Degree College Udhampur (J&K) Year of Report: 2007-08 College Profile Govt. Degree College Udhampur was set up in 1961 as a three year degree course in Science & Arts with a pre – university class attached to it. The first batch of 30 students was admitted on 27 June, 1961 and interestingly no. of girls (17) was more than no. of boys (13). The majestic campus of this decades’ old college is situated in the outskirts of Udhampur town on a hillock overlooking the Devika, the sacred Ganges of Jammu region. Since its inception the college has achieved major landmarks, and is at present one of the leading institutions of higher learning in the State of Jammu and Kashmir. At present, the College provides instruction in the disciplines of Arts, Commerce, Science (Medical and Non-medical), BCA and BBA. We also offer two PG Courses i.e. Post Graduate Course in English & Post Graduate Course in Hindi. A sizable section of students joining this institution comes from such families which mainly depend on agriculture and are economically as well as socially weak. The College carefully caters to the educational needs of this particular section of the society, and puts in every effort to ensure a gradual and meaningful development of the students, both in curricular and extra-curricular domains. The College has a highly qualified and experienced staff, well-equipped laboratories, rich library, play-fields, Boys’ hostel, Multi-purpose hall and other infrastructural facilities. Besides, the lush green splendid campus of the College and equipped with all basic amenities and (with a back drop of the Gangeda Hills) provides ample reasons of attraction and a conducive environment of optimum learning to the students. The prominent alumni are Prof.(Dr.) R.N.K Bamezai, Sh. B.S Mankotia, MLA Udhampur, Sh. Mahender K. Sharma, Judicial Officer, Sh Anoop Kumar Judicial Officer, Sh. Ravi Kesar,IFS, Sh. College Profile

Govt. Degree College Udhampur was set up in 1961 as a three year degree course in Science & Arts with a pre – university class attached to it. The first batch of 30 students was admitted on 27 June, 1961 and interestingly no. of girls (17) was more than no. of boys (13). Curriculum of the college is designed by the Board of Studies of The University of Jammu . HoDs of all the Depts. of the college are members of this body and participate in the meetings held from time to time to revise and reframe the syllabus with their active input and consent . Community services: NSS unit of this College organizes various programs to develop a sense of responsibility towards their Community in the youth . This unit has adopted a old age home and its volunteers devote their time in this home.

• 26th & 27th October, 2007:Two NSS workshops, each of two days’ duration were organized in the session 2007-08 .

• 22nd & 23rd January, 2008: An NSS Workshop was organized . It included a symposium on “Preservation of our culture in the Modern Age” & a visit to the Orphanage run by Social Welfare Department. Dr. Onkar Singh and Prof. Sunita Kumari were the Progaramme Officers.

25. Computerization of administration and the process of admissions and examination results, issue of certificates: Computers are installed in office and some departments. The entire process for admissions was computerized; the list were computer generated and the Registration Return of the students was prepared in the Software (UGMAIN) recommended by the University of Jammu. The Marks Sheets, Result Certificates and Degrees were also computer-generated. 26. Increase in the infrastructural facilities:

There are scholarships for Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes, Low Income groups, Other Social Castes, RBA, Frontier and Handicapped students. National Loan scholarships and National Scholarships are awarded by the Government of India. Besides these, merit scholarships are also awarded to the deserving students by Jammu University. Over and above these scholarships, liberal help is given to the deserving students out of the Mutual Benefit Fund augmented by the State Government grants and UGC Funds.
