IB Diploma Program
Who is a good fit for the GHCHS IB Program?
We define success in IB as being healthy, happy, and proud of yourself at the end ofyour two years. Success is not measured by grades, test scores, and collegeacceptances. Our most successful IB students embrace (and actively work to getbetter at) the following personal attitudes toward learning. Successful IB students 1)love working with others, 2) love community service, 3) love ideas and concepts, 4)view mistakes as opportunities for learning, and are 5) motivated by deeperunderstanding, not by grades and test scores. Students who struggle with theseattitudes, and who are not open to new learning styles and suggestions for how toimprove, tend to struggle in the IB program.
When deciding whether to apply for the GHCHS IB Program, remember the programis designed for students that exhibit these attitudes toward learning.

IB Diploma Program
Course Requirements:
• 6 subject courses (from 6 different categories)
• Theory of Knowledge (TOK)
• Internal Assessments (Presentations, Portfolios, and Labs)
• External Assessments (Written Exams, Portfolios, Research Essays)
HL and SL Courses:
• HL: Higher Level, 240 Teaching Hours, 1 Weighted Point• SL: Standard Level, 150 Teaching Hours, .5 Weighted Point
• Weight determined by number of IB assessments taken
IB Course Requirements
IB assessments are of two types: internal and external. Internal assessments (IA)allow students to show what they can do over time and in different contexts.External assessments (EA) form the basis of assessment for most courses. EAs aresimilar to AP exams and are taken at the end of the course, usually senior year. However, they are mostly written, not multiple choice.
Internal Assessments:
• Account for 20-30% of a student’s final IB score.• Externally moderated by IB examiners to ensure international parity.• Oral presentations, performances, portfolios, research papers, laboratory
experiments, and laboratory notebooks.
External Assessments:
• Account for 70-80% of a student’s final IB score.
• Externally graded by examiners across the world.• Short responses, data-based questions, essay responses, multiple-choice
questions, portfolios.• External assessments usually take 2 to 3 hours to complete.
IB Assessments: Internal and External
Assessment Choice:
• Multiple choice questions are only asked on science assessments
• Choose from a variety of questions
• Choose your own research topics
• Choose your own presentation topics
• Choose your own lab topics
Assessment Types:
• Internal Assessments (Presentations, Portfolios, and Labs)
• External Assessments (Written Exams, Portfolios, Research Essays)

Not all courses may be offered each year. Course availability is determined by student
demand for the course, teacher interest, and space available in the GHCHS master
schedule. In April each year, students will complete a course request form. If at any
time courses are determined to be unavailable, the IB Coordinator will meet with the
student to select an appropriate alternative.
Student scheduling begins in April of each year and continues through the summer and
into the first week of Fall semester. Students and parents will have several
opportunities to meet with the IB Coordinator and can email schedule and class
questions at any time. Because there are many ways to arrange an IB schedule, and
each student has different needs, we encourage you to meet with the IB Coordinator
([email protected]) to discuss in more detail. Sometimes, there are scheduling
solutions that are not apparent at first glance and only emerge after talking about the
concern.
IB Course Availability and Programming
IB Diploma students take 7 subjects—some at standard level and some at
higher level. At least 3 and not more than 4 subjects are assessed at higher
level, the others at standard level. Students may take more than 4 subjects at
higher level; however, they can only assess in a maximum of 4 for the IB
Diploma. The seventh IB course is the Theory of Knowledge course.
The marks awarded for each subject, determined by the student’s
performance on the internal and external assessments, range from 1
(lowest) to 7 (highest).
Students may earn up to 3 additional points for their combined results on
their mandatory Theory of Knowledge essay, Extended Essay, and CAS
project.
IB Diploma Scoring and Completion
With 6 subject courses (each with a possible 7 points) and the 3 additional
required components, there are a maximum of 45 total points a student may
earn. In addition, students must complete and pass the Theory of Knowledge
essay, the Extended Essay, and CAS project to earn their IB Diploma.

The following slides outline a variety of ways students can create an IB schedule. There
is no one right way to make an IB schedule. For many IB students, a wide variety of
courses with no particular focus is the best option since most students are still trying to
find what they are most interested in.
All students, regardless of their personal interests, work together in all classes. If
students have particular interests they wish to pursue after high school (i.e., pre-med,
international relations, art school, etc.), they can choose IB courses and assessments
that allow them to focus part of their day and part of their IB assessment schedule on
topics that will make them stronger applicants to that particular focus.
During our College Planning and Preparation workshops, we work with students to
teach them how best to highlight their focused work and assessments on their college
applications.

*If you participate in a sport or other activity that requires you to attend a period during the day, that would replace one of your required IB classes. However, IB requires that you assess in 6 subjects and TOK. So, students
would work on one of their subjects in a different way. Some ways include working with a teacher, taking a Pierce College course, testing in a 1-year IB course, etc. Our current student athletes and leaders will be happy to discuss
how they have been able to work this out).
Activities that traditionally do not work are swim team and band.

CAS Requirements
What is the CAS project?
• CAS stands for Creativity, Action, and Service.
• CAS focuses on experiential learning.
• CAS requires approximately 150 hours of service and action.
• CAS is not a series of random, unconnected volunteer hours.
• CAS discourages “hour counting” and emphasizes real, purposeful, and
meaningful work toward a central student-generated goal.
• CAS should be a personal challenge and result in significant, thoughtful
reflection on outcomes and personal growth.

IB CAS Project Mission Statements
Since the CAS project must emphasize meaningful work toward a centralstudent-generated goal, Granada IB students first develop a missionstatement that stating how their work will utilize their strengths and improvetheir weaknesses. The following are examples of student mission statements.
EXAMPLE 1:
In order to understand the human mind and using my strength in music as astarting place, I will look into music therapy. I plan to shadow a musictherapist, interview people that have gone through the treatment, and thentest my research at musical performances. I shall also become a mentor to ayoung pianist and thus help improve his or her technique. Throughout thisprocess, I will be using different learning methods for the young pianist andconduct an analysis of how his or her brain functions. From this project, Ihope to become a better musician, start a long lasting interest in psychology, and in the future, be able to help those with weak mental health with mymusic therapy skills.
IB CAS Project Mission Statements
EXAMPLE 2:
In order to improve my writing abilities, I plan to utilize my verbalcommunication skills and passion for history to create a journal and websiteon the lives of surviving veterans. I plan to volunteer at a retirement home, and through a partnership with the Library of Congress’ Veterans HistoryProject, document history as experienced by those individuals. My researchwill contribute not only to international records, but also bring importanceand recognition to the veterans whom I interview. Through this experience, Iwill improve my writing skills and gain a new respect for history and thosewho bravely fought for their country.

College Applications
How can the IB Diploma Program help with college applications?
Myth 1: Colleges in the US have not heard of IB.
Myth 2: IB is perceived as inferior to AP.
Myth 3: IB hurts students in admissions.
IB College Application Myths
There are 6 essential elements in a college application:
1. GPA
2. SAT and ACT
3. Strength of Schedule
4. Letters of Recommendation
5. Community Service and Extracurricular Activities
6. Personal Statements
In IB, we actively work to strengthen each of these 6 elements.
In IB, students participate in monthly college planning workshops. Students
work on researching colleges, building their resume, practicing interview
skills, writing personal statements, identifying internships, and filling out
the application.
IB College Admissions
How can the IB program help my GPA?
• Every HL course receives a 1-point weight. Therefore, if a
student earns a B in a course, they receive a 4.0 rather than
a 3.0 in determining their GPA for the course. If they earn an
A, they receive a 5.0 in the course.
• Every SL course receives a .5-weight.
College Admissions: GPA
How can the IB program help my SAT and ACT scores?
• Students are required to read and write extensively in all IB courses,
including math, science, and theater courses.
• Students cover all levels of math in their mathematics courses. Thus,
they receive substantial review of algebra and geometry skills they may
not have reviewed since middle school.
• Students receive calculator instruction in all IB courses.
• Students receive intensive timed writing instruction in all IB courses.
• IB students and teachers will hold independent SAT review sessions.
• 23 of Granada’s top 50 PSAT scores were earned by IB students.
College Admissions: SAT and ACT
How can the IB program help my strength of schedule?
• Students who enroll in the full IB diploma program will be taking one ofthe most demanding and rigorous schedules available.
Duke University: Admissions Director
“One of the advantages of an IB curriculum is its structure and quality. It is acoordinated programme, well-established, well-known, and well-respected.We know the quality of IB courses, and we think the curriculum is terrific.”
Harvard University: Assistant Admissions Director
“IB is well known to us as excellent preparation. Success in an IB programmecorrelates well with success at Harvard. We are pleased to see the credentialsof the IB Diploma Program on the transcript.”
College Admissions: Strength of Schedule
College Admissions: Strength of Schedule
How can the IB program help my letters of recommendation?
• At Granada, most IB courses have between 20 and 30 students.
• In IB, students work one on one with teachers to conduct research.
• In IB, students will get to know teachers more personally and, therefore,
the teachers will be able to write highly personalized, reflective, and
insightful letters of recommendation.
• In IB, assessments cover a wide range of skills. For instance, in English,
students complete IB assessments in public speaking, research, essay
writing, and oral commentaries. The variety of assessments provide
teachers with a wide range of areas from which to discuss a student’s
strengths.
College Admissions: Letters of Recommendation
How can the IB program help me with community service?
• The IB CAS project requires a substantial service project.
• The IB CAS project is not a series of random volunteer service hours.
Rather, the CAS project aims at the completion of a well thought out and
designed mission that aims to make a part of the student’s community
and their own life better.
• Students will be able to communicate the goals and the impact of their
service to colleges in more depth and with greater reflection.
• Interested students and parents are welcome to attend our CAS
exhibition on April 14, 2016 to see the variety of student projects.
College Admissions: Community Service
How can the IB program help me with college essays?
• Personal, reflective writing is often the most difficult form of writing.
• In IB, every class requires reflective, personal writing.
• In IB, students will have meaningful experiences through CAS to write
about in their personal statements.
• In IB, students participate in personal statement writing workshops
during second semester of 11th grade.
