Since its very earliest practice, the season of Lent has been linked to Christian discipleship. During the latter part of the fourth century, the forty days before Easter became the accepted training time for new converts. This period of Lent began with a formal entrance ceremony in which baptismal candidates were examined publicly; the bible was taught, and faith was strengthened. At the end of this season, the candidate would be baptized on Easter Sunday. This year, we are using the Season of Lent for a similar purpose. The weeks between Ash Wednesday and Easter Sunday are filled with the study and practice of 10 key spiritual actions in our Believe Study. One of the many reasons I love this 30 week discipleship experience is that it gives our church a common discipleship language. In my sermons, in our Sunday School classes, and in our daily conversations, the 10 key beliefs, practices and virtues have become a foundation of how we talk about and understand our Walk with Jesus. To become a church that is truly Growing Disciples, we need more than just a common language, though. One of the things I have learned most deeply about discipleship is the reality that each of us is different – with different personalities and different ways of relating to God. Broad discipleship programs leave many people in the same place they started … even if we want desperately to grow closer to Jesus. Our discipleship initiative team noted this same challenge. Fbc mission team to nicaragua 2016The preparation for this year’s trip to Nicaragua in June is well under-way. FBC will once again send a team to work with our friends at FBC Matagalpa as we minister with them in Santa Emila June 4-11, 2016. The initial deposit was due on Feb. 22, but there may still be time to reserve your place on this trip if you let us know right away. We have to give Delta Air Lines a final number of passengers by March 6! Please refer to the information sheet for more details.

We will again be concentrating our work in the village of Santa Emilia where FBC Matagalpa has a church plant that they support. As usual we will do some medical clinics and VBS, but as we’ve narrowed our focus to one location, we also want to find other ways to work in this community. We have already been in contact with some other groups who have worked in this community and we think there will be oth-er opportunities to work together in on other projects: (i.e.: schools, mircofinance etc). We strongly believe that God has bigger plans for us to work for Him in this community in more ways than just clinics and VBS.

Please be in prayer to see if God just might be calling YOU to join Him in Nicaragua... Recent-ly in our Believe Series at FBC our lesson and sermon were on “Total Surrender”. It just may be that God is asking you to surrender to His will and GO! Pray about it. There is an informa-tion sheet and Team application on the church website. Please contact Rhett or Tammy Weav-er if you have any questions.

If you have any yard sale items, we will have our SPrinG nicaraGua yard Sale on aPril 16, 2016. Last day for donations will be 4/6/2016. Place items under stair well in the Family Ministry Center.

Because of some changes in focus of the North American Mission Board , the director of Tahoe Resort Ministries is no longer funded.Because we at FBC believe Resort Ministries has a vital place in reaching people, we are helping finance this ministry in a small way. We hope to keep you updated on this and other Mission Investments through out the year.

Belinda serves with her husband as a missionary with Appalachian Regional Ministries in Harlan County, Kentucky. This area is one ofthe most poverty stricken areas in our country. We must preregister, make check payable to Habersham Association WMU. If you are interested please contact Janet Nix.

INTERNATIONAL MISSIONARY REENTRY RETREATBecause of downsizing at the International Mission Board, 600 families are taking early retirement. Georgia hopes to absorb 35 of these families. A Reentry Retreat will be a conducted at the Baptist Assembly in Toccoa, GA in early March. Georgia WMU is providing WELCOME TO GEORGIA baskets.

liVinG oUR BAPTiSM – Once again this year, we will have a special baptism service on Easter Sunday. I recently came across this article by John and Robin McCullough-Bade. They write: “

Baptism and Easter have always had a strong connection. As Christianity spread in the early church, the weeks before Easter were used to instruct and prepare people for their upcoming baptism at the Easter Vigil—the night before Easter Sunday.” Baptism is a wonderful symbol to let the world know when we become a disciple, a follower of Christ. This article listed seven scripture passages to help us understand what it means to LIVE OUT our baptism. I encourage you do read these scriptures one each day during Holy Week and to really think about what it means to have a new life in Christ!

news from the children’s Search committeenews from the children’s Search committee The Search Committee has been actively reading resumes and following through with Skype interviews with applicants for the position of Minister of Children and Servant Ministries at FBC Cornelia since early January. We spent the Fall praying, visiting other children’s programs and drawing up the job description which was distributed through the SBC, CBF, Colleges and Seminaries and through Pastoral networking. We are searching for the one God has for us to lead our children, their families and the Congregation as we seek to live out FBC’s vision through our AGAPE values.

As we move forward with personal interviews, we ask that you continue to pray for us to be patient and wise as we discern God’s will for our future. It is our hope to be able to present the new Children’s and Servant Ministry Leader in the very near future.

Are you ready to take your faith journey to a new level?

Are you interested in walking with others as they grow to be more like Jesus for the sake of the world?

Disciple = Christ FollowerDevelopment = Growing, changing, transforming, moving toward goalsCoaching = the art of facilitating growth in others through intentional conversations. Disciple Development Coaching = a process designed for empowering disciples to live out their callings as fully and effectively as possible.

MUSic AnD ARTS in WoRShiP Last month, we offered our gifts in many different ways to lead worship. Our Preschool Choir led worship with praise sticks while we sang and then they offered up their sweet voices to worship. On Spiritual Gifts Sunday, our sanctuary had beautiful art work displayed to remind us of the many ways God has gifted us with artistic creativity. Thank you to everyone who shared some of their lovely and incredible pieces of art! Every week is an opportunity for us to worship our Creator, who gifted us to worship Him. The season of Lent leads us to experience the meaningful and moving worship services of Holy Week. For me, music has always had a powerful and emotional impact on my worship. During Holy Week, I’m reminded of what Jesus did for me. The One who never sinned died on the cross to forgive me, a sinner! How can we not recognize the tremendous love God has for us through this sacrifice? God Sent His Son, Jesus, to die on the cross for us!

began to envision a discipleship ministry at First Baptist Cornelia focused on the individual. The solution: Disciple Development Coaching. Disciple Development Coaching is a process designed for empowering disciples to live out their calling as fully and effectively as possible.

Think about Discipleship Coaching like a personal trainer in a gym for your spiritual life. Say, you need to lose weight and grow stronger. You go to the gym, talk with the trainer and set a path to help you reach your goal. As you work towards that goal the trainer listens, tweaks, and walks beside you. In the same way, a discipleship coach empowers disciples, focusing on steps of change, growth and transformation. He or she works with a disciple for a specified amount of time to help them reach their goals. The goal is spiritual transformation. Discipleship coaches are not pastors or chaplain – they are action oriented peers, inviting us to follow Jesus differently.

On April 8-9, 2016, we will bring a Disciple Development Coach to First Baptist to train a team of us to be coaches. Please consider being trained and participating in this new ministry. It will change you, our church members and our church.

Lent is a great season to start allowing God to change your life. I invite you to begin today making the steps God lays before you. I’ll see you Sunday.

When I survey the wondrous cross,On which the Prince of glory died,My richest gain I count but loss,

And pour contempt on all my pride. See from His head, His hands,

His feet,Sorrow and love flow

mingled down;Did e’er such love and sorrow meet,Or thorns compose so rich a crown.

Were the whole realm of nature mine,

That were a present far too small;Love so amazing, so divine,

Demands my soul, my life, my all.

These words by Isaac Watts set to music by Lowell Mason are some of the most moving during Holy Week. Pay close attention to these words as we sing them during Lent. Deep reflection of the death of Christ makes His resurrection more moving and powerful when we joyfully sing “Christ the Lord is risen today!” on Easter Sunday. Don’t miss out on our Holy Week services.

Easter SundayOn Easter morning, First Baptist Cornelia will conduct an Easter Baptism Service. We are inviting anyone who believes in (holds tight to) Jesus as their Savior, but who has not yet been baptized to participate.

For centuries Christian churches have been celebrating baptism services on Easter Sunday. Baptism symbolizes the inner commitment we make to Jesus as Lord and Savior. Baptism on Easter allows us to participate in the death of Jesus on Good Friday - as we go under the water - and his resurrection on Sunday – as we come out. If you are interested in participating in this meaningful service or to talk about another spiritual commitment, please contact Pastor Eric at [email protected] or 706.778.4412.

On Tray MountainMeet at the church at 8:00 AM, Return by 4:00 PM

Each year thousands of hikers start off at Springer Mountain, GA set on hiking 2,168 miles to Maine. It takes over week to get Tray Mountain outside of Helen and by that point they are tired and hungry. When they smell the cooking hamburgers and meet the great folks of Cornelia, they love to stop, talk and eat. All ages are welcomed to travel up to Tray Mtn with us (by van and car) to be the presence of Jesus on the mountain.
