Grayhawk Elementary School has lots of traditions, but Heroes’ Day is probably

the one that excites the children the most. Each year around the time of Veteran’s Day, the school celebrates local (and even some non-local) heroes by inviting them to a lunch in their honor. Over the years there have been astronauts, police officers, firefighters, and members of every branch of the military in attendance. Children decked out in red, white and blue clothing line up for autographs and to ask questions. The energy in the room is contagious and it’s easy to see that the heroes enjoy this day just as much as the students do.

“We have Heroes who come back year after year - some even schedule family visits around Grayhawk Elementary’s Heroes’ Day. It’s a great way for us to honor these heroes for all they have done and are doing for us, and it’s fun to watch the students interact with the heroes. The students are so excited to see them.”, says Susan Matura, the PTO Community Representative and chairperson for this event.

This year the lunch took place on November 7 in the school’s multi-purpose room and approximately 40 heroes attended. Retired Air Force Colonel Joe L. Martin has attended

the lunch for the past two years and said, “It’s great that the teachers, faculty, and school are interested in exposing the kids to and celebrating service-orientated individuals and their careers. I believe the heros in attendance enjoyed the festivities as much as the kids.”

Captain Matthew Morrison of the Air Force Reserves 69 Fighter Squadron adds, “It was such an honor to attend the GES Heroes Day Luncheon! It was exciting to meet and talk with all the students who are the heroes of our future. It was also very special meeting and sharing stories with all the other military veterans, police, firefighters, and local heroes. It was a truly memorable and fun event!”

One of the most special moments was when all the activity suddenly stopped so that everyone in the room could face the American flag and listen to Mrs. Dolezal, the school’s music teacher, sing the National Anthem. There were a few surprises too. A Scottsdale Police Department K-9 dog was part of the festivities, which was a huge hit with the students. And to help build the excitement, heroes participated in the morning announcements during the week leading up to the big day. It will definitely be difficult to top this next year, but the Grayhawk PTO will find a way.

It’s events like this that make Grayhawk Elementary School the heart and soul of the community. It’s just one of the many ways that the school brings learning to life. Throughout the year, special programs are planned that reinforce values and enhance the curriculum all while feeling like a party. Most recently was the Asian Festival that second graders took part in to celebrate their study of that continent. Students learned Indian dances, created fun art projects, practiced Chinese character writing and were treated to a variety of traditional Asian foods.

Madison Holmes is a 12 year-old up and coming singer/songwriter who lives

right here in Grayhawk. The former Student Council President of Grayhawk Elementary School is now a 7th grader at Explorer Middle School. She loves to perform music from the country, rock and pop genres and has been performing locally since age seven on the piano and age ten on the guitar. Madison has had a major interest in music since she was a toddler and has always loved performing. Her first live performance was at a community holiday event in Rancho Santa Margarita, California at the age of four. That performance marked her first time being featured in a local newspaper. It was a sure sign of things to come.

If you haven’t had a chance to check out one of her shows before, be sure to head over to Grayhawk Golf Club where she is featured regularly on Wednesday nights and is always a crowd pleaser. The locals love her and are quick to forget that she isn’t even a teenager yet. More times than not, her age isn’t even

noticed because of the mature quality to her voice and how well she carries herself.

Some of her other performances throughout the valley include venues such as Alice Cooperstown, THE MIM, Harold’s Corral, Cocomo Joe’s, Azool Grill, The Horney Toad, The Hideaway Grill, Scottsdale Air Fair, The AZ Watermelon Festival, Desert Ridge Marketplace, and Isabella’s Kitchen. As exciting as it is for a young girl to have the opportunity to perform at all of these well-known venues, her favorite place to play continues to be Grayhawk Golf Club because it’s “home”.

This young talent also believes in giving back to the community and has performed at numerous charity functions around the Phoenix metropolitan area, including an event to help raise funds for the Yarnell Firefighters. Madison has also been using her musical talents to bring joy to the residents at the Barton House Senior Living Facilities for Alzheimer care for the past three years. Most recently, was chosen to

perform along with many other young musical talents at Rock the District, an annual event that benefits the Cave Creek School District.

Ryan Sims, The Beatles, Alicia Keys, The Eagles, Katy Perry, Eric Clapton, Elton John, Lady Antebellum, Miranda Lambert, Carrie Underwood, Taylor Swift, Fleetwood Mac, are just a few of her musical inspirations. In fact, an opportunity that Madison had to take the stage with Ryan Sims during one of his acoustic shows in November 2012 led to her being asked to open for his band, EastonAshe, during many of their area shows. The list of other well-respected musicians she has performed with continues to grow and includes Andrew Varner, Ethan Newman, Bryan Hawksworth and Johnathan Manhart.

Madison hopes her music will one day inspire and change the lives of others as it has done for her. We are proud to have her as a neighbor!

that are happening in the area surrounding Grayhawk in the months ahead. There sure is a lot going on.

If you’ve traveled north on Scottsdale Road past Deer Valley then I’m sure you’ve encountered the road construction going on there. It’s the new retail center going in on at Pinnacle Peak and Scottsdale Road called Silverstone at Pinnacle Peak. This 12-acre development will feature Sprouts and has designated space for a fast food restaurant with dual drive-through lanes. Restaurants with mountain views and specialty retail are planned for the remaining space. Silverstone is expected to be completed by early 2015 and should be a nice addition to the options we already have as Grayhawk residents.

Another development making news is City Center at City North. City Center has leased out almost 40,000 SF of space that includes the expansion of existing tenants and several new contracts. Toby Keith’s I Love This Bar, expected to open on High Street by summer 2014, is one of the most exciting new additions. There will be space for 300 to enjoy live country music, country dancing, and dancing whiskey girls. In addition to being a fun place to hang at, it will create 125-175 jobs.

City Center has also leased out several office spaces to new tenants and welcomes Stealth Software’s new global headquarters. The company recently announced its plans to create 200 new tech jobs here. Another large tech company also signed a lease for its first location in Arizona and more information is expected soon.

All of this activity signals a nice rebound in all segments of the Real Estate market and helps strengthen the economy in the northeast valley, which benefits all of us. Whether you are in the market for a new job or just want some great new places to dine and shop, this recent development boom should come as good news.
