Chinese One of the finest collections outside of China, featuring bronzes and pottery from between the Ming Dynasty (1360-1640 AD) and as far back as the Neolithic period (4500-2000 BC).

British Folk ArtThe largest collection in the UK, made as everyday objects by everyday people, including weathervanes, shop signs, paintings of prize animals, agricultural tools and furniture.

Naples (1600-1800)A golden age of art from a thriving artistic community which developed and flourished as the tradition of the Grand Tour rapidly established Naples as a must-see destination on the itinerary of foreign visitors.

Northern European

Northern European (1450-1650)The Holy Roman Empire became a battleground for the Catholic and Protestant faiths for two centuries, and the paintings and sculptures in our collection by the likes of Lucas Cranach the Elder and Tilman Riemenschneider feature bold colours, exquisite detail, and decadent gilding.

British PortraitsFeaturing portraits of royal and noble sitters from the Tudor, Stuart and Georgian periods, including Henry VIII, Elizabeth I and Edward VI, from the first great era of British painting.

The ParkA wander along winding footpaths through wildflower meadows and woodland glades usually ends in a truly breath-taking view. The landscape designer, Lancelot ‘Capability’ Brown (1772), was known for his picture-perfect sightlines, framed by undulating lawns, serpentine lake, and colossal trees.

We’re also home to a variety of wildlife, from kingfishers and grebes, to bats and badgers. Our bird-hide is a fantastic place to while away an afternoon, and there are plenty of longer walks to be enjoyed which transform with the seasons.
