GPC tips and tricks

The Güntner Product Calculator (GPC) is a highly successful configura-tion utility, which has been developed over time in response to input from customer satisfaction analyses to become the powerful software tool with the numerous functions that it is today. We currently have a team of five people permanently engaged in its development who issue at least one update every month.

To give you an overview of the wealth of functions it now has, this brochure offers you a collection of important tips and tricks that are intended to help you use our software even more effectively.

Incidentally: Unlike other manufacturers’ selection programs, the GPC does not use interpolation. Because we know: Anyone who has to plan for specific usage conditions is not helped by that type of calculation. The GPC therefore provides precise thermodynamic calculations even for unusual areas of application.

You will find regular updates and more information at:www.guentner.eu

How can I save frequently occurring inputs as defaults?

The “Default” function saves time and prevents typing errors. You can specify that frequently occurring values should be used as the dialogue’s proposed values by clicking on the button “Save as Default”. If you want to revoke such a changed default, click on the button “Reset to Standard”.

How often should I update the software?

Where can I find information about current delivery times?

An integrated regular update service keeps the GPC’s information constantly up to date. We recommend to update once a month. Delivery times are brought up to date at the same time and displayed in the technical data sheet.

Which languages are available in the GPC?

The GPC can be used internationally with no restrictions, because all its data and calcula-tions can be called up as required in German, English, French, Czech, Spanish, Croatian, Italian, Hungarian, Dutch, Polish, Portuguese, Slovakian, Finnish, Russian and Chinese. You can even choose different languages for run-ning the program and printing out the data. This makes it easier to communicate with colleagues and customers who speak different languages.

Where can I find recommenda-tions for the correct materials to select for different fields of application?

If you want recommendations for materials, click on “?” and activate the information window for that topic.

1. Click on the appropriate icon

2. Click on the “i” in the unit selection function

How can I get more information about Güntner products?

There are direct links to the product pages in the Internet and the literature database.

Güntner’s website contains a page for each product containing extensive information and a link to the corresponding product literature in the database. This information is now directly accessible from two places in the GPC.

How can I recalculate units for different conditions?I recalculated an existing configuration and received different results. What is the reason for that?

Recalculating existing units

You can not only use the GPC to configure new units, you can also recalculate existing ones. You do this by opening the input screen “Unit selec-tion” and checking “Calculate single unit”. Then, in the screen “Thermodynamics” select the calculation mode “Optimise capacity” and enter your data. If a recalculation produces results that differ from those in an existing data sheet, a look at the GPC’s thermodynamic calculation may help. In particular, check whether the humidity, geodetic height, air temperature, frost thickness, superheating and subcooling temperatures were specified correctly. Your selected accessories, such as epoxy fins, air socks and stainless steel tubes may also affect the capacity.

Superheating depends on the expansion valve

Alternatively you can click on the icon on the toolbar. Inlet temperature is not the

same as room temperature; it is the average value of the air temperature in the cooler.

Humidity of the room (subdivided into sensible heat and latent heat)

Air pressure or geodetic height over NN

Condensation temperature and subcooling: these are important for determining the partial evapora-tion that will already have occurred downstream from the expansion valve, which may have a consider-able effect on the performance.

What is the difference between surface reserve and capacity reserve?

Why does the GPC calculate the surface reserve and not the capacity reserve?

Where a specific performance is given, the GPC gives you the option of search-ing for the so-called “surface reserve”. To do this, activate the calculation mode “Specify capacity (Search for surface reserve)” in the “Thermodynamics” screen. After you have entered the capacity data, the program will calculate the heat transfer coefficient (U value) to determine the required heat exchanger surface area. If you compare the calculated surface area with the actual surface area of the selected unit you will obtain the value for the surface reserve, which is generally higher than the capacity reserve.

Determining the surface reserve

How do I specify or convert units of measurement?

If you want to use the GPC to convert be-tween units of measurement you can use the drop-down lists of units for the input fields. To convert a value into a different physical unit, select the desired unit preceded by an arrow (e.g. >°F) from the lower part of the drop-down list under “Units Menu”. You will find more unit conversion options in the GPC Help function.

How do I choose units from store with short delivery times?

If a warehouse icon is shown next to a unit then this unit is available from store. If no warehouse symbol is shown then the usual delivery time will apply. You can have this information updated from the menu “Updates/delivery times”.

Customised sorting

Can I sort the result list?

You can sort the results for each column by clicking on the column header. The default setting is “Ascending price”, but you can also sort according to surface area, capacity, air volume, etc.

Configuration tips

What are the traffic light colours for?

What is the advantage of choosing accessories at the beginning of the selection process? Right at the beginning of the configuration process, traffic light colours give you important information as to the suitability of a given series for your entered parameters. If you begin by selecting the accessories, the colours show you which series have the selected acces-sories. The result list then also shows you the price including these accessories, and this will help you to quickly and reliably find the most economical complete solution.

Partial load operation: flexible calculation

Specifying different currencies

Specifying the energy efficiency rating

Can I use the GPC to calculate night mode or partial loads?

The Güntner Product Calculator provides a feature that can rapidly, conveniently and flexibly calculate a wide variety of partial load conditions. You can specify reduced motor speed or power as a way of limiting noise emissions. The output is then shown in the form of a table for a user-defined temperature range. The “moon and stars” icon symbolises the fact that this mode is usually needed for operation at night.

The default values are initially set according to the unit configuration. Clicking on “Cal-culate” outputs a table showing, for a given external temperature, how low the condensing temperature can be reduced with the noise levels and the performance requirements unchanged. This table not only shows you the correct values for air flow and speed, but also the fans’ power consumption.

Can I display the price of a unit in a different currency?

You have the option of having prices printed out in any desired currency.

How can I display those units that consume the least amount of electrical energy?

If energy efficiency is your highest priority, then you can specify the energy efficiency class first of all when configuring the con-densers and drycoolers.

What do I need to remember when selecting special thermostatic expansion valves with internal heat exchangers for GHFB fruit and vegetable coolers?

The newly developed special expansion valve combined with an internal heat exchanger facilitates safe and stable operation with small temperature differences. Unlike when you select a standard expansion valve, here the GPC specifies a fixed combination of the two components.

What do I need to remember when using the GPC to select thermostatic expansion valves?

Since all Güntner HFC evaporators intended for the refrigerants R134a and R404A/R507 can be ordered with attached thermostatic expansion valves, a TEV module has been added to Güntner’s GPC configuration software. You can use this module to con-figure thermostatic expansion valves to the precise operating conditions without having to change to a different program – such as one from an expansion valve manufacturer – and specify the boundary conditions afresh. This module also calculates and outputs, for the configured state, the minimum condensation temperature and degree to which the valve is opened.

Can I use the GPC to select speed regulators for condensers and drycoolers?

Güntner’s condensers and drycoolers can optionally be equipped with AC or EC fans. Güntner has developed appropriate controllers for these fan types and equipped them with application-oriented functions.

How do I call up the principal menus with a click?

Instead of the pull-down menus the GPC also gives you the option of using icons. This makes the functions easier to find and they can be activated with a simple click. You can call up this and all the other tips from the actual program under the “?” functions “Help Topics” and “Help Index”, or alternatively by pressing “F1”.
