Message from Monsignor René Mathieu: (1) All are welcome to the Annual Good Shepherd Parish Picnic at St. Philip in Lyman this Sunday, September 10, Noon-2:30 pm. Hamburgers, hotdogs and beverages will be provided but parishioners are invited to bring a (peanut-free) dessert or salad to share. You may also want to bring a lawn chair for your comfort. There will be entertainment for children. Rain or shine. (2) In the United States, September 11 will

always be an anniversary of both horrifying events and heroic sacrifice. We pray the Prince of Peace will guide all peoples to desire and work tirelessly for peaceful co-existence on our fragile planet. (3) Richard Huot and others will be ordained to the permanent diaconate by Bishop Robert Deeley on Saturday, September 16 at the Cathedral in Portland, beginning at 10:00 am. All parishioners are welcome to partici-pate. Richard has worked very hard to achieve this goal and we rejoice with him and his wife, Patricia. I look forward to his diaconal ministry in the parish. (4) Bishop Robert Deeley will be the chief celebrant at the 11:00 am Mass next Sunday in St. Joseph Church, kicking off the 25th anniversary of Saint James School. Following the Mass, an open house and reception will be held at the school located on 25 Graham Street. The event also serves as a celebration of over 100 years of Catholic education in the Biddeford/Saco area. (5) We have begun our fall/winter schedule of Masses. At Saint Brendan in Biddeford Pool, a Saturday 5:30 pm Mass will continue through October 7 (Columbus Day weekend). This coming Wednesday, September 13, the summertime 8 am Mass at St. Margaret in Old Orchard Beach will be replaced by an 8:30 am Mass at St. James School in Biddeford to benefit our Catholic school students. Also at St. Margaret: the summer Sunday Mass schedule (8 am & 9:30 am) concludes this weekend; we return to the usual weekend schedule next week September 16/17 (4 pm, 8:30 am, 10:30 am). (6) The cluster plan that became fully effective in July 2010 is facing several challenges. You may remember that the plan counted on a retired priest to do the two summertime Masses at St. Brendan. We also counted on a French-speaking retired priest to do the 8 am Sunday Mass at St. Joseph. When we added/resumed the 4:30 pm Mass at St. Philip, my presumption and that of the pastoral council was that a retired priest would do this Mass through much of the year. I have every intention of finding a way to maintain the current schedule, but I will bring the matter to the pastoral council later this month to consider how we can continue to do so. (7) We are almost there! As of August 31, Good Shepherd Parish had reached 98% of our goal for the 2017 diocesan Appeal. Parishioners have pledged $187,665 of our $190,745 goal. We can do it! By the way, the statewide appeal has also reached 98% of goal. If you have not yet pledged, please do so as soon as you are able. There are pledge forms at each church location or at the parish office. The Diocese of Portland (the entire State of Maine) is considered a mission diocese so I invite visiting out-of-staters to con-sider even a small pledge on our behalf. Because our parish sponsors a Catholic school, we will receive a “kickback” based on our total pledges. (8) A possible “Joy in Action” for this week based on Pope Francis’ apostolic exhortation on the joy of the family, Amoris Laetitae: Pray for comfort and strength for those struggling with the challenges of advanced age. (9) Thank You of the Week: To parishioners who fashioned screens around the pew level awning windows at St. Joseph Church, permitting cool air to enter during summertime nights while keeping out bats and birds (why didn’t someone think of that 100 years ago?)! Thank you!

JOKES PRIESTS CAN TELL, Vol. 8 - Msgr. Tonne: John and Dave were hiking when they spotted a mountain lion staring at them. John froze in his tracks, but Dave sat down on a log, tore off his hiking boots, pulled on a pair of running shoes from his backpack and hurriedly began to put them on. “For crying out loud, you can’t outrun a mountain lion!” John hissed. “I don’t have to,” shrugged Dave. “I just have to outrun you.”

!THANK YOU! BACK TO SCHOOL BACKPACKS: Thanks to the INCREDIBLE GENEROSITY of the

parishioners and friends of Good Shepherd Parish, the Social Justice Commission collected and distributed 131 BACKPACKS,

an increase of 50 over last year. The bulk of the packs were delivered to a State Foster Care social worker and the parish of

Our Lady of the Snows in Dexter, Maine. Smaller numbers of packs were given to St. James School, elementary schools in Lyman & Day-ton, Seeds of Hope and Sweetser. Ironically, we won't see the bright,

happy faces of the children receiving the backpacks, but we can imagine the joy they will feel when they are given a new backpack

full of the supplies they will need for the new school year!

Reaching Family & Friends: Evangelization Through The Good, The True, And The Beautiful.

Join us beginning Sept. 25th Monday evenings, 6:30 pm

at Most Holy Trinity for a 7-week presentation and workshop facilitated by Dr. Bill Martel.

One in five Americans are Catholic; almost as many are ex-Catholics. In fact, half of all children baptized into our church will leave it.

These aren't cold statistics. They're burning realities many of us live with each day. Family members, friends, co-workers, & neighbors have

left their first love. We, the body of Christ, are a body injured. The pain is real.

We are, however, not without Hope. Our Lord made every person alive to be irresistibly drawn to three things: Truth, Goodness, and

Beauty. These inexhaustible gifts can be used to transform our conver-sations, our lives, and our loves - and ultimately our relationships

with those we love who have wandered away. Join us this fall as we dive deep into the Good, the True, and the

Beautiful, how the church for two thousand years has evangelized the world through these gifts from God, and the difference they can make

to us trying to reach those we love. Register online at Goodshepherdparish.us or call the main office 282-3321.

"PREVENTING ELDER ABUSE AND FINANCIAL EXPLOITATION." at Most Holy Trinity Hall.

According to research, one out of every five American citizens over the age of 65 has been victimized by some type of financial rip-off.

With 10,000 American citizens reaching the age of 65 every day and 37% of seniors surveyed reporting that they were currently being

pitched to by people calling or mailing and asking them for money, it is important for all of us to learn how to protect ourselves from

unscrupulous individuals. This program will provide information and resources on how to identify possible elder abuse and financial

exploitation, steps to take to protect yourself and others, and available resources to help. The program will be presented by Judith Shaw,

Administrator of the Maine Office of Securities. Donations to food pantries at all our churches: This week: cereal / powdered milk

On Sept. 13, the school Mass at St. James School will begin at 8:30 am, and continue on Wednesdays through the school year

(excepting school vacation & cancellations for snow days). The Wednesday 8:00 am Mass in OOB has ceased for now.

St. Philip of Good Shepherd Parish’s Annual Harvest Fair: Oct. 28 & 29

As you all know, our annual Harvest Fair will be held on Oct. 28 & 29. While all of the fundraisers contribute to the support of Good Shepherd Parish,

it is important for us to show that our own St. Philip community plays a meaningful part in our contribution to the parish as a whole.

Therefore the upcoming Harvest Fair is very important to all of us. It demonstrates our local church’s commitment as being a critical player in the fundraising activities of the parish. It is our statement

of just how supportive and necessary we are to the total parish.

There is a small group that has already begun working very hard on the Harvest Fair to come up with crafts, penny raffle items, food, and the

preparation of tickets. We are at the point where we really need help and support from the rest of the members of the parish. We need

more items for the penny raffle, more craft items, more baked goods for the bake sale, more treasure chest items, and generally more help in

setting up the room before the official date of Oct. 28 arrives.

We will have sign up sheets in the entry hall soon. We hope we can solicit help from many more members of St. Philip Church. Please don’t think that we don’t need you, because we do!!

As a side note, you know we have all recently received Good Shepherd Parish Christmas Fair raffle tickets to sell that represents fundraising for

the entire parish. Please remember that we have an additional raffle featured as part of this annual Harvest Fair.

Please give us a hand to make our Harvest Fair a success. Thank you, Fair Chairperson: Gisele Lynes & Co-Fair Chairperson: Donna Bilodeau

known as “New and Like New” at the Christmas Fair. What had happened in the past is that we received calls from folks who wanted to

donate items that they could not sell at their yard sale. The hope was that the parish would have better luck selling these items at the Christ-

mas Fair. What we found is that we did not have any more luck than our parishioners. Thus, we ended up having to dispose of many of these

items, sometimes at a cost to the fair. So now we are asking for items that when you donate them, they are “New to You” or would seem new

to the purchaser. We could have easily called this area a “White Elephant” area. So moving forward, if you have something of a “White Elephant” nature that once purchased at the fair will be, “New to You”,

please consider donating it to the fair. Where is the best place to find such items? Consider re-gifting something that you received as a pre-

sent and never could find a place for, use for, or reason for having. You don’t want to offend any of your friends and family. But you have the general idea, I am sure. Thank you for your continued support of the

Christmas Fair. If you have not received your Major Raffle tickets by now, be sure to contact the Parish Office by calling 282-3321 and be sure to update

your mailing address. Thank you and see you at the fair. - Dan & Denise Bastarache, 283-9310
