The surface is covered by a man-tle made up of an 825-mile-thick layer of ironandmagnesium-richrockknownasregolith.It’sbeen pounded by meteors, asteroids, and com-ets, which have created countless craters across its expanse.Thewidest craters are 140miles indiameterandareasdeepas15,000ft.Therearemountainsstandingashighas16,000ft.It’sesti-matedthatthemoonweighsabout81quintilliontons.

• Although themoon looks round tous, it’s real-lyegg-shaped.Aswe lookat it, the smallerendoftheeggispointedtowardus.Itappearstobeabout the same size as the sun, but it’s actually400timessmaller.Becausethemoonis400timescloser to Earth than the sun is, the two appearaboutthesamesize.ThemoonisactuallymovingawayfromEarthabout1.5inchesayear.

• Gravity on themoon is just 1/6 that of Earth.Thismeans if youweigh120 lbs. onEarth, youweighonly20lbs.onthemoon.Andifyoudon’tfeellikedieting,rememberthatbecauseofgravi-tationaleffects,youweighjustabitlesswhenthemoon is directly overhead.

•Theworldfirst saw close-upTVpictures of themoon’s surface in 1964 when images were sentbackbyRanger7,thefirstU.S.spaceprobe.

• InMay, 1961,President JohnF.Kennedy statedhisgoalinanaddresstoCongressof“landingamanonthemoonandreturninghimsafelytotheEarth”bytheendofthe1960s.Thefirstmannedspacecraft to the moon was Apollo 8 in 1968,whenFrankBorman,JamesLovell,andWilliamAnderscircledthemoon10timesbeforeheadingbacktoEarth.

•The Apollo 11 crewmade history in July, 1969when they made the first landing. On July 20,Neil Armstrong became the first human to setfootonthemoon.ThereareveryfewAmericansunfamiliar with his famous words, “That’s one

smallstepforman,onegiantleapformankind.”Armstrong later reported that what he actuallysaid was, “that’s one small step for a man…” The crewspent21hoursand36minutesonthesur-face, with 2 hours and 36 minutes outside the

craft, walking on the surface.The footprints ofthe Apollo 11 crew astronauts will remain forthousandsofyears,consideringthereisnowindor adverse weather to disturb them.

•TheApollo11crewcollectedlunarrocksweigh-ing842lbs.

•Atotalof12menhavewalkedonthemoon.Noone has done so since December, 1972 whenEugeneCernan of the finalmannedmission tothemoon,Apollo17,becamethelastmantosetfootonthelunarsurface.Apollo17wasthesixthlandingofhumansonthemoon.

• Doyouknowthedifferencebetweenwaxingandwaning?During thephasesof themoon’s cycle,when it appears to be getting larger, it’s calledwaxing,whilewaning iswhen it appears to getsmaller.

• If we didn’t have themoon, the oceans wouldhave no tides. Tides rise because of the pull of themoon’sgravity.ThisgravityisstrongestonthesideofEarthnearestthemoon,anditpullsupthewaterslightly,whichishightide.OnthesideofEarthfarthestfromthemoon,thegravityisatitsweakest, and the water moves a little away from the moon.

• What does it take the create an eclipse? Thesephenomenaoccuronlywhenthesun,Earth,andmoon are all in a straight line and one blocksthe lightfromanother.Theofficialtermforthisconfigurationof three celestialbodies is syzygy.A solar eclipse will occur during a newmoon,whenthemoonisbetweenthesunandEarthandblocksthesunlight.Alunareclipsewilloccuratthe timeofa fullmoon,whenEarth isbetweenthesunandthemoon,andblocksthesun’slightthatwouldnormallylightupthemoon.

•Accordingtofolklore,ifyouseetheslimcrescentmoon over your right shoulder, it’s consideredgoodluck,whileseeingitoveryourleftshoulderisunlucky.Legendfurtherstatesthatifyoumovetoanewhomeduringawaningmoon,youwillnevergohungry.

MostfolkshaveneverheardofVictoriaWoodhull,butshemadethepagesofhistorybooksasthefirstwomantorunfortheofficeofthePresidentoftheUnitedStates.Let’slearnmoreaboutVictoria’sseveralotherachieve-ments.

• Born intohumblebeginnings,Victoria’sparentsranatravelingmedicineshow,wherehermotherwasaspir-itualist and her father, the typical “snake oil salesman.” Victoria andher sisterTennieworked as clairvoyantsandfortunetellersintheshow.Atage14,Victoriacon-tracted a serious illness and her parents consulted a 28-year-old doctor, ChanningWoodhull, who wouldbecome Victoria’s husband just twomonths past her15thbirthday.

• ItsoonbecameapparentthatDr.Woodhullwasanal-coholic,morphineaddict,andawomanizer,andVicto-riawenttoworktokeepthemafloat.Aftertwochildren,includingonewhowasmentallydisabled,Victoriadi-vorced Woodhull 11 years later.

•VictoriaandTenniewereverysuccessfulasspiritualme-diumsandhealersandmadethemovetoNewYorkCitytocapitalizeonthissuccess.Victoriamarriedagain,thistimetoJamesBlood,aformerUnionArmycolonelin

theCivilWar,whohadalsobeenthefirstmayorofLaw-rence, Kansas. The sisters’ most famous client was rail-roadmillionaireCorneliusVanderbilt.Inappreciationfortheirservices,in1870VanderbilthelpedthemopentheirownstockbrokeragehouseonWallStreet,andthesistersbecamethefirstwomenstockbrokersinhistory.The companywas immediately successful, patronizedby wealthy widows and other women of means.

•Withtheproceedsfromthebrokerage,thewomenes-tablishedtheirownnewspaperWoodhullandClaflin’s

Weekly, a publication with 20,000 subscribers, whichfocusedonwomen’srightsandlaborreform.ThepaperwasthefirsttoprinttheEnglishversionofKarlMarx’sCommunistManifesto.

• In1872,nearly50yearsbeforewomenhadtherighttovote,VictoriabecamethefirstfemalecandidateforU.S.President, nominated by the Equal Rights Party.ThePartychose formerslaveandabolitionist leaderFred-erickDouglassasherrunningmate,althoughheneveracknowledged thenomination.Victoria’splatform in-cluded an eight-hour workday, a graduated incometax,socialwelfareprograms,andwomen’srights.Asadivorced woman, she advocated new divorce laws that gavewomen the right to leave unbearablemarriages.Inherwords,“IhaveaninalienableconstitutionalandnaturalrighttolovewhomImay,toloveaslongorasshortaperiodasIcan,tochangethatloveeverydayifIplease!”

• Just days before the Presidential election,Woodhull,her husband, and her sister were arrested on obscen-itychargesforrunninganexposéonpopularBrooklynpreacherHenryWardBeecher.Victoriaspentelectionday in jail, and al-though she was ac-quittedof all charges,her reputation was de-stroyed and her busi-nesses went bankrupt.

• Woodhull divorcedher second husband in 1876, and movedto England, whereshe married a wealthy banker, and published amagazine calledTheHumanitarian for nine years.Shelivedouttheremainder of her days in England, dying inLondonin1927.

Therearea largevarietyof spiders inAfricaandallofthemarequitescary.Oneweekendmywifehadacloseencounterwithoneofthoselargespiders–itwasatleastaslargeasasaucer.

Shewashomealonewithourtwotoddlerchildrenin our tiny house located about 11 miles into the bush fromLusaka,Zambia.ShewasmorethanaloneasIwas out of town and she had no vehicle, no telephone, noelectricityandshewasaboutaquarterofamilefromthenearestneighborwithnostreetlightsandnopaved roads.

In the late afternoon she noticed a large spiderdashingbetweentheraftersofourunfinishedcement-blockhousethathadaroofbutnoceiling.Asdaylightquicklyvanished,shetriedtoreachthespidertokillit, but it hid in the shadows between the rafters and the roof.

Aftersunsetshelitacandle,preparedourtwochil-dren for bed, and read them several bedtime stories untiltheynoddedofftosleep,whilebeingverymuchaware of her unwelcome guest hiding somewhereabove her.

Shetuckedthechildreninthenmovedcautiouslythroughtheshadowsofthehouseintoourbedroomtoprepareherselfforbed.Beforegoingtobedshetookone more peek into the children’s room and found them safe and fast asleep. Relieved, she returned to the bedroom and set down her candle on the small table at the side of the bed.

Beforeblowingout the candle she glancednerv-ously around the dimly lit room and breathed a silent prayerforthesoonarrivaloftwothings:courageand
