GRAYHAWK GOLF CLUB The Treasure in our Backyard

With the Phoenix Open coming to a close, it’s time to turn our attention from spectating to actually grabbing those clubs and

hitting the links. Here at Grayhawk, we are fortunate enough to have two world-class golf courses in our backyard. For some of us, literally in our backyard!

If you’re new to the Grayhawk community or simply not familiar with Grayhawk Golf Club, here’s the inside scoop. Even though we consider it “our” golf club, Grayhawk Golf Club is open to everyone as public facility and has no official affiliation to Grayhawk Community Association. You don’t have to be a member or even live in Grayhawk to enjoy its many amenities. But it’s still an unofficial home to many residents and accommodates community-driven events throughout the year.

The club consists of two, 18-hole courses — Raptor and Talon. The Raptor side is home to the main clubhouse, but a short cart ride under Thompson Peak Parkway reveals the equally spectacular Talon side that offers plenty of food and drink choices in addition to some great golf. Each course also has its own practice facilities. While we’d like to keep it all to ourselves, there’s no hiding all that Grayhawk Golf Club has to offer. It welcomes visitors from all over the world each year and has hosted prestigious events such as Phoenix Open Pro-Am, Frys.com Open and Tommy Bahama’s Desert Marlin.

Whether you enjoy golf or not, there’s still many reasons to head over to the club. The three main restaurants, Phil’s Grill (do you have to guess who it’s named after?), Quill Creek Café and Isabella’s Kitchen serve up great food in an unbeatable atmosphere. They each have their own unique feel and signature menu items. Phil’s is a top-notch spot to enjoy an icy cold beer while watching sports on one of the many high-def TVs. Quill Creek boasts a varied menu and breathtaking mountain views. It’s also home to the best Wednesday happy hour in town, featuring live music and a specially priced menu. Insiders tip: don’t miss the Grande Margarita and warm pretzel bread.

Not to be outdone, Isabella’s (known as Izzy’s to the locals) has become quite the evening hot spot. With an indoor/outdoor bar, panoramic views of the Talon Course and huge patio complete with fire pits, you can feel yourself begin to unwind from the moment you arrive. Taking in the scenery from the roof-top patio is a must. Just remember—what happens on the roof, stays on the roof!

If you’re just passing through Grayhawk quickly, there’s also The Morning Joint, aka Mojo. Located right by the entrance of the clubhouse, it’s a great place to grab breakfast or lunch that can be ordered to go or enjoyed on the relaxing patio. Moju, a juice bar within Mojo, recently debuted with a host of good-for-you items that, if requested, blend nicely with a shot of vodka for anyone who needs an extra kick start!

Whether you’ve ben out on the course all day or just stopping by for lunch, don’t forget to visit the Golf Shop and Trading Company, located in the main clubhouse. More of a boutique retail experience than a golfer’s auxiliary, the Golf Shop offers a wide array of golf apparel, accessories and equipment that will be appreciated by the game’s traditionalists as well as the more trend conscious crowd. It’s a also a great place to pick up a gift for someone waiting at home if you’ve been enjoying yourself at the club just a little too long!

Because of the quality of the courses and gorgeous setting, it can easily be confused with a private club. The grounds are impeccably maintained, with lots of attention to detail. But as a public course, anyone can play a round, take lessons, dine at the restaurants and plan a catered event. Junior golfers are also welcome. A variety of camps and programs for

children are offered, and the American Junior Golf Association holds the prestigious Thunderbird International Junior tournament on the Raptor Course each year.

Golf enthusiasts can enhance their experience at Grayhawk by purchasing White Tee or Black Tee programs that offer a variety of perks such as reduced green fees, priority access to tee times, invitations to special events, dining and merchandise discounts, access to the practice facility and much more.

To live a stone’s throw from a place that most people would consider a vacation destination is truly amazing. It’s just one of the many things that make Grayhawk so special. Get out there and enjoy!

Ever hear music in the air while strolling around the streets of Grayhawk? It’s probably not in your head. Could just be rehearsal

time for Don’t Tell Mom, a rock band made up of four local boys ranging in age from 9-12. Since most of the band’s rehearsing is done from a garage on Journey Lane, where band member Ethan Frink lives, many neighbors are already familiar with their sound. Not only does the band rehearse in Grayhawk, but they met here as well—a little over a year ago at Stages Music’s Rock Workshop. As part of the workshop program, the boys were put together as a group based on their similar ages and spent an intensive weekend receiving private instruction and learning the ins and outs of performing in a rock band. The workshop ended with they boys showing off all that they learned at a live concert performance. Their musical tastes and styles fit so well together that they decided to continue on as a group. The rest, as they say, is history. Since then, Don’t Tell Mom has played at Handle Bar J’s, Alice Cooperstown and, most recently, the Street Eats Food Truck Festival at Salt River Fields. While they usually stick to covering their favorite classic rock songs and current hits, the band has also professionally recorded

their original song “After School Blues”, which can be downloaded for free on their Facebook page. It’s a catchy tune and an impressive accomplishment for such young musicians.

The boys credit Stages Music with started them on the road to fulfill their rock and roll dreams. George Mahoney, the owner of Stages, also credits the boys’ parents and their tremendous support. Another key player in this story is Grayhawk Elementary School, where Ethan Frink is a member of band and chorus. Ethan’s Mom, Amy Frink, says that participating in chorus, led by Karen Dolezal (“Mrs. D”), has been great vocal training for Ethan.

Don’t Tell Mom is sure to be on the music scene for many years to come. It will be exciting to see how far these local boys can go!
