Read to the Dogs - Children who read independently may sign up for a 15 minute session on 2 Oct to read to a dog from 0900-1015 at the AMR Library or from 1100-1215 at the SGT Yano Li-brary. This program improves children‟s reading and communication through the powerful method of reading to a trained service dog. Call to reserve a session. Sessions available on a first come, first served basis. Call 833-4851 to register at AMR or 655-8002 to register at SGT Yano Library.

Award Winning Reads at SGT Yano Library - This program is for children 8 to 12 years of age and features books that have either won or are nominated for awards. This quarter‟s book selection will be from Hawaii‟s own Nene Awards. Read Found by Margaret Peterson Haddix and share your opinion, good or bad, on 5 Oct from 1800-1845.

Ukulele Workshop at AMR Community Center - Mr. Steven Cupchoy will present a ukulele work-shop at AMR Community Center on 5 Oct and on 6 Oct at the SGT Yano Library. Both sessions run from 1730-1900. The workshops will provide some basic information on the history of the ukulele in Hawaii with demonstrations on how the ukulele is played. Please call the AMR Library at 833-4851 or the SGT Yano Library at 655-8002 to register or for more information.

Pumpkin Carving Contest at Hale Ikena – The Hale Ikena will provide free pumpkins and carving supplies to the first 15 keiki under 10 years of age on 14 Oct. Children should be accompanied and supervised by a parent or adult at all times. Those over age 10 who wish to participate in the contest are welcome to bring in their own pumpkins. The contest will start at 1800 and the judging will begin at 1900. This will be the first night the new Keiki Menu will be featured! For more information call 438-1974.

Zombie Prom - Why do girls love bad boys? Come enjoy a romantic rock and roll love story to find the answers. Performances will be held on Fridays and Saturdays at 1930 and Sundays at 1500, 15-31 Oct, at Fort Shafter‟s Richardson Theatre. The performance is about a girl who loves ghoul rock and roll. Off Broadway musical is set in the atomic 1950s at Enrico Fermi High where the law is laid down by a zany, tyrannical principal. Pretty senior Toffee has fallen for the class bad boy. Family pressure forces her to end the romance and he charges off on his motorcycle to the nuclear waste dump. He returns glowing and determined to reclaim Toffee‟s heart. He still wants to graduate, but most of all he wants to take Toffee to the prom. The principal orders him to drop dead while a scandal reporter seizes on him as the freak du jour. History comes to his rescue while a tuneful selection of original songs in the style of the 50s hits keeps the action rocking across the stage.

Afterschool at SGT Yano Library - Elementary age children are invited to enjoy a Back to School program with The Librarian from the “Spooky Stories” on 20 Oct, 1500-1545. This is a FREE program; registration is not required.

Halloween Fair at AMR Library - Princesses, pirates, zombies, werewolves and vampires are in-vited to a Halloween Fair. Show off your great costumes, dance the Monster Mash, spin the giant trick or treat wheel, play games, and make a craft. Ghoulishly great fun for children of all ages will be available from 1500-1600 on 26 Oct at the AMR Library, 27 Oct at the SGT Yano Library or 28 Oct at the Fort Shafter Library. The SGT Yano Library will also offer picture taking opportunities in the Haunted Pumpkin Patch. For additional information call the AMR Library at 839-2821, the Fort Shafter Library at 438-9521, or the SGT Yano Library at 655-8002.

Halloween Lunch Spooktacular at Hale Ikena - It‟s the Hale Ikena‟s Hawaiian Luau Buffet with a twist. Show up in costume for lunch on Friday, 29 Oct from 1100-1500 and receive a FREE desert with purchase! Call 438-1974 for more information.

Pokai TRY II at PARC - If you missed the first Pokai TRY, you don‟t want to miss this one on Sat, 30 Oct. This is a great event for those who want to participate in a TRY-athlon. The order of events for this go around will be SWIM 1000m, RUN 1000m and PADDLE 1000m. The paddle portion of the race will be completed in the knee or prone position, NOT Stand-up Paddleboard. Contact the Schofield Barracks Outdoor Recreation Center for paddleboard rentals at 655-0143. Submit entry forms and fees to the PARC Business Office or to the Outdoor Recreation Center no later than 25 Oct at 1700. Halloween Bash at Schofield Barracks Bowling Center – The Schofield Bowling Center will host a Halloween Bash on Sat, 30 Oct from 1900-2400. The Children‟s Costume Contest will start promptly at 1900 and the Adult Costume Contest will begin at 2200. Come party with a live DJ and enjoy games and prizes all night long. Blue Star Card Activities for Spouses of Deployed Soldiers

Walk off the Wait: Koko Head Trail - Join us on our latest Blue Star Card hike up Koko Head Trail on Thurs, 14 Oct. Climb up the railroad ties of an old abandoned World War II incline tram to the summit and see spectacular views of the Windward side of the island. On a clear day you can even see Molokai and Maui! Free transportation will leave from the Schofield Barracks Bowling Center parking lot at 0800 and re-turn around 1400. This hike is considered a 4 star rating on a 5 star scale. The trail is not stroller accessible. Make sure to pack sunscreen and plenty of water! For more information or to register call 655-0002 or 655-0112/3. Deadline to register for this event is 6 Oct.

Big R: Mystery Dinner (Town Center of Mililani) - Join your Blue Star Card friends in celebrating another month of deployment complete on Tues, 26 Oct from 1700-2100 at the Town Center of Mililani. Enjoy an evening of fun, food and mystery as you put your detective skills to work to find out who done it! This is an adult only event and childcare will be provided. Spaces are limited. Pink Bingo Luncheon

The Hui O‟ Wahine Pretty in Pink Bingo Luncheon will be held on Thursday, 14 Oct at the Hale Ikena, Fort Shafter.

Doors open at 1030 for shopping with vendors and the

luncheon starts at 1100. Dress up as your favorite

princess or in any Halloween costume and join us for some BINGO fun! Reservations are

ASYMCA Fieldtrip to Aloun Farms Pumpkin Patch - Come join us for a pumpkin-picking good time on Tuesday, 12 Oct, 1000, at Aloun Farms. While at Aloun Farms, you will learn about farming, take a hayride and pick your own pumpkin! The cost is $7.50 per participant. Contact your local ASYMCA to sign up.

Spookfest - Join us for Spookfest on Friday, 29 Oct, 1730-1900. This fall festival is created especially for children up to age 5 and their Families. Come in costume and enjoy games, face painting, crafts and treats. The cost is $3 in advance, $5 at the door. Proceeds benefit ASYMCA programs.

Dance Classes at Wheeler ASYMCA - “Simply Ballroom” taught by Chris Casely will not take place for the month of October, but will resume in November. We will offer classes for children ages 6-18 on the second and fourth Fridays of the month (12 and 26 Nov) from 1600-1700. Classes for adults will be offered on the second and fourth Saturdays of the month (13 and 27) from 1000-1100. The classes cover the basic technique and patterns in the Ameri-can style of ballroom dance and are $10 per class, per person. Participants are not required to have a partner. Please do not wear slippers.

The Children’s Waiting Room - We offer onsite childcare for healthy children while their parents or siblings have medical appointments in any of the Schofield Clinics or at Tripler Medical Center. There is no set fee for this service, but your donations keep this program running.
