Promotions, New Baby Reapers and other Good News

WELCOME NEW REAPER BABIES!

PHYSICAL FITNESS EXCELLENCE- PVT Westbrook (2nd PLT) scored a 333 on the Company APFT on 30 October. Because of his outstanding performance, he was awarded an Army Achievement Medal by the Battalion Commander and a four day pass. Anyone who scores a 300 or higher is awarded with extra time off, so get your Reaper in shape!

REAPER READINESS

3rd Platoon at PTA

From the Commander...

This past month the Soldiers of Alpha Company 1-14 IN conducted training at the Pohukaloa Training

Area located on the Big Island of Hawaii. This training was most valuable in preparing the unit for deploy-

ment readiness. Reapers conducted a platoon live fire, squad live fire, platoon situational training exercise

(STX), Stryker Gunnery, and multiple flat ranges.

The platoon live fire gave the Soldiers confidence in their weapons and their fellow Soldiers. In the

shoot house, the Soldiers were required to engage targets within feet or even inches from their battle

buddy. This built great trust and unity within the platoons.

During the squad live fire, Reapers worked in a 9 man squad to tactically and effectively engage and

destroy enemy targets. The training was conducted over rough terrain and the Soldiers’ performance was

outstanding.

Stryker Gunnery gave the Soldiers a chance to effectively use the Stryker’s weapon system known as

the Remote Weapon System (RWS). The vehicle crews engaged targets with the .50 caliber machine gun

and the MK19 grenade launcher. Some of the Reapers already had experience shooting the RWS, but for

some it was a new test. After two solid days of shooting day and night, all the crews were qualified and

confident in their RWS shooting ability.

Platoon STX gave the Platoon a chance to show what the Soldiers had learned the two weeks prior. The

platoons met with a local leader of a simulated out-post in Iraq. From there the platoon was required to

conduct a convoy to a neighboring town and conduct dismounted patrols. This led them to search for a

cache site. They also conducted the task of reacting to an IED and recovery drills at the end of the STX

lane. A lot was thrown at them in a short period of time and the leaders were forced to make quick

decisions.

Throughout the 3 weeks of training your Soldiers shot thousands of rounds of ammunition, drove

countless hours in the Strykers, walked several miles and most importantly learned some good lessons.

Overall, Reaper Company did an outstanding job and improved everyday.

The Stress Shoot Range

Stryker’s in Action

Welcome to the first edition of Reaper Readiness. The intent of this newsletter is to keep the Reaper

Families in the loop on the happenings of Alpha Company. Our goal is to send a newsletter out by email

every month with information regarding recent training that your loved one has participated in, recent

Reaper accomplishments, new baby announcements (there are a lot of pregnant wives!), and future

training events. If there is something specific you would like to see or read about in these newsletters

please email me, my wife Alexa, or tell your husband to pass it up the chain of command.

Personnel forums slated

FORT SHAFTER — U.S. Army-Pacific and the Installation Management Command are

partnering to hold Office of Personnel Management Informational Forums, hosted by the

Federal Executive Board, at Schofield Barracks and Fort Shafter among other locations.

Questions/concerns regarding the recent National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA)

legislation will be addressed. Topics to be discussed include: transition from COLA to Locality

Pay for Hawaii, the Federal Employees Retirement System (FERS) Sick Leave changes

and impact on retirement. Representatives from the Office of Personnel Management and the

Federal Executive Board will be present.

The panel members will not be able to provide specific information on National Security

Performance System (NSPS) and the Defense Civilian Intelligence Personnel Systems

(DCIPS). The NDAA did abolish NSPS and the Department of Defense is responsible for the

transition; therefore, the 'next step' is not known at this time. The language of the NDAA did not

repeal or terminate the DCIPS; however it does suspend certain provisions until Dec. 31, 2010.

DoD is currently working on procedures to follow in the coming year.

Department of Army Civilians are encouraged to submit questions to be addressed at

the forums no later than noon, Nov. 13, at mailto:[email protected].

Approximately 10 public forums are being coordinated with other federal agencies to take place

the week of Nov. 30-Dec. 4, locations, dates and times to be announced.

• DoD Civilians on the staff of installation support services/offering support services to service members and their family (Airman and Family Readiness Centers, Army Community Service, Family Assistance Centers, etc.) when translation of documents if for their own, individual situation (as described above). Civilian service eligibility does not include face-to-face consultation, or telephonic or online Short-Term Solution-Focused consultation. What documents may be translated? Qualifying documents Only certain kinds of documents may be translated by our document translation services. We refer to these as “qualifying documents.” Qualifying documents are legal documents such as:

- leases

- marriage licenses

- adoption paperwork that is required by the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS)

- birth certificates

- school transcripts What documents may not be translated? Nonqualifying documents Only the kinds of documents described above qualify for translation through our document translation services. Documents that do not qualify for our translation services include:

• Medical. Our document translation services may not be used for discussion or delivery of information related to medical issues. Birth certificates, however, qualify for our translation services.

• Other. Requests to use the document translation service that are not for an individual service member or family member and are not for qualifying documents are outside the scope of Military OneSource document translation services. For example, flyers advertising installation events or family support program brochures may not be translated. How long will it take to translate my document? If you follow the process below by sending your document via the preferred method (e-mail), and if your document is less than 5,000 words and a qualifying document such as birth certificate or marriage license, you will receive your translation back within a few business days. Documents that are nonstandard in nature, or are not in good condition, or are longer than 5,000 words generally require more time. There is a 20-page limit per qualifying document. How do I get started? Call a Military OneSource consultant at 1-800-342-9647. (From outside the U.S. and Canada, call 1-800-3429-6477 or call collect 484-530-5908.) Be sure to have the document that you want to have translated with you when you make this call. Your consultant will then do the following:

• Explain how to connect with and send documents to Federal News Service, Inc. (FNS) for translation of official documents.

Page 19: Golden Dragons Weekly Binder 20 November 2009

• Ask you several questions about your document and complete a Request for Translation Services Form.

• Open a case for you and give you the case number.

• Send a copy of the completed Request for Translation Services Form to you. (You will attach this form when you Fax, e-mail, or mail your qualifying documents or documents to Federal News Service, Inc. The consultant will also send a copy of the form to Federal News Service by e-mail to authorize your use of the service.) Keep in mind that case numbers can be used only once. If you need translation services in the future for a different qualifying document, please call again for a new case number and form. What if my document isn’t a “qualifying” document? Documents that do not meet the above eligibility criteria may be considered for translation support if there are other available free resources. Military OneSource will explore community and government resources to assist you. Many times manufacturers, educational services, and community agencies provide educational materials in numerous languages. Your Military OneSource consultant will explain how we can help with your request when the document is not a qualifying document. Language Interpretation Services from Military OneSource

Overview

Understanding language interpretation services from Military OneSource.

Who is eligible? Who is not eligible? What if a situation doesn't qualify for the interpretation services? Other resources

To allow our consultants to communicate with military family members who do not speak the English language, Military OneSource provides simultaneous language interpretation services. This interpretation service, which is provided by telephone, ensures that language will not be a barrier to family members seeking and receiving Military OneSource services. We make every effort to honor all language preferences. The language interpretation services are available to our consultants 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

Who is eligible?

Military OneSource interpretation services are intended to facilitate the providing of Military OneSource services to individual military family members who do not speak the English language. For example, a non-English-speaking military spouse may use the interpretation service to talk with a Military OneSource consultant about how to find child care programs in her community, or to discuss the concerns she may have about a spouse who has returned from combat.

To qualify, these family members must be family members of service members who are eligible to use the Military OneSource program. These service members include:

Active-duty service members in the Army, Marine Corps, Navy, and Air Force and their immediate family members.

National Guard and Reserve members -- regardless of activation status -- and their immediate family members (includes members of the Individual Ready Reserve).

Separating service members and their immediate family members for up to six months following their separation.

Who is not eligible?

Our language interpretation service is not a stand-alone service. It is used only in connection with providing usual Military OneSource services in the context of a Military OneSource case.

Situations for which the language interpretation service may not be used include:

Page 21: Golden Dragons Weekly Binder 20 November 2009

Situations outside the context of a Military OneSource case. Requests to use the interpretation service for reasons outside the context of a Military OneSource case, or by third-party advocates for reasons outside a Military OneSource case, are outside the scope of this service. For example, a Family Readiness Group leader may not use the interpretation service to contact a non-English speaking spouse.

Medical. The interpretation services may not be used for discussion or delivery of information related to medical issues.

What if a situation doesn't qualify for the interpretation services?

Situations that do not meet the eligibility requirements may be considered for interpretation support if there are other available free resources. Military OneSource will explore community and government resources to assist you. Your Military OneSource consultant will explain how we can help with your request when the situation does not qualify for Military OneSource interpretation services.

If a military family member or military family support staff needs interpretation services that are outside the scope of this service, consultants will offer alternate resources that can assist them with their need.
