What you need: eyedropper, paper wrapped straws
What you do: Gather the children around the table. Remove the paper off of a
straw by bunching it up as tight as possible so when it comes off the straw it looks
like an accordion. Don’t stretch it out. Carefully add 1 drop of water to bunched
straw wrapper and watch it grow. Keep adding drops of water until it stops. Repeat
with another straw wrapper.
What you say: Today in our story we learned about Jesus going to the top of a
mountain with three of his friends. What happened while he was there? He started
to glow! The way he looked changed, just like our straw wrappers changed. And
whose voice did they hear from heaven? God’s voice. He said he was pleased with
Jesus. Jesus made him smile! What can you do to make God smile?
What you need: 2 bags of adult clothes (each with a shirt, tie, hat, pants, etc.)
What you do: Divide the children into two teams and give each team a bag of
dress-up clothes. At the signal, the two beginning children will race to put on their
team’s clothes. Once the clothes are on, they will then hop to a designated spot on
the opposite side of the classroom and then hop back. The next child in line will then
help the first child get off the dress-up clothes and put them on himself. Repeat until
all of the children have run the relay.
What you say: Today in our story we learned about Jesus going to the top of a
mountain with three of his friends. What happened while he was there? He started
to glow! His appearance changed, just like our appearance changed when we put
on different clothes in our game. And whose voice did they hear from heaven?
God’s voice. He said he was pleased with Jesus. Jesus made him smile! What can
you do to make God smile?
Thumbprint Caterpillars
Supplies:
paper markers or crayons washable stamp pads
Option #1 – BIGGEST TO SMALLEST
Option #2 – WATER HELPS YOU GROW
Option #3 – DRESS UP RELAY
Directions:
1. Pass out a piece of paper to each child.
2. Using one thumb, the child will press his thumb onto the stamp pad and then onto the paper. Repeat and make each adjacent thumbprint in a straight line across the page to create the caterpillar’s body. The thumbprints need to be touching.
3. After the prints have dried sufficiently, the children may add legs, eyes, mouth and antenna to their caterpillars.
