Four Winners Announced At 2016 Shale Gas Innovation Contest Finals Event
On May 18th in Pittsburgh during the 5th Annual Shale Gas Innovation Contest the following four companies each walked away with a winner’s check for $20,000: Aridea Solutions; Compass Natural Gas; Epiphany Water Solutions; and HalenHardy, LLC. Bill Hall, Ben Franklin SGICC Director noted, “The 12 finalists once again show the diversity of ideas being brought to the table by entre-preneurs and small companies in the region to help advance the shale energy play. Innovations are now more than ever, critically important to the industry as we manage through this downturn. Con-tinuous innovation is needed in every sector of the industry and all along the value chain, and this is exactly the space that the Ben Franklin Shale Gas Innovation & Commercialization Center (SGICC) works in every day.” (more)
Pa. DEP Secretary Quigley Resigns State Post In Wake Of Email Flap
Pennsylvania Environmental Protection Secretary John Quigley resigned his post effective imme-diately Friday, after a brief meeting with Gov. Tom Wolf.
The move rids the Wolf administration of a secretary with a passion for green causes, but whose style had managed to ruffle so many feathers, a source close to the administration said, that it was no longer clear he was helping. Wolf named Patrick McDonnell as acting secretary of the Department of Environmental Protection, effective immediately. McDonnell had been serving as policy director for the department. (more)
State Revives Energy Efficiency Loans For Homeowners Pennsylvania has revived a program that helps homeowners secure low interest loans to make ener-gy efficiency improvements. KeystoneHELP is a public private partnership between the Pennsylva-nia Treasury Department, Renew Financial, and the nonprofit Energy Programs Consortium. Through the program, Pennsylvania homeowners can get up to $20,000 to make home improve-ments including more efficient HVAC equipment, water heaters, air conditioning, roofing, insula-tion and windows. Philadelphia architect Lizzie Rothwell says she and her husband used the energy efficiency loan to install new roof insulation and replace the duct work in their 2-bedroom South Philly home. She says this reduced their winter energy bills by $40 a month. (more)
Why Utilities Are Investing In This Technology As A Way To Boost Resiliency And Reduce Consumer Costs What if there was a technology your utility could deploy today that was cheaper and cleaner than most existing power generation, that boosted system resiliency and reliability, and was twice as effi-cient? Would you want them to use it? Customers of Duke Energy in North Carolina may soon enjoy these benefits. Duke Energy is just the latest example of utilities around the country that are investing in customer-sited combined heat and power (CHP) plants to bring cleaner, cheaper, and more quickly deployable energy resources to their customers. Duke has proposed to develop, own, and operate a 21 Megawatt (MW) CHP plant located at Duke University. (more)

THANK YOU & GOODBYE!!!
This edition marks the last newsletter I will be coordinating for the GPAEE. Over my 7 year tenure, I have truly enjoyed supporting the tremendously growth of this organization. During that time the coordinated efforts of the board members have accomplished much in serving the needs of the GPAEE community. Some of these include the institution of the Employment Initiative to help connect employers with potential candidates in the region, the website redevelopment with StarChapter, hosting the chapter’s very first CEM training and the numerous awards for which the chapter has been recognized. Thank you, it has been a pleasure to get to know you all. I hope to see you at some upcoming meetings.
All the Best - Caroline
