Message from Monsignor René Mathieu: (1) Because of the various holidays at this time of year, we have many early deadlines for sending the bulletin to print. That is why some information may seem neglected or somewhat dated during November and December. Under the circumstances, we do the best we can! (2) Father Richard Ouellette died on October 16 at the age of 67 at a hospital in Massachusetts. He retired in 2004 due to heart disease. He is fondly remembered for his service in Biddeford as parochial vicar of

St. Andre Church (1977-1979), and pastor of St. Joseph Church (1989-1993). May his soul and the souls of all the faithful departed through the mercy of God rest in peace. (3) As we observe the 13th anniversary of our perpetual adoration chapel, I commend the laity who make this possible, insuring that the Blessed Sacrament is available for adoration and prayer every hour of the day, seven days a week. This is a rare oppor-tunity in Maine. I express a special word of thanks to the Good Shepherd Sisters who provide space for the chapel in Esther House. (4) The Good Shepherd Parish Christ-mas Fair continues through this Sunday afternoon, November 13. Any outstanding major raffle tickets should not be placed in this weekend’s collection of offerings because the collection is deposited in the bank immediately after each Saturday even-ing and Sunday Mass and not opened until after the weekend. Any remaining tickets should be delivered directly to the fair in St. Joseph Church Hall. The fair continues until 1:00 pm Sunday afternoon. Beginning at 1:00 pm, winners of the various raffles will be drawn and all are invited to be present. (5) Our annual evening prayer service on All Souls Day is always a moving experience. About a hundred people gathered on November 2nd to pray for the dead, especially for the souls of parishioners, relatives and friends who died during this past year. We all feel deeply the loss of loved ones, along with their irreplaceable talents and the way they enriched our lives. We pray for their souls, consoled by the promises of our Lord and eternal life. (6) Parishioners will speak briefly at all our Masses this weekend to promote our Increased Offertory Campaign. Next weekend, November 19 & 20 is Commitment Weekend for the cam-paign. Please complete the card you received in the mail (or in church) and place it in next week’s offertory collection. (7) The annual collection of food (and money) for Thanksgiving baskets continues through Sunday, November 20. This project pro-vides much needed encouragement for those most in need in our community. (8) The Jubilee Year of Mercy concludes next Sunday. It has encouraged us to reflect on and act upon the traditional corporal and spiritual works of mercy. At the start of the year, Bishop Deeley made available special crosses to affix to church confessionals in Maine, as a reminder that the door to reconciliation chapels are doors that lead us sacramentally into the gift of the Lord’s mercy. On September 1, Pope Francis pro-posed “a complement” to the two traditional sets of seven corporal and spiritual works of mercy. “May the works of mercy also include care for our common home,” he said, explaining that as a spiritual work of mercy, care for creation “calls for a grateful con-templation of God’s world which allows us to discover in each thing a teaching which God wishes to hand on to us.” As a corporal work of mercy, he said, it “requires simple daily gestures which break with the logic of violence, exploitation and selfishness and makes itself felt in every action that seeks to build a better world.” (9) Installation of the new granite monument sign at the front of St. Joseph Church has been delayed due to a defect on the granite base. After consultation with Collette Monument, we have decided to order a replacement piece of granite. The lead time is long, but we felt that made the most sense. Thank you for your patience. (10) Thank You of the Week: to those who organized and participated in the St. James School spaghetti supper and road race November 4 & 5. Both events were very well attended. Thank you!

JOKES PRIESTS CAN TELL, Vol. 7 - Msgr. Tonne: Teacher: “Now, children, can anyone tell me why there is only one God?” Small Student: “There’s only one God because He’s everywhere and there’s no room for another one.” -Liguorian

(The following is an excerpt written & picture taken by Dave Guthro, Communications Director for the Diocese of Portland)

Students at St. James School in Biddeford gathered together on Mon., Nov. 7, to warmly welcome and thank a group of women religious

responsible for helping them to have the opportunity to receive a Catholic education. Representatives from the Servants of the Immaculate

Heart of Mary, also known as the Good Shepherd Sisters of Quebec (SCIM), visited the school and participated in a special prayer service.

The group included sisters who live in the community’s convent in Biddeford as well as members of the community’s leadership visiting from Quebec. The Sisters have been active in educating area children since the late 19th century, when they were asked to send sisters from Quebec who could speak French to Biddeford to serve as teachers at

Catholic schools. As teachers, principals, and assistants, the sisters have been looked upon as role models by generations of young people. Though

they are less in number, their commitment to Catholic education is stronger than ever. Each year, the community donates $25,000 to a schol-arship fund at St. James. “We are honored that the Good Shepherd Sisters

of Quebec are here today,” said Nancy Naimey, principal of St. James, during the service. “These sisters have contributed substantially to our

scholarship program and it enables many of our students to attend St. James School. We are so grateful. It is because of the sisters that

we are able to have our school here.” “The fact that the education continues here is very special to us,” said

Sr. Terry Gauvin, a Biddeford native who is the Provincial of the American Province of the Good Shepherd Sisters of Quebec. “As a

community, we’ve always appreciated and valued Catholic education. Catholic schools are not only the future of our Church, they are the

present of our Church.” The connection between the sisters and the students is hardly just a finan-

cial one. There is a deeper bond illustrated each month when students from the school visit the community’s convent on Pool Street. The visits include prayer, arts and crafts, snacks, singing, and a genuine affinity not

hampered by a difference in age or experience. One student even read a speech at the funeral of a sister.

Sister Theresa Rounds, the Superior General of the Good Shepherd Sisters of Quebec, was among those in attendance on Monday. Once the princi-pal of the former St. Mary School in Biddeford, she says that the sisters

also receive something very important from their dedication to the school and connection to the students. “The sisters get a

sense of hope. A sense that the future is not as bleak as the media sometimes makes it appear.

There are good people and the children, if given the chance, can lead lives that represent the

values that the Church stands for, that families stand for, that the country used to stand for.”

At the end of the service, students presented the sisters with red roses and a large heart made of paper hands. Prayers for

the sisters were written on each hand by every student in the school.

Our Theology on Tap CHANGE OF LOCATION for November is The Kerrymen Pub in Saco (512 Main St).
