Brandon School Division offers both English and French Immersion Academic programs at the Grade 7 and 8 level. In each program students are required to study the core subjects: Language Arts, Mathematics, Science and Social Studies. In the compulsory complementary area, students in their Grade 7 year take a year long Home Economics program and in their Grade 8 year take Industrial Arts. In addition, they must choose either Art or Band. Students in the regular English school program may choose to take Basic French. For students who do not choose French; each school has the flexibility to develop school -based programming such as additional time in core subjects, health, technology or life skills. Staffing decisions are made based on the options selected by students; therefore, parents and students are asked to make careful choices as changes during the school year are extremely difficult to arrange. Students who have studied in French Immersion at the K -6 level have the opportunity to continue their studies in Grade 7 and 8. The regular program continues an emphasis on academic content while also preparing them for occupational choices at the high school or post high school level. Program differentiation is made according to student needs. Home Economics - Grade 7 (year-long program) The curriculum is equally divided into two sections entitled Foods and Nutrition, and Clothing and Textiles. In the Food and Nutrition section, students study proper measurement, how to identify and use equipment, food safety, Canada ’s Food Guide, and nutrients and meal planning. A major component in the Food and Nutrition area includes cooking a healthy, well balanced meal for families at home and submitting a project describing what was made. In Clothing and Textiles, students learn different properties of textiles and how to use them to create finished products. Students are required to bring their own materials, or in some cases be assessed a fee for materials on a cost recovery basis. Students will also learn how to take care of textiles. One of the ways they will do this includes completing a take home laundry assignment. Home Economics is delivered at Earl Oxford or Riverheights Schools.

Industrial Arts - Grade 8 (year-long program) The Industrial Arts program specializes in a hands-on learning experience while focusing on Woodworking. Students learn practical skills and develop their creative skills while focusing on the design process, problem solving, and decision-making practices. They learn how to work safe, both independently and cooperatively with hand and power tools, materials, and technological processes to research, plan, build and test projects in specific disciplines.

Delivered at Riverheights, Earl Oxford and École Harrison.

NOTE: The Brandon School Division and the City of Brandon have been providing transit passes for students attending Home Economics and Industrial Arts. Please contact your school in September 2018 for a transportation update. INSTRUMENTAL MUSIC (BAND) The band program is offered to all Grade 7 to Grade 12 students in the Division. For schools without band rooms or with insufficient numbers, students will be bused at the Division’s expense to another school for band classes. The specific arrangements will be determined once the registration process is complete. Grade 7 and 8 students become part of either the East side program at Earl Oxford or the West side program at Waverly Park. Students in Grade 8 remain in the same program as their Grade 7 year. When registering for courses, Grade 7/8 students have the choice of selecting either “Band” or “Visual Art” to fulfill Provincial Arts Curriculum instruction for the year. As this choice is new to the Grade 7 band students, students have the opportunity in September to try band without being locked in for the year. Following the September trial period, Grade 7 students should remain in their arts course of choice (Band or Visual Art) for the rest of the school year. Students would be allowed to switch programming mid-year in special circumstances, and after consultation between student, band teacher, parent and home-school principal has occurred. Parents of students registering for Grade 7 have the option of supplying their own instrument (subject to quality approval by the band teacher), however, most students choose to acquire an instrument for the year from B.S.I.M.A. The instrument usage fee for all instruments for the year is $110.00. A usage form must be completed and signed. In Grade 8, students who play flute, clarinet, trumpet, trombone, alto, or tenor sax must provide their own instrument. Students who play oboe, bass clarinet, bassoon, French horn, euphonium, tuba, string bass, or percussion can continue to rent from BSIMA through Grade 12. All students are welcome in our band program. Financial assistance will be provided for any student or family in need. A form will be provided by the band teacher on request. Please indicate if partial funding, complete funding or a payment plan is required.

FRENCH The course French: Communication and Culture Grades 4 to 12, aims to provide all students in Manitoba with quality French instruction which enables them to communicate in the French language and to appreciate francophone cultures. The goals of the course are to give students the opportunity: to acquire the necessary language skills to communicate in French; to value the learning of French as a tool for personal, intellectual, and social growth; to demonstrate an appreciation of francophone cultures; and to further develop intercultural communication skills which are key assets to becoming global

citizens.

Please note: Students not taking French are required to take a school initiated option such as Math or Language Arts enrichment. See your school Counsellor or Principal for details.

The French Immersion program is offered at the Grade 7 and 8 school level at École New Era School and École Harrison for students who have taken their elementary schooling in an Early Years French Immersion language program from school such as École Harrison, École New Era School or École O'Kelly School . ART Art education gives students the opportunity to work with different art materials, to experiment with different art techniques, and to learn about our cultural and artistic heritage in various ways. Art classes include both practical and theoretical aspects of art.

The school catchment areas have been established in order to offer the students of the Division the opportunity to attend schools within a reasonable distance of their homes. This is referred to as the "neighbourhood school concept." This concept supports the belief that parents and students, together with the staff of their neighbourhood school, will develop a sense of community.

Catchment boundaries are reviewed annually by the Secretary Treasurer's Department with the needs of the students and community in mind. When boundary changes are implemented every effort is made to minimize disruption to students. Under provincial legislation, students may apply to attend school, other than their catchment school, provided accommodation is available . The supporting administrative procedure is referred to as "Assignment to Schools (Section 5.3)". Should you wish to apply to a school outside your catchment area, application must be made before May 15th. For more information pick up a "School of Choice" brochure at your school or see your school Principal.* The schools are under no obligation to consider any "School of Choice" applications after the May 15th deadline.
