SOCIAL EVENTS COORDINATORS: BARB PATTISON & JUDY ARCHBOLD

Our summer months are busy ones what with riding, vacaons, and rallies, it is difficult to aend all of our social events. However, we have planned a couple of dinners at local restaurants; one on Tuesday, Aug. 16th at 5:30 PM at the Waterfront Restaurant in Napanee. We’ll be meeng at Timmie’s on Bell Blvd. at 5:00 for those wishing to ride as a group. Our other dinner is on Tuesday,

Sept. 13th at Chuck’s Roadhouse in Belleville at 6:30 PM.The next ride and social event is on Aug. 7th, our Chapter B-B-Q. Ron & Esther Nowell have once again offered their beauful yard to us and instead of a ride, there will be a pontoon boat ride around Skootamaa Lake. Ron tells me that he has four boats lined up and can accommodate up to 50 people. Sounds great! Details will follow. On August 13th Don Collins will lead a ride to the RCAC Ontario Regiment Tank Museum in Oshawa followed by dinner at Teddy’s Res-taurant. We’ll depart from Tim Horton’s on Bell Blvd. at 8:00 AM.On Saturday, September 17th we have our annual Observaon Ride hosted again this year by Bill & Lois Tryan. Details will follow at our August meeng. If you’ve not signed up for these events, its not too late. Please contact Jude at 613-969-0429 or at [email protected]. We hope youcan aend some of these events.Safe Riding Near & Far,

Great Moments in Courtroom Cross-Examination

(These questions were asked by one Canadian lawyer during different court cases)

· And what colour were the blue jeans?

· How long have you known your brother?

· Were you alone or by yourself?

· How long have you been a French Canadian?

REAL QUESTIONS TOURISTS ASK ABOUT CANADA

(Mostly of tour guides at Banff National Park)

· How do the elk know to cross at the “Elk Crossing Signs”?

· At what elevation does an elk become a moose?

· Are the bears with collars tame?

· Is there anywhere I can see the bears pose?

· Is it OK to keep an open package of bacon on our picnic table or should I store it in our tent?

· I saw an animal on the way to Banff today. Could you tell me what it was?

· Are there birds in Canada?

· Did I miss the turnoff for Canada

· Where does Alberta end and Canada begin?

RENDEZVOUS 2016LOTS OF FUN!

57 tickets were sold on our chapter basket which was won by the Maryland chapter so I have a $57 cheque from Re-gion to ON-Q. We tied for first place (twice) in the trivia contest and came in second place in the modified mouse trap car race, but did not do so well overall in the chapter challenge.A very good time was had by everyone who attended. Next year's Rendezvous will be held in Pembroke so we should be able to get lots of people from ON-Q to attend.

From Riders Ed

I was reading the Insight Newsletter from GWRRA Head Office the other day when it came in and it looks like there are going to be some updates and changes to the seminars with a possible rollout after Wing Ding. So hopefully this fall and winter when we can't ride we (Seminar Presenters) will have some new material to work with and bring everyone up to speed. We are looking at what some

of the other Chapters are up to with their Education and we may offer something similar to what they are doing i.e. having a one day or evening seminar event slash coffee night where we can present two or three seminars at one time.I have also been in conversation with Mark and Theresa Fleury, from Chapter Y, who are also GWRRA First Aid Presenters to come down to our Chapter to put on the GWRRA version which will take eight hours. The cost is $ 40.00 for the course and will qualify you in First Aid, CPR and Defibrillator for two years. The cost of the course is a lot cheaper than the other providers by a significant amount. If inter-ested please fire me off an e-mail so we can get the ball rolling.P.S. Please check your tires before riding in this heat. I have been checking mine a little more often and found there has been some varia-tion in my tire pressures and have had to adjust them accordingly.

Until next time Ride Safe.

Wedding DisruptionAt a wedding ceremony, the minister asked if anyone had anything to say concerning the union of the bride and groom. It was their time to stand up and talk, or forever hold their peace. The moment of utter silence was broken by a young beautiful woman carrying a child. She started walking toward slowly toward the minister.

Everything quickly turned to chaos. The bride slapped the groom. The groom's mother fainted. The groomsmen started giving each other looks and wondering how best to help save the situation.

The minister asked the woman, "Can you tell us why you came forward? What do you have to say?"

The woman replied, "We can't hear in the back."

S ummer weather must be good for our health. All seems well with everyone. Terry Archbold’s vertigo has cleared enough for him to ride the bike again and the rest of us seem to only be bothered with being old;

aches & pains and all that. Here's hoping good health continues to follow us down summer roads. Here is a recipe for tasty B-B-Q’d Chicken Kabobs.

Jude

SUNSHINE PAGE: JUDY ARCHBOLD

Ingredients:

1 lb. boneless, skinless chicken breasts cut into 1½ in. pieces.2 cups 1½ in. fresh pineapple chunks1 each: red & green pepper, cut into 1½ in. chunks.½ cup Kraft Original B-B-Q Sauce.3 tbsp. frozen orange juice concentrate, thawed.

Method:

Preheat grill to medium high heat. Using 8 long wooden skewers, (2 side by side for each kabob), thread chicken alternately with pineapple and peppers onto skewers to make 4 kabobs.Mix B-B-Q sauce and juice concentrate; brush some of the sauce mixture onto the kabobs.Grill 8-10 min. or until chicken is cooked through, turning and brushing occasionally with the remaining sauce mixture.

Yield: 4 servings, 1 kabob each. For more people just double the ingredients and let everyone thread their own skewers.NOTE: Soak wooden skewers in water 30 min. before using. Wrap ends with foil before grilling to help prevent them from burning.

T he 401 is cool at six am, even in July. This is a solo trip, Doris can’t come this me. I want to catch the 7:30 ferry to Wolf Island so I leave early. The ferry is not much faster than Ivy Lea, unless you arrive just as the boat is loading. It seems like more fun though. I arrive early, and the morning lineup is forming as the Wolf Islander hums across the bay from its night-me berth on

the island. I get waved on first and run up the front of the boat and slip the bike into the nook in the corner, out of the space normally occupied by four-wheelers. A Mercedes-Benz stops beside me and the morning rush piles on behind, a variety of cars, service vans and an eighteen wheeler.

The boat shudders into moon and in a few minutes she turns into a sff west wind which srs white-caps off the lake. I lean on the railing watching the Murney tower recede into the limestone mosaic that is Kingston, ll a shower of water crashes over the side and I scurry for cover on the leeward side of the Mercedes. The people in the Mercedes get a chuckle out of this and we strike up a conversa-on. They are from Germany, touring North America, now heading for the States.

Eventually we enter the lee of Wolf Island and the wind and the white-caps abate. I get out a small rag to wipe the water off the seat and wind-screen. The lady in the Mercedes calls me over and hands me a small white towel, which looks remarkably like something out of a motel. I get most of the water off the bike along with the morning’s collecons of bugs. I return the towel, but she insists that I keep it.

The William Darryl is warming up for its first trip of the day to Cape Vincent. I arrive at the head of the first load, I get to wait ll last this me, parking in the last crevice on the humped deck, with just enough room for the gate to close. The white caps are somewhat smaller on this side, but the swell keeps me leaning on the bike as the lile ferry heaves across the straight into the harbor on the U.S. side. Aer a quick chat with the customs agent I park in front of the hotel for breakfast.

The run down the east end of Lake Ontario is familiar aer many trips but I usually see it in the evening, so a morning run is some-what refreshing. Different things are happening in the morning, as the rural community gets in gear for another busy day. It is aer breakfast on the farm now, and here and there I see tractors, trucks and harvesng equipment moving into acon as I glide by.

I lean around a long curve, a bit over the speed limit and approach a cluster of buildings; house, barn, and various out-buildings that represent the sum total of several generaons of a farm family. There has been rain recently and the barn-yard is a quagmire as the farmer on a tractor emerges from the mud to swing into my lane on the road. Evidently he did not see me quickly approaching around the curve. Not a problem, for there is not traffic coming so I swerve le a few feet and surprise him as I suddenly materialize at his side. Just as I pull over the tractor hits high gear and a shower of mud starts to fly off the wheel in a shower erupng directly in my path. All I can do is duck behind the windscreen and drive through it, splaering the bike and myself with mud.

Wait a minute, these old farm-boy nostrils tell me that this is not mud. This is pure, unadulterated cow-shit. Hol-stein. Clover fed. It is all over the windscreen, all over my jeans and jacket. I just keep motoring, not wanng to stop within sight of the farmer who must be busng a gut by now. A mile down the road I stop and dig out the already damp motel towel and clean up as best I can. It will dry soon and the smell won’t last long aer that. In a few minutes I am on the road again. The miles ck by and I can sll smell cow-dung. The bike begins to spuer and I switch on reserve, sll smelling cow-dung. I was sure I got it all. Ten miles later I stop for gas at Sandy Creek, and as I get off the bike I can sll smell cow-dung. When I go into the store to pay for the gas the lady at the counter looks a lile puzzled but says nothing. I can sll smell cow-dung. Outside I take off my jacket and there it is: a teaspoon sized turd under the collar strap, reeking quietly. With a lile help from the windshield washer bucket I get rid of the offending reminder of my agricultural encounter. By the me I get to Oswego the smell is gone, and I turn down county road 8 past a refreshing clump of lilacs, heading south.
