What are Clean Agents?

Electrically non-conducting, volatile, or gaseous fire extinguishant that does not leave aresidue upon evaporation

(NFPA 2001, Sec. 3.3.6)

* Does not conduct electricity

* Gaseous

* Does not leave a residue behind

* Is not carbon dioxide

Designed to Provide a Large Margin of Human Safety

Clean agents fire suppression applications often include the presence of people, sosafety to human life is a critical issue when selecting a fire suppression product. 3M™Novec™ 1230 Fire Protection Fluid is a highly efficient fire extinguishant that's safe foruse in occupied spaces. The large margin between Novec 1230 fluid's useconcentration and "Non Observed Adverse Effects Level" provides the largest marginof safety relative to other chemical clean agents, CO2, and inert gas mixtures.

Novec 1230 Fluid Performance

Don’t Just Manage a Fire. Extinguish It.3M™ Novec™ 1230 Fire Protection Fluid is a highly-effective clean agent firesuppressant, designed to extinguish a fire in its incipient stage before it has a chance tospread. It is applied as a gas, but is liquid at room temperature, and can be effectivelyused in streaming, flooding systems, or for use in inerting and explosion suppressionapplications. 20

Novec 1230 Fluid Performance

Knocks down fires fast

Novec 1230 Fluid has a very low heat of vaporization, approximately 25 times less thanthat of water. This, along with a higher vapor pressure, causes Novec 1230 Fluid toevaporate more than 50 times faster than water. It also allows the clean agent totransition from a liquid to a gaseous state very rapidly when discharged through anozzle, and readily achieve vapor extinguishing concentrations in air. With highextinguishing efficiency and a wide margin of safety, Novec 1230 fluid is a greatalternative to water sprinkler systems, foam and dry chemicals due to:

* Low toxicity (no harm to personnel)

* Extinguishes fires in less than half the time of CO2 & inert gases

* No damage to sensitive equipment

* Not targeted for emission reduction or phaseout 21

Sustainability :From its inception, 3M™ Novec™ 1230 Fire Protection Fluidwas designed to address the global demand for a sustainableclean agent. It is effective at extinguishing fires andis not targeted for emission reduction, phase-out orphase-down. Novec 1230 fluid offers the sustainable cleanagent properties you need, such as:* Zero ozone depletion potential (ODP)* An atmospheric lifetime of 5 days, compared to 65 years for halons* A global warming potential (GWP) of less than 1 – about the same as naturally-

occurring carbon dioxide 22

500 Series Novec 1230 Clean Agent Cylinders offer Enhanced Design Capabilitycompared with 360 psig (25 bars) cylinders :

* Less required Clean Agent

An additional Clean Agent required when the pressure and flow rate of agent in the pipeand nozzles has been met the limitation of Pipe Size and Flow Rate

* Smaller Size and Lower Quantity of Cylinders

Increasing Size and Quantity of Cylinders is required to get more pressure as thesmaller size and lower quantity of cylinders can not meet the requirement of listedsystem such as Discharge Time, Design Concentration, Flow Rate and Pressure at thedistribution pipe and nozzles

* Longer Pipe Length and Larger Pipe Network

* Smaller Pipe Diameters26

System Components : Multi Zones Application

Multiple hazards can often be protected with a common set of cylinders by usingselector valves. Selector valves components are required in these specific cylinderarrangements that utilize selector valves to allow the protection of multiple hazards orhazard zones by one set of clean agent cylinder.

These components consist of the discharge nozzles used to atomize the liquid Novec1230 fluid and introduce it into a protected hazard along with the associated pipingsystem.

* Discharge Nozzle Ports : 4, 6, or 8 port (90°, 180°, 360°)

* Maximum nozzle height for a protected space is 18 ft 4 in (5.59 m) per tier of nozzles.

* Additional tiers are required for nozzle heights greater than 18 ft 4 in.

* Nozzles must be mounted within 4 ft 5 in (1.35 m) of the ceiling

System Component : Control Panel

* For systems requiring UL listing, the control panel must be UL listed and compatible

with the electrical valve actuator as indicated in the control panel manual.

* For systems requiring FM approval, the control panel must be FM approved and

compatible with the electric valve actuator as indicated in the control panel manual.

* The control panel should be located in an accessible area and installed in compliance

with NFPA 72 (National Fire Alarm Code).

System Component : Detection and Alarm Devices

* Detector selection is dependent upon hazard occupancy and environmental

conditions.

* Systems are designed to extinguish a fire rapidly in its incipient stage. The use of

smoke detectors of appropriate type must be considered to provide the earliest

possible indication of a fire detection with a low susceptibility to false alarms.

* For systems requiring UL listing, detectors must be UL listed and compatible with the

control panel as indicated in the control panel manual.

* Air sampling detection systems can also be utilized.

* In most applications, the detection devices are installed in a cross-zone (double

knock) or voting configuration. Cross-zoning of early warning detectors affords

stability yet provides early detection. 45

System Component : Detection and Alarm Devices

* Audible and visual devices may be utilized to indicate alarm conditions, system

status, or trouble conditions within the system.

* Audible alarm devices must be of a sufficient decibel level to be heard over the

maximum noise level in the protected hazard.
