PLANNING FOR THE FUTURE

Located in Chester County, Pennsylvania, the Downingtown STEM Academy will be sending students out to area businesses to explore possible career paths.

The STEM Academy, a Downingtown Area district magnet school opened its doors in 2011 with an academi-cally diverse student population with significant interest in the STEM fields. A one-to one laptop initiative school, the Academy offers an academically challenging program of study that exposes students to a variety of science and technology courses through the International Baccalaureate (IB ) curriculum in addition to a Pathways Program. The Pathways program, which students enter in their Junior year, consists of four Acade-mies: Applied Science and Engineering; Health Medicine and Biology; Corporate and Mathematical Innova-tion, and Technology, Media and Communications, and includes experiential classes with guest speakers, field trips and culminates in a 21-hour job shadow experience. Last summer, 173 STEM Academy students shad-owed with partner companies such as Bentley Systems, West Pharmaceutical Services, Main Line Engineer-ing, GE Power and Water and Morphotek to give students an up close look at potential careers.

The STEM Academy is ready to have a new class of Juniors experience the world of work this summer. In preparation, all students attended “soft skills” training to learn professional skills like writing an introductory email, resume and thank you notes in addition to communication and collaboration. These are the skills that business leaders insist are necessary for career success and advancement. The students then attended a Career Fair, April 1st at The Academy to meet 29 area businesses to network and interview for their summer place-ments.

The STEM Academy welcomes new business partners who are interested in partnering and helping to devel-op the future workforce. Contact Susan Boardman, Internships & Partnerships Leader, [email protected] to be a part of the team. To learn more about our school and programs, http://dasdsharepoint.asd.org/Schools/STEMAcademy/Pages/default.aspx

Our chapter mission includes fostering action through education and networking to promote the priorities of energy professionals. This year our chapter is making it a priority to extend our valuable chapter resources to the energy professionals of the future. Our plans will take a variety of paths.

Student Involvement in Meetings

Co-Ops, Internships and Mentoring Opportunities

Scholarships Our board will continue to support projects such as the Future Cities Competition, local STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) academy programs and AEE International student initiatives. We welcome participation from the membership, your ideas on ways to enhance youth involvement and educa-tion are highly encouraged. To share suggestions, please contact Maryanne Campbell at (215) 684-6724 or via email at: [email protected].

FUTURE OF NEW EPA POWER PLANT RULES DEPENDS ON THE STATES

Now that the Environmental Protection Agency has unveiled new standards for emissions from power plants, responsibility will fall to the states to come up with their own plans to reduce planet-warming emissions.

The EPA's plan calls for a 30 percent cut to emissions from power plants by 2030. The goals for each state are based on a calculation that takes into account their current emissions and their poten-tial for making reductions. States will be given a high degree of control in deciding how they will meet those individual standards. (more)

MAJORITY OF AMERICANS SUPPORT LIMITING GREENHOUSE GAS EMISSIONS, EVEN IF

IT COSTS THEM

Most Americans support limits on greenhouse gas emissions from power plants and would still sup-port reductions even if it cost them $20 a month, according to a new national poll. A Washington Post-ABC poll released Monday found that 70 percent of Americans support federal limits on green-house gas emissions from power plants. Seventy percent also said that the federal government should "require states to limit the amount of greenhouse gases produced within their borders." (more)

AS HURRICANE SEASON BEGINS, NEW STORM SURGE MAPS EMPHASIZE IMPORTANCE

OF PREPAREDNESS

When Hurricane Sandy struck the Northeast, it was not the storm’s winds but the massive pile of water those winds pushed in front of the storm that wreaked the most havoc, inundating coastal are-as in 3 to 9 feet of water, causing billions in damages, and leaving dozens dead. In general, this storm surge poses a far greater threat to lives and property than winds when hurricanes and tropical storms hit. (more)

PUC CHAIR STEPS DOWN FROM ENERGY ADVOCACY GROUP Amid growing tension surrounding the Pennsylvania Public Utility Commission’s role in a high-profile pipeline project, Commission Chair Rob Powelson has stepped down from an energy advoca-cy and economic development group. He said he did so to “avoid even the appearance of bias.” Powelson resigned from the Greater Philadelphia Energy Action Team in a letter dated May 14. It came two weeks after StateImpact Pennsylvania published a story about concerns that Powelson’s presence in the group could pose a conflict of interest in a case before the PUC. (more)

PGW CEO TALKS JOBS AND THE FUTURE AFTER TAKEOVER BID Philadelphia Gas Works head Craig White sat down with me to chat about the potential $1.86 billion sale of the natural gas company — a company he’s been with for more than 30 years. White, CEO since 2011, discussed his support for the sale of the nation’s largest municipally owned utility to Con-necticut-based investor-owned UIL Holdings, even though his role could dramatically change in the future.
