President’s Report – Warren Ripple

Hope you all got to connect with family this past Thanksgiving and

eat your fill of turkey and pumpkin pie. The holiday season is nearly

upon us as we enter the last month of 2016. Once again, I find

myself asking, “Where did the year go?” This year—2016—marks the

50th Anniversary of the founding of the Goodyear Ski Club. In 2016,

we had some great times skiing, enjoyed our social events during the

summer and fall, and this month we will have our annual Holiday

Party to reminisce with friends and discuss 2017 skiing plans.

The Holiday Party will be held on Tuesday, December 13 at the

Houston Hall, located at the rear of the Houston Pub, in Norton. GSC

will provide the main dishes, and we ask that members bring

something to share, such as a side dish or dessert. We will have a

holiday raffle; Vicki Pavell and Rita Tinker have volunteered to assist

with raffle ticket sales at the party. Jim Armington of Buckeye Sports

generously donated a set of skis, which will serve as first prize in the

raffle. There are some very nice prizes making up the top ten. We

have also received several lift tickets and lodging passes which will

be raffled off after the items listed on the raffle tickets.

The following raffle items are printed on the tickets: 1) Pair of skis –

donated by Buckeye Sports; 2) $100 cash; 3) $75 Sheetz card;

4) Four Boston Mills snow tubing vouchers – donated by BMBW;

5) $50 gift card to Buckeye Sports; 6) $25 restaurant gift card;

7) 25 Ohio Lottery tickets; 8) 25 Ohio Lottery tickets; 9) Fifth of

premium spirits; 10) Helly Hansen duffle bag.

So, have you finalized your 2017 ski plans? It’s been a long wait

since Judy and I wrapped up our 2016 skiing, and we are looking

forward to our first trip of 2017 with Betty Wise to Seven Springs.

Although the Lake Placid trip was cancelled at our November

business meeting, there are a number of skiing options still open to

you. The remaining trips: Seven Springs day trip, Holiday Valley

overnight trip, Sun Peaks week trip and Crested Butte week trip have

openings or wait lists for your consideration. Please see more

Marketing Report ~ Judy Ripple

BOSTON MILLS BRANDYWINE OPEN HOUSE

Jaki Batton, Director of Development, BMBW, had requested the names and addresses of our members

that worked the GSC table at the BMBW Open House to send a thank you to each. Those fifteen members

were surprised to receive a thank you note and an All Day Snow Pass to be used at BMBW or Alpine

Valley. As only three ski clubs and CMSC had tables, BMBW greatly appreciated our efforts.

I sent Jaki an email that our volunteers were pleasantly surprised with this unexpected gesture. Jaki will

be organizing a multiple-club event this winter.

BUCKEYE SPORTS SKI CLUB OPEN HOUSE

Thanks to all the GSC members that attended the Buckeye Sports Ski Club Open House on November 11.

Pizza, veggies, cookies, other munchies, wine and beverages were served. An informative presentation of

new clothing and equipment followed, and purchases made that evening included special discounts for ski

club members. Sandy Sucky and Frank Yelinek were the lucky winners of gift certificates and were later

seen shopping!

Sandy Sucky won a $100 Buckeye gift card Frank Yelinek won a $25 Buckeye gift card

GOODYEAR SKI CLUB ON FACEBOOK

Webmaster Dave has added me as an editor to the GSC Facebook account, and I have started posting

photos from our events. Facebook can automatically recognize faces of frequent posters and tag them. For

some of the other photos, I am tagging with a first name only. If you use Facebook, please visit our page

and share with your friends.

CHILI/SOUP COOKOFF

Attendance at our Chili/Soup Cookoff was fantastic - far greater than normal meetings. We had a short

business meeting, and allowing for some sound system modifications, the club may want to consider more

meetings/events of this type for months when there would be little business to handle.

Soup and Chili Cookoff ~ Teresa Gifford

On Friday, November 4, GSC held the annual soup

and chili cookoff. We had seven entries for chili

and four entries for soup. Every entry had a

wonderful flavor, and the decision to choose a

first, second, and third place winner was tough!

I want to thank Bill Nappi for helping to tally votes,

everyone who participated, and all who helped to

set up and clean up the hall.

GSC Euchre Party ~ Bill Nappi

On November 12, 21 GSC members gathered at

the Nappi residence for the annual Euchre party.

Everyone contributed a side dish, and the Club

provided Sloppy Joes, sausage, beer, wine, and

soft drinks. The side dishes were plentiful, ranging

from macaroni & cheese, multi-bean casserole,

craisin salad, broccoli salad, scalloped potatoes,

guacamole & chips, cheese & crackers, shrimp,

deviled eggs, rosemary bread, pumpkin tarts,

pumpkin rolls, caramel cookies, and brownies.

After dining, we began play with sixteen players

and five spectators. While play went on, the

spectators socialized, watched college football, and

munched while circulating among the players. The

play was spirited, with each participant playing ten

rounds of eight hands.

After steady play, numerous

loners – successful or not – and

a few euchres, Betty Wise

captured first place, Linda Slicker

second, Mary Beth Grether third,

and Flo Fiehn and Les Wise

shared fourth.

FUEL SURCHARGES: The GSC may incur additional fuel surcharges to the contracted transportation at any time before trip departure. It is the responsibility of the participant to pay any such increases. Participants having any questions regarding this policy should contact their trip leader. ROOMING PREFERENCES: Due to the nature of our trips, the number of participants, the bedding configuration, and the accommodations secured for the trip participants, the GSC cannot guarantee that the requested rooming preference will be provided. SINGLE SUPPLEMENT: Room rates are based upon double occupancy. If you are a single participant, without a roommate preference, every effort will be made to find you a roommate. If that is not possible, you will be required to pay any single supplement charges that may be imposed. RESPONSIBILITY: GSC is acting as the applicant’s agent and will not be liable for any loss or damage to baggage or property, or any personal injury, or any other loss occurring or occasioned by applicant’s participation or lack of participation in a trip. REFUNDS: Applicant will receive a full refund if the GSC cancels a trip, except and unless such cancellation is necessitated or caused, either wholly or in part, by applicant’s cancellation or failure to make timely payment. 1) Where applicant cancels at any time and trip departs 100% filled, the applicant may be entitled to a refund, less a $5 service charge on any one day trip; a $15 service charge on any weekend trip; or a $25 service charge on any trip over three days. 2) Where applicant cancels and a trip departs less than 100% filled, the applicant may be liable for the entire cost of the applicant’s trip, including deposit, final payment and/or balance due. 3) Applicant shall be liable to the GSC for any monies expended or paid by GSC over and above payments made by the applicant to the GSC. NSF CHECK: For any check returned for insufficient funds, the participant will be assessed a $25 minimum return check fee, plus any daily penalties incurred by the GSC. The return of any check will be cause for cash payments to be made to the GSC Treasurer. If checks are returned for insufficient funds, the Treasurer shall notify the participant and allow him/her fourteen (14) days to cover the check. If funds have not been paid within the fourteen day period, the member may lose his/her position on any GSC trip or activity. This fee allows an individual to participate on a current season ski trip. Within one month from the ending date of the respective trip, the Associate Membership fee may be applied toward a full membership. The fee does not entitle the Associate Member to receive the monthly newsletter or any other GSC benefits. The Associate Membership fee will be in effect only after a trip is opened to non-members.
