Last month, the Rag received an emailrom a resident in Waianakarua asking

us to nd out more about a new bridgeproposed or Breakneck Road. A

letter sent rom the council in Aprilwas attached. he letter said that thehistoric wooden bridge built in 1926 onBreakneck Road over the WaianakaruaRiver is beyond practicable repair andwill soon be replaced by a new one. Tereader wondered i the new bridge wouldhave a pedestrian lane. It is one o the

popular swimmingholes during thesummer among theschool kids.

he Rag sent ateam to have a look at the bridge as wellas asking questions

o the council. Wediscovered thatconsent was givenby the His tor icPlaces rust (HP ) in November 2009

or the 84 year old bridge to be replaced.( echnically, the council did not need toseek a consent rom the HP because the

bridge is not old enough to be o historic value, but the council decided to ask orconsent anyway.) Te last time the bridge

was repaired was in 1980 when steelsupports were added and the deckingreplaced.

    he single lane wooden bridge

overlooks a signi icant heri tageconstruction, Graves Dam. he damwas constructed in c.1870 to harness thepower o the river to run a water wheel orthe Millhouse. Te water wheel has longgone, the Millhouse is now a hotel andthe dam wall has been altered to let thewater ow through. We wandered around

the bridge and thedam. All we couldhear was the soundo the river until ahuge logging truck

rom the nearby plantation orestcame down the

road with its engineroaring. It dwar edthe bridge.

Te new bridgewill be 4.75 metres wide, about 1.5metres wider than the existing bridge, according to Geo Young rom WaitakiDistrict Council, who is responsible or

the project. It will be a single lane likethe existing bridge, but will be madeo concrete with a at deck. Te design

Te last ew months o li e aboard CarpeDiem, our English narrowboat, have

swirled away down the canal and wehave had to say our sad goodbyes untilthe next trip. She is sa ely moored at herberth in the small marina at Hoo Mill inthe Midlands, being well looked a er by

riends while we attend to the neglectedgarden and our real li e in Hampden.

Our last big trip, in March and April,

was down the Grand Union canal pastBirmingham, Coventry and MiltonKeynes to the big smoke o London. Oncethe wide canal was a rantic highway o huge economic importance to theindustrialists o 18th century England, loud with jostling boatmen; now it is asecret, almost orgotten, green corridor

which passes through huge towns as i ina parallel universe. Instead o the madnesso the motorway there are old parks andgreen woods, disused gravel pits ull o wildli e, derelict mills, black and whitelocks and humpbacked bridges. I keptlooking or signs o the approachingmega city, but we cruised right into

the heart o London cocooned in thisunreal world. A er two weeks o daily travel we tied up inLittle Venice, near theentrance to Paddingtonstation. Tis is a terri cmooring you can stay

or three weeks ree o charge and pop outdaily to see the sights.

Coming home each night to our own bedand cosy wood-burning re was quitesurreal in the middle o London, butextremely pleasant.

Te next part o the trip was perhapsthe most exciting so ar onto themighty Tames itsel rom Brent ord upto Ox ord. Te rst part is tidal, and wehad prepared conscientiously with tidetables, li e-jackets and riendly chats tothe river master. It can be a bit tricky at times but we had a day o gloriousspring weather and shared the river withboats large and small, all mucking aboutand enjoying themselves. Te hardestpart was avoiding all the rowers. It was

antastic to arrive at Hampton CourtPalace by boat and moor up in the samespot as Henry the Eighth and Anne wouldhave done in the 16th century. Again, westayed the night right outside the palace, gratis. Some other places along the riverdid charge, though, as most o the bank is private land. he rent at Eton wascollected by a very gentlemanly bursaras the sun went down one night.

Te river was beauti ul in the early spring, with lots o owers out in thegardens o the rich and

amous and king shers, coots, swans, grebesand moor hens busily nes t ing . I th ink Ieven saw an otter one

You would really have to wonder why it is that the Australians make betterwoodburning multi purpose ovens thanthe New Zealanders do. Multi purposebeing the ability to achieve as many

unctions as possible rom a single energy source.

We had a small 50 square metrerelocatable house which was to be usedas a temporary home on a rural siteuntil we had time to build somethingmore suitable. Te house and site hadno electricity, so the burner had to havemany unctions, be able to heat our water, have a cook top sur ace, have an oven andbe able to heat the house all e ectively

rom the one piece o wood, be o solidsteel or cast iron construction and at areasonable price.

We had already decided it had tobe carbon neutralso wood was theobvious choice and itwas possible to growyour own givinga degree o energy independence.

y p i c a l l y European homeshave been usingburners such as theAga achieving theserequirements oryears, however they were o en ueled by

coal or diesel. And while these burnersare the top o the range they were way outside the price we wished to spend andare very large units, more use ul to heatlarge amily homes.

So a ter much looking around atavailable burners we ound the NectreBakers Oven at a cost o $2000 in 2007.

hey are now about $4000 includingwetback but without the ue kit whichyou can get through a plumber.

We installed it on a raised tile hearthover a timber oor and had a plumber

t the water connections to a hot watercylinder that was also dual purpose as ithad solar thermal heating connections.

Practical experience and three yearso use have shown the ollowing pointso interest. It will easily heat a space o up

to 100 sq. metres ormore in a straw balehouse. It will keepyou in hot water. Youcan do all o yourcooking, its great orslow ood, and youcan dry your clothesor ood on rackspositioned above.Best o all theres nopower bill, althoughit uses about 12 cubicmetres o wood peryear.

Because we wereusing it as our solesource o energy it

but you could count on the ngers o onehand the boats actually moving each day, soapart rom the rowers we mostly had the riverto ourselves, hard though that is to believe.

Once past Ox ord we were o theriver and onto the Ox ord canal, whichmeanders through typically pretty English countryside and cute villagesuntil it meets up with the Grand Unionagain near Coventry, and we were nearing

home - another two weeks o travel.Once we were back we took CarpeDiem up to Stone, a small town aboutseven miles rom our mooring, which inthe early days o canal building was a hiveo activity. It still has the original 250-yearold dry docks in daily use, and here westayed or a week, scraping and blacking

the hull and painting the sides and ronta shiny dark blue. When she was back in the water we hardly recognised ourpreviously battered and travel wornhome; she looked like a new boat. Wecruised back to Hoo Mill using all ourskill to avoid scratches!

So now she will sit, through the

rest o the hot summer, then autumnand winter until we return or anothermeander along the quiet water roadso Britain. We owe a great debt to thoseoriginal navigators or navvies, who builtthe canals and the later enthusiasts whosaved them rom dereliction when otherswould have lled them in, thinking them

outmoded and useless. Fortunately mostcanals are still there today, providing theper ect way to explore a unique part o Englands history.

    Some residents have expressed anxiety

about the changes and they have notbeen in ormed about the nature o thedelay. Teir anxiety is partly because they have to use alternative roads during theconstruction period, which the WDCexpects to take 16 weeks.

Te April letter o ered the residentsthe use o a temporary bridge and an

alternative route via Reid Road andthe Road Metals Ltd gravel pit. I thatshould be ooded they would be directedto the highway via Middle Ridge andMount Misery Roads. Some residentswe spoke to are concerned about thecondition o the roads, especially whenwet. Tose roads may not look drivablenow, but residents are assured that, by the time construction begins they willbe sufciently trafcable. Geo Youngwants to reassure residents who may ndopening and closing gates on the orestry roads difcult that they will not need todeal with any closed gates.

I you have any urther questions, pleaseorward them to the Council or the Rag. I

there are any public issues you would like us toinvestigate, do not hesitate to contact the Rag.

    tHe Rag in tRansition

It has been twelve months since the Ragwent through a signi cant makeover. Asyou may have noticed we have introduceda resh look, more pro essional editingand production process and at the sametime relaunched our online edition. Tesee orts were undertaken as a result o abusiness analysis we did on the Rag.

he Rag has been almost singlehandedly produced by Graeme Youngmansince he took it over rom the oundingpublisher Sue Sheet during Christmas2006. It has been taxing work or Graemeand has also cost him a considerableamount o money.

When the current team becameinvolved we decided it would be best tophase out the printed edition. We couldnot a ord to continue publishing it inits current ormat. We needed to boostadvertising revenue and ind otherrevenue sources to pay or the printing(which is the biggest cost) in the shortterm while we encouraged readers toshi to the online version. We tentatively agreed to aim at publishing online only and to phase out the printed editionwithin three years.

welve months on, even though theprinted Rag is attracting some moreadvertisers (thank you), the revenue isnowhere near enough to cover expenses.

We have discussed various und raising ventures, but none so ar would bring inenough to cover the ongoing costs.

he online edition is meanwhilesteadily increasing its readership sincebeing launched July last year. Eventhough it does not look very ash, wedecided to use the blog plat orm or theease o updating. We have had more than1000 visits with 3000 page views sincethe visit count metre was installed inNovember.

We are entering the second year o transition. I the Rags nances do notimprove, we will have to stop producingthe print version sooner than weanticipated and publish solely online. Orwe might have to introduce a subscription

or those who still want a print edition. We will keep the community in ormedabout what is happening to the Rag. Weassure you that in whatever orm it takes, the Rag will remain your local media.

In the meantime, we will happily acceptadvertising, donations, contributions andsupport. For those who have not had achance to read the Rag online, please havea look and amiliarise yourselves with it.For those who do not have an internetconnection, drop in at the Hampdenlibrary and use the computer there.

More immediately, the submissiondeadline or the September printed issueis August 15, as Graeme and Carolyn aregoing on a well deserved holiday later inthe month. We would like to deliver theedition around August 25. Tere is nodeadline or the online edition, so writeto us anytime.
