Phrases A phrase is a group of related words that does not include a subject and verb. (If the group of

related words does contain a subject and verb, it is considered a clause.) There are several different kinds of phrases.

NOUN PHRASE

A noun phrase comprises a noun (obviously) and any associated modifiers: • The long and winding road • A noun phrase

• any associated modifiers PREPOSITIONAL PHRASE A prepositional phrase consists of a preposition, a noun or pronoun that serves as the object of the preposition, and, more often than not, an adjective or two that modifies the object. Ernest Hemingway apparently fell in love with the rhythms of his prepositional phrases at the

beginning of his short story "Hills Like White Elephants":

The hills across the valley of the Ebro were long and white. On this side there

was no shade and no trees and the station was between two lines of rails in

the sun. Close against the side of the station there was the warm shadow of

the building and a curtain, made of strings of bamboo beads, hung across

the open door into the bar, to keep out flies. The American and the girl with

him sat at a table in the shade, outside the building. It was very hot and the

express from Barcelona would come in forty minutes. It stopped at this

junction for two minutes and went on to Madrid.

Page 6: guia final applied

AELS STUDY GUIDE FOR FINAL AND EXTRAORDINARY EXAMS 2012-2013 6

Prepositional phrases usually tell when or where: "in forty minutes," "in the sun, against the side, etc." Prepositional phrases can perform other functions, however: Except Jo, the children

were remarkably like their father. A prepositional phrase at the beginning of a sentence constitutes an introductory modifier, which is usually a signal for a comma. However, unless an introductory prepositional phrase is unusually long, we seldom need to follow it with a comma.

Instructions: Write ten sentences containing different prepositional phrases.

Clauses Definition

A clause is a group of related words containing a subject and a verb. A clause can be usefully

distinguished from a phrase, which is a group of related words that does not contain a subject-verb

relationship, such as "in the morning" or "running down the street" or "having grown used to this harassment."

Words We Use to Talk about Clauses

Clauses can be categorised into independent and dependent clauses. This simply means that some

clauses can stand by themselves, as separate sentences, and some can't.

Independent Clauses could stand by themselves as discrete sentences, except that when they do stand

by themselves, separated from other clauses, they're normally referred to simply as sentences, not clauses.

Page 7: guia final applied

AELS STUDY GUIDE FOR FINAL AND EXTRAORDINARY EXAMS 2012-2013 7

The ability to recognize a clause and to know when a clause is capable of acting as an independent unit is

essential to correct writing and is especially helpful in avoiding sentence fragments and run-on sentences.

Another term for dependent clause is subordinate clause: this means that the clause is subordinate to

another element (the independent clause) and depends on that other element for its meaning. The

subordinate clause is created by a subordinating conjunction or dependent word.

An independent clause, "She is older than her brother" (which could be its own sentence), can be

turned into a dependent or subordinate clause when the same group of words begins with a dependent word

(or a subordinating conjunction in this case): "Because she is older than her brother, she tells him what to do."

Also, as the clause cannot stand by itself, it is considered a fragment.

Instructions: Decide whether each of the following is a fragment or a complete sentence and write an F

or an S next to the group of words. End punctuation marks have been omitted on purpose.

1. I went to school 2. If I had thought of that before you did 3. Just when I thought I was over you

4. She would like to come tomorrow in the morning after breakfast 5. Today, as I was crossing the lake 6. Tomorrow will be a good day 7. After lunch and before six o’clock 8. No one can say that for sure 9. Go away

10. Robin’s friends are more than fond of him

Run-ons & comma splices A RUN-ON SENTENCE (sometimes called a "fused sentence") has at least two parts, either one of which

can stand by itself (in other words, two independent clauses), but the two parts have been smooshed together

instead of being properly connected. It is important to realize that the length of a sentence really has nothing

to do with whether a sentence is a run-on or not; being a run-on is a structural flaw that can plague even a very

short sentence: The sun is high, put on some sunblock.

When two independent clauses are connected by only a comma, they constitute a run-on sentence that is

called a comma-splice. The example just above (about the sunscreen) is a comma-splice. When you use a

comma to connect two independent clauses, it must be accompanied by a little conjunction (and, but, for, nor,

yet, or, so).

Run-on sentences happen typically under the following circumstances*:

a. When an independent clause gives an order or directive based on what was said in the prior

independent clause: This next chapter has a lot of difficult information in it, you should start studying

right away.

(We could put a period where that comma is and start a new sentence. A semicolon might also work

there.)

b. When two independent clauses are connected by a transitional expression (conjunctive

adverb) such as however, moreover, nevertheless. Mr. Nguyen has sent his four children to ivy-league

colleges, however, he has sacrificed his health working day and night in that dusty bakery.

(Again, where that first comma appears, we could have used either a period — and started a new

sentence — or a semicolon.)

c. When the second of two independent clauses contains a pronoun that connects it to the first

independent clause. This computer doesn't make sense to me, it came without a manual.

(Although these two clauses are quite brief, and the ideas are closely related, this is a run-on sentence.

We need a period where that comma now stands.)

Most of those computers in the Learning Assistance Center are broken already, this proves my point about

American computer manufacturers.

Page 8: guia final applied

AELS STUDY GUIDE FOR FINAL AND EXTRAORDINARY EXAMS 2012-2013 8

Again, two nicely related clauses, incorrectly connected — a run-on (comma splice). Use a period to cure

this sentence. http://grammar.ccc.commnet.edu/grammar/runons.htm

Instructions: Decide whether each of the sentences is a run-on or a comma splice, and write RO or CS next to each sentence. Then correct them by adding or deleting punctuation or words.

1. Two letters arrived on Monday and a third one came on Wednesday.

2. An encyclopaedia is a valuable source of information it contains summaries of every area of

knowledge.

3. Because of the rapid expansion of human knowledge, it is difficult to keep encyclopaedias current.

4. A printed encyclopaedia becomes out of date almost as soon as it is published also it is quite expensive to purchase.

5. Online encyclopaedias are available to everyone with access to the internet.

6. Articles in encyclopaedias are written by experts in each subject, who are often university professors.

Sentences A sentence is a group of words containing a subject and predicate. Sometimes, the subject is "understood," as in a command: "[You] go next door and get a cup of sugar." That probably means that the shortest possible complete sentence is something like "Go!" A sentence ought to express a thought that can stand by itself

Sentences by function

Sentences can be defined according to function: declarative (most of the sentences we use), interrogative (which ask a question — "What's your name?"), exclamatory ("There's a fire in the kitchen!"), and imperative ("Don't drink that!")

Instructions: In the space next to the question number, write a T if it is a declarative sentence, A if it is

an interrogative sentence, C if it is an imperative sentence, and R if it is an exclamatory sentence. If your answers are correct, the letters will spell out a three-word response to the question “What will a

mouse do?” End punctuations have been purposely omitted.

1. _____ Will Jonah go to the movies with us

2. _____ The show is about to begin

3. _____ Most of the actors in that movie are famous people

4. _____ I am absolutely appalled by that behaviour

5. _____ Am I the only one in the group who knows where you live

6. _____ Call me if you think you will be able to go with us

7. _____ Rico an Marilyn will go in your car

8. _____ Aren’t they driving you there, Mitch

9. _____ Please check to see what time the movie ends

10. _____ Did you not ask them to go with us

11. _____ This is going to be a fun night

What will a mouse do? _______________________________________________________________________

Now write three example sentences for each of these four types of sentences.

Sentences by how they are formed.

We can categorize sentences into four main types, depending on the number and type of clauses they contain: Simple (one independent clause): We drove from Connecticut to Tennessee in one day. Compound (more than one independent clause): We were exhausted, but we arrived in time for my

father's birthday party.

Complex (one independent clause and at least one dependent clause): Although he is now 79 years

old, he still claims to be 65. Compound-complex (more than one independent clause and at least one dependent clause): After

it was all over, my dad claimed he knew we were planning something, but we think he was really

surprised.

Instructions: Join the following sentences into the type in parenthesis. Add or delete words and

punctuation marks as needed.

1. My mother is a woman. My mother is very intelligent. She studied very hard. (Join the sentences

into ONE complex-compound)

______________________________________________________________________________________ 2. I went to the movies to see a movie. The movie was boring. (join the sentences into a

compound one)

______________________________________________________________________________________

_________________________________________________________________________________________

5. Mr Bergen’s class is interesting. Ms Jones class is not interesting. (Join the sentences ito a

compound one)

_________________________________________________________________________________________

Instructions: Write three examples of each of the four types of sentences.

Finally, sentences can also be categorised according to their role in a paragraph:

Topic Sentence

A topic sentence is a sentence whose main idea or claim controls the rest of the paragraph;

the body of a paragraph explains, develops or supports with evidence the topic sentence's main idea or claim. The topic sentence is usually the first sentence of a paragraph, but not necessarily. It may come, for example, after a transition sentence; it may even come at the end of a paragraph.

Page 10: guia final applied

AELS STUDY GUIDE FOR FINAL AND EXTRAORDINARY EXAMS 2012-2013 10

Instructions: Select the topic sentence in each set below, and mark it in any fashion (underline, circle,

highlight, cross out) 1. I had to take a cold shower.

The hot water did not work well. First, my alarm clock did not go off. Today was not the best day of my life. I had to have cold milk for breakfast.

My bus left me. I had a test at school, and failed. Would you say this was one of the best days?

2. By bus you cannot stop and see all the churches or monuments. Traffic is really heavy, and there are very few parking spaces, so it is difficult to go by car.

Mexico City downtown can be enjoyed better when walking. When you walk, you can stop to look at anything for as long as you please. When walking, you can discover places that no tourist-guide tells you about.

3. First, you need to prepare the fruit with sugar and spices. To prepare the crust it is important that the water is cold.

Baking at the right temperature will result in a crispy crust and firm apples. Usually, apple pie is best if you eat it with ice-cream. Preparing a great apple pie is easily done in few steps.

Supporting Sentences

The second part of a paragraph is the body of the paragraph, the supporting sentences. The

sentences in the body of the paragraph provide details to support the topic. Instructions: In the following, the topic sentence is the first sentence. Tick the sentence that does not support the topic sentence.

1. Being a supermodel may not be as easy as it seems. Travelling constantly is a must, but one does not really get to know the places. All the clothes one wears in the shows are borrowed. One has to be in a constant diet.

One gets a lot of money in a short time. The lights, makeup, and long hours are terrible for one's skin.

2. Mosquitoes are interesting insects. Their buzzing can be really annoying. They live for a little time.

It is known that only the female bites. The blood they suck is necessary for their reproduction. They undergo metamorphosis.

3. Human activities increase air pollution. Every time we plug in an electrical device, it generates CO2.

Volcanic eruptions expel a lot of contaminants to the atmosphere. All the industries produce wastes that can be in gaseous form. Traffic in cities increases the greenhouse gases. Bad quality gasolines are responsible for most of the sulphur and lead in the air we breathe.

4. People's health would be better if they used their cars less.

Walking is an excellent exercise for the heart. Air pollution would decrease, so would respiratory diseases. People would buy shoes more frequently. Traffic would be less, so stress would be reduced.

Page 11: guia final applied

Instructions: Tick the sentence that would best conclude the paragraph because it relates to the topic sentence.

1. Smileys: , , or have improved communication through instant messages because

of what they represent.
